a sad day for the department of corrections in delaware. one of their own is dead and now investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a nearly day long standoff with inmates. chopper 6 hd was high above the prison when the standoff was coming to an end just before daylight. they were led into the prison one by one. and now the task of gathering the evidence givens as officialed try to pinpoint who is responsible. >> "action news" reporter gray hall joins us live in delaware where state officials have given an update on how the standoff started and ended. >> reporter: as you know the last 20 hours or so have been dangerous and intense here in delaware. let take you to the video we shot moments ago of those prisoners being escorted out as this came to an end after 5:00

this morning. you see the inmates there on the ground and this came to an end at 5:06 this morning and it took place at the building c. the inmates were using metal foot lockers filled with water to block the doors and was turned back on as a demand from inmates and officers said they used a backhoe to gain entrance and authorities described why they breached the building when they did. >> we knew we had one hostage we believe was still alive because there was communication to verify that. and sergeant lloyd we had no can't with and up updates on and we were concerned. we made a commitment to enter. >> as they searched the building they found one of the two hostages inside and the female correction office was not hurt

and treated and released from the hospital and the tactical team found the last hostage, also a d.o.c. employee identified as sergeant steven floyd, he was unresponsive and pronounced dead at 5:29 this morning. they say they are saddened by all of this but this investigation will continue and they will leave no stone unturned. >> while today we mourn and tomorrow and for a long time going forward we also have to investigate what happened here. determine the facts. to make sure that it never happens again. >> all right so back out live this investigation already underway. you see the flags are being flown at half staff across the state of delaware. we can tell that you sergeant floyd leaves behind a wife and three children and also a

grandfather. as we mentioned this investigation continues as we learn more information we'll bring it to you. gray hall, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. right now state police and homeland security officials are combing through every inch of the c building. >> right now what we are going through is progressing the crime scene, which is that entire building. that is d.o.c. and delaware state detectives going cell by cell collecting evidence. >> the c building where the hostage situation unfolded houses 120 inmates and officials confirm the inmates at least some of them were armed with sharp objects but we don't know the type of weapons they were using. at this point we don't know how sergeant steven floyd died. he was with the department for 16 years. our coverage of the delaware prison investigation continues

bundle up if you head out. david murphy always bundles up. >> i don't like the cold i am always dressed appropriately. we have a fair amount of sunshine mixing with the clouds and take a look at satellite clouds thicker down south by the shore and also some cloud cover in and out of play up north where we have a couple of passing rain and snow showers, and again some of these snow showers pushing into reading and we see this change over to rain in bucks county and montgomery county and points north there are a couple of snow showers around and be careful in those. 44 degrees currently in philadelphia and cool and you see the breeze coming in from the west most of us along the east coast are looking at breezes getting up into the teens and that is what we got in philadelphia and buffalo and pittsburgh as well. some wind gusts have gone up to the mid-20s and we expect that

trying to protect theirs. >> it was his mission. to change people's perception about the ocean and how we should look after it. >> abc news new york. dozens of protesters are arrested in north dakota over the controversial access pipeline project. 76 people were arrested yesterday after they refused to leave a camp setup on fry at land. they gave the protesters repeated warnings to leave and there were 700 arrests since last august and last night's arrest came after a new spot to protest after their main spot was closed down. police in west palm beach, florida, is looking for a support that fought with an officer and got away. police say this began when the officer tried to pull the man over for a traffic violation and the suspect jumped out of the car and tried to make a run for

it. and then he caught up with the suspect and he lost his shirt and shoes and the man got away and remains on the loose. >> well, there is not a whole lot more -- deputies in this kentucky courtroom had to forcibly remove two women from the room there. it started when the judge called keesha johnson to the bench and she refused and another woman started to record that on her phone and she was removed and then on top of her original charges of drug possession, johnson and the other woman face contempt of court charges. a deputy in arkansas is in trouble after allowing an inmate to drive his car because he was too toxcated to drive. >> are you a police officer? >> yes, sir. >> for what department. what department do you want me to be. >> that is chance doddson

is still indicating snow here in reading. be careful up there because a quick hitting snow shower could be enough to get slick spots on the roadways and if you are not behaving properly, the farther east it goes the tendency to turn to rain. in any event it's lake-effect stuff east of pennsylvania and lets take a look outside. we have sky 6 hd and there is the sunshine over the ben franklin bridge mixing with some puffy cumulous cloud cover and a pretty day and also chilly. you'll want to bundle up. temperatures 44 currently within the wind currently west northwest and gusting into the 20s at times and feels like the mid up toer 30s and winter cuts are a good idea this afternoon. and you see the lake-effect snow coming in of the great lakes and a good portion of it in central

pennsylvania. and then hopefully the snow showers start to ease back a bit. 40 in reading and 45 in wilmington and 44 in philadelphia and 45 in millville and mid-40s down the shore. as we roll through the nextself hours, 44 by 2:00 if we hit the 45 it will be about 3:00. and then down to 43 by 5:00 and continuing to fall from there. by 10:00 tonight we are below freezing and tomorrow morning when you wake up. probably in the mid-20s in philadelphia. some suburbs in the low 20s and tomorrow afternoon stays cold, a high of 36 degrees with the cold air coming in from the west. and the breezes will still be a tack ter and tomorrow i expect windchills make it feel like the 20s all day long. that will be a cool one and here are the windchills, tonight it doesn't look bad. 6:00 you'll still be in the 30s windchill wise. but overnight into tomorrow morning, down into the 20s and teens and tomorrow afternoon again you don't improve all that much. bundle up today and especially

the "action news" cam is live in wilmington, delaware on the 200 block of adams, we expect the body is of sergeant steven floyd to be escorted here at any point now. we know he is still at the prison located in smyrna, delaware and he will be transported here to the medical examiners office where an auto topsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. sergeant steven floyd a 16 year veteran with the delaware department of corrections was found unresponsive as the police got into the prison where a standoff was under way for 20 hours and a number of his colleagues were rescued and she

is okay and being checked out at a hospital and this was the tragic result of this standoff, this hours long standoff at the prison. the largest prison in the state of delaware that went on through the overnight hours, all the police officers lined up here now as sergeant steven floyd's body expected to arrive in wilmington at the medical examiners office. we'll have the latest at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. now meteorologist david murphy. >> stormtracker 6 live double scan picked up that change from snow so rain with the showers off in the north and western suburbs, so the temperatures are getting warm enough now we see rain and less snow up north. just small sprinkles and showers and clouds and sun and breezy otherwise, more sun the closer you get to i-95. a bunch of spots getting into the mid-40s and more of the same down the shore and clouds and sun and breezy and cool and windchills in the 30s across the region. bundle up a bit if you head out.
