and whiteout conditions. more than two feet of snow and counting in parts of central new york. >> i went to bed, i woke up, it was a winter wonderland. >> reporter: slick roads and frigid temperatures in ohio. blamed for this 40-car pileup and this fire in new jersey. downed powerlines sparking a fire that engulfed two cars in michigan. that punishing winter weather. >> whoo, we got a whiteout! look at this. >> pushing across the northeast. >> got about four inches of snow. still coming down. >> reporter: turning roads in new york into icy parking lots. traffic and us struggling to keep moving. we're on interstate 81. we're in the lighter part of the snow band. a long line of cars. still going about 5 on the highway. the hardest hit areas could get

another 6 to 12 inches. you guys, these roads are ridiculously bad. we were trying to get here last night. it felt like when i was studying in indiana. strong lake-effect bands. wind advisories down to virginia. you can see where the heart of the lake-effect snow and winter storm warnings are there. how much more on top of the 10 to 30 inch on the ground? another 6 to 12. not just reserved for out the the northeast. already feeling this morning in tallahassee, sub freezing. yes, it feels like a winter blast not just there but a lot of places, george? i'm getting blasted here. 20 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts. >> i can tell. the big question, holiday travel. what will it mean? >> the sol day travel. the forecast. that one storm digging in from the southwest moves in. from dallas up to the midwest, minnesota, parts of iowa. severe storms along the cold

and cokie roberts. the president-elect leaned in to general james mattis, mad dog mattis as a possible secretary of defense. what can you tell us? >> they share a lot of the same views about the military and foreign policy. since retiring in 2013, mattis has been critical of defense cuts, of announcing draw-downs in afghanistan in advance, and our approach to fighting rad a call jihadists. saying we have not been clear about defining or dealing with terrorists. he's beloved by troops. the kind of general who would take christmas duty watch so younger marines with families could enjoy holidays. women in the military may have issues with where he stands on women in combat. he would have to get a kongs nal waiver because you have to be out of uniform for seven years to serve as defense secretary. >> someone else who might need a

waiver. general david petraeus. also mitt romney, rudy giuliani. all mentioned for secretary of state. >> we don't know a lot about what happened with mitt romney. as for david petraeus, i'm not sure he's under active consideration but there was another general who recommended that trump look at him. but all very different views on things. >> meantime, cokie, president-elect face more questions about his business and possible conflicts after the meeting with indian developers that have real estate interests with donald trump. president obama talk about that yesterday in peru. >> and from ethics officers of republican as well as democratic administrations saying he's got to do something. about these business interests. president obama said he put all of hi holdings in treasury ponds and basically said to his staff if it sounds like fun, don't do

it. but -- and pointed out that there have not been any scandals in his administration so far. donald trump's going to have a real problem here. he criticized hillary clinton for her foundation getting contributions from foreign companies. the foundation was doing good around the world. in this case, it would be a question of somebody trying to do business to try to get some sort of special favors from the government. that could be very, very dicey. >> okay, cokie roberts, martha raddatz, thank you very much. cokie, you'll be back. breaking news overseas. authorities arresting at least seven people in a terror raid, concerned they were plotting an take in france. pierre thomas is here in the studio with us. what do you know? >> reporter: robin, again, seven to eight people, afghan, french, and of moroccan descent. the concern was they were

perhaps going to target a christmas celebration. a christmas market. something that could play out similar to what we with saw last year in paris. >> yes, indeed. with the holiday season coming. americans travel abroad. any threats is this concerns? >> a worldwide travel alert for americans in europe. here at home, no specific credible threat. last week, officials did take note of yis kis talking about attacks in the holiday season. here at home, a serioes of violent attack here at home. four officers targeted. in san antonio, an officer was executed in a traffic stop. police are searching for this car. >> reporter: overnight, a manhunt intensifying. san antonio police serarching fr a suspect they say killed detective benjamin marconi, a 20-year vet ran of the force sitting in his patrol vehicle just outside of headquarters.

this car pulled up behind him. man getting out and shooting detechive marconi twice in the head through the passenger side window. >> i've got an officer down in front of headquarters. >> reporter: the 50-year-old father of two rushed to the hospital where he passed away. >> most families would will celebrating the holidays. s.a.p.d. will be burying one of its own because of an ultimate act of cowardice by a suspect who will be caught and brought to justice. >> reporter: police officers released photos of people they want to talk to. another officer shot in the face while he was wearing his seat belt. >> the officer says he saw the muzzle flashes and felt the glass breaking as the shots came through and struck him in the head. >> reporter: the unidentified married father of three in critical but stable condition after a city-wide manhunt, the police and the suspect exchanging gunfire.

the alleged shooter killed by authority. >> this shows the dangers of policing in st. louis and around the country. >> reporter: over the weekend, two more shootings, in florida and missouri. two police officers shot during traffic stops. both recovering. and here in snow an antonio, th manhunt continues. all police officers will perform traffic stops in pairs until this situation is resolved. now to amy with today's other top stories. a protest that turned into a rye wrot? >> a tense standoff turned violent overnight near the site of the north dakota pipeline project. about 400 protesters tried to push their way on to a bridge, lighting about a dozen fire there is and using slingshots the fire rox at police. the officers fired back with water cannons in the treezing temperatures. they used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. one ster was injured. one protester has been arrested. new claims this morning that chemical weapons are being used

to attack civilians in syria. the latest reported victims include family in aleppo. meanwhile, surveillance video showing an air strike hitting a children's hospital. all hospitals in eastern aleppo are now destroyed. leaving 250,000 residents to suffer. some frighten moments for passengers in europe. heavy winds rocked the the plane while it approached amsterdam's airport. they aborted the landing at the last minute you before trying again. something amiss in the nfl after an embarrassing record on sunday. kickers missed 12 extra points. these kicks after touchdowns used to be automatic until last year when the league made them 13 yards longer. finally, football may be a religion for some fans. that concept taken to a whole new level. a church in dallas agreed to put the cowboys game on the projection screen behind the pulpit during service on sunday.

human being, is just heinous. >> reporter: overnight, one of the suspects, james rackover, the surrogate son of a prominent manhattan jeweler, denying any involvement in the murder. saying i have though reason to hurt this kid. i have never hurt anyone. i have never killed anyone. i didn't do this. but police disagree. they believe comunale went to this luxury high-rise with 25-year-old rackover, 28-year-old larry dilione, and three women after meeting them at a nightclub. comunal rks left the high-rise to help the three women into a cab. he wept back in the building and was murdered. >> he was stabbed 15 times in the chest area. there was an effort to burn his body. a disturbing crime scene. >> reporter: police believe the victim's body was removed from the apartment on this blood-stained luggage cart.

we welcome you back. time for our big board. we're breaking down more of this morning's top stories. dan abrams is here at the story with us. we're going to start with the duchess of york, sarah ferguson, seeking $30 million in damages. the lawsuit revolving around a 2010 sting operation by an undercover reporter. dan, many people remember this.

celebrities in england. >> how strong of a case is it? rupert murdoch's lawyers say it's defective and embartsdsing. >> she said it on tape. in england, they're willing more to evaluate the quality of the journalist. part of the lawsuit talks about the way it was edit t. it was misleading. things you would never see in a lawsuit here. >> we have seen lawsuits here against the media have been succeeding. >> they have. they have. this one wouldn't in the united states. >> dan, thank you very much. up next, new warnings about air rage. as the holiday travel season kicks into high gear. 41 passengers, excuse me, removed from a brussels flight over the weekend. are these incidents on the rise? or are we just seeing more thanks to smartphones?

>> you know, george stephanopoulos. you're a smart man. i have the statistics to say that. there are fewer incidents than there used to be. i have never heard anything like this. 41 people taken off an aircraft at the same time. all from the same group. and it's rare.ne or two people. i have the numbers. over the last five years in the united states, we had 183 ins dentss down to 150, down to 145, down to 103. this year, halfway through the year, only 31 incidents. yes, there are fewer. we hear a lot more about them, george. >> and david, i know this is shocking. but alcohol may have played a role. i'm no expert here. but that is what they're saying. people are saying, should alcohol be banned on flights. >> there's always talk about that. yes, alcohol was involved with some of the 41 taken off board. this is the big issue. airlines, it's a revenue stream

for them. they also don't want an unsafe situation inside the cockpit. it's been tried before. fight attendants try to limit people. haven't you had enough. sometimes that's led to unruly passengers. it can be a bad mix. >> good luck on the ban. >> good luck can that. sometimes flying leads you to drinking. i like your travel outfit. very chic. good look, good look. >> thank you. i'm getting on plane now. an alarming new study about kids and junk food. children exposed to food advertisements consumed more calories even when they were not hungry. what are the indications, jen? >> here's the thing. this study found an association with what preschool kids do, watching tv with food ads and then what they consume. in this case, highly palatable foods, code knew trish speak for

high-calorie, high-sugar, low-nutrient. this is about increased cued eating. and can what kids see prime the pump for baf yors later on that lead to weight gain. it's impossible to avoid these ads. this is very concerning. >> so what should parents do? >> well, look. first, as a mom, i remember these days. you are if control of what your preschool child watches or doesn't watch. you want to lempbl that while row still can. cow can't control a 15-year-old as easily. then, as a doctor, i think this study brings up again that mind-body connection. we know there's a part of the brain that gets really lit you will when we eat high-sugar foods. that pathway can be established very early in life. remember that connection. lastly, as a nutritionist. i learned. this bears repeating. put the living color on your plate. don't watch it on the screen. the more color your children eat, the better their diet is.
