abc's senior justice correspondent pierre thomas who is in washington leading us off. pierre, good morning to you. >> reporter: dan, good morning. cnn is reporting that mueller's special counsel team brought charges before a grand jury. we know attorneys from mueller's office were at the federal courthouse here in d.c. on friday including one of his senior prosecutors who specializes in fraud cases. we've learned that there was a filing in court on friday but we have no further reportable details. cnn's not reporting who might have been charged or what the charges could be. so this is a very unusual situation, and it's unclear how significant these -- this potential action might be, dan. what we know is that mueller's team has been investigating whether there was collusion between the trump campaign and russian officials in connection with the 2016 presidential election, and he's been investigating the financial dealings of a number of key trump associates including former campaign manager paul manafort and former national security adviser michael flynn. sources close to manafort say they have been given no indication any charges against him are imminent. we reached out to people tied to flynn and got no comment but

this is a reminder that mueller's investigation is sweeping, complicated and those who are being investigated are in legal jeopardy. >> absolutely, pierre. thank you. and given the near daily drip on this russia story, it is easy to lose context of it all. >> let's bring in abc's gloria riviera with a look at what led up to these charges. gloria, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan, good morning, cecilia. as you know, president trump has long dismissed the russia probe as a witch-hunt, but new reports indicate the special counsel's investigation could be turning a new corner reportedly issuing the first charges that could implicate the president's own associates. president trump has long dismissed the russia probe as nothing more than a political distraction. >> the whole russia thing was an excuse for the democrats losing the election, and it turns out to be just one excuse. >> reporter: and that message continues to the white house. and the party line. >> our position hasn't changed since day one. and i think we are seeing now that if there was any collusion with russia it was between the dnc and the clintons and

certainly not our campaign. >> reporter: questions are mounting over separate reports by cnn and "the wall street journal" saying the first criminal charges have been filed in independent counsel bob mueller's investigation into the trump campaign's alleged ties to the russian government. the indictments are still sealed under orders from a federal judge. abc news has not independently matched that reporting. the news comes at a time when we're also learning more about who was behind that infamous intelligence dossier alleging ties between trump and the russians. the conservative website "washington free beacon" said friday it originally hired the research firm fusion gps to provide research on multiple candidates but insists it did not pay for the dossier and did not have any dealings with the former british intelligence officer who ultimately produced the dossier citing russian sources. >> might have started with a republicans early on in the primaries. i think i would know but let's find out who it is. i'm sure that will come out. >> do you know who those

republicans are? do you have any idea? >> i think -- i think i would have -- if i were to guess, i have one name in mind. >> the house intelligence committee says it is working with "the free beacon" to verify its claims it had no involvement with the dossier and man who produced it. >> thank you. cecilia, i want to bring you in on this since you cover the white house every day. what do you think -- how are they reacting to this news about the first charges from mueller? >> well, certainly the public front is everything is calm, business as usual. one aide last night was tweeting it's a quiet night at the white house. and certainly they're not going to back down from this claim that this is a witch-hunt. that is the narrative. the president wag tweeting on it yesterday saying there is no collusion between the russians and me. that is the public reaction. i can tell you from speaking to a lot of sources inside this white house people are nervous in that they're lawyering up. the president has picked up the tab for some of those lawyers. this is an investigation certainly circling in and closing in on some aides close to the president and know these

questions and know this investigation is not going away so privately people are definitely starting to feel this. >> lots of lawyers involved. for more on all this, let's bring in abc news political commentator cokie roberts who is in washington. cokie, let me ask you, how nervous do you think the white house should be? >> well, once these special prosecutors going, it's very unsettling for white houses, and grand juries leak, and we start to learn lots of information, and, unfortunately, though, for the principal, they don't leak enough. and so what you have is a lot of speculation and a lot of finger-pointing without a lot of facts, and that goes on for months and months and months often, and that can be very disspiriting to a white house because they're trying to get something done, and they're constantly having to worry about this investigation, and i think that's likely to go on for a long time. >> and it's certainly on their minds if the president's tweets are any indication, but, cokie,

i want to ask you about something else that was in the news and has been at the top of all of our newscasts here. those files that were just released in the jfk assassination. you have some personal experience with that. what do you think will come of all this? >> well, my father was on the warren commission, and i do remember actually him being on the phone talking to lyndon johnson and saying, we need to name a blue ribbon commission, otherwise, the american people will never feel like we've investigated this crime of the assassination. now, of course, what happened was just the opposite, they were hoping to bring everything out and let the american people feel comfortable about the fact that they knew who the assassin was and now we've had these 40, 50 years of not knowing or of people feeling like there's something being hidden and by not having all -- every single one of the papers released on thursday, what you have is the conspiracy starting right up again. just stirring the pot of the kennedy conspiracy people.

>> cokie, let me ask you about another story that's a little bit more current and a lot of people have been talking about this, this tiny company out of whitefish, montana, that got hired to restore power in puerto rico. some people are pointing out that the owner of the company has political ties to people in trump's orbit. how big a story do you think this is? >> i don't think this one goes terribly far. after a major disaster, all kinds of funny things happen because there's a whole lot of money being thrown at a problem and people get rich off of it. after the bp oil spill in louisiana, the cynics were referring to spillionaires so you have all kinds of shady things going on, and this one is likely to be off, not something that we would have recommended on an ethical basis, but i don't think it's likely to rise to a major story. >> not shady, our political guru

cokie roberts, thank you, cokie. great to have you with us this morning. we want to turn to another headline out of washington. the me too campaign is coming to capitol hill now. >> kongwomen now stepping forward sharing their stories about sexual harassment and assault and abc's david wright is here with much more on that. david, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan and cecilia. the epidemic of stories about sexual misconduct and outright assault have made it to capitol hill. not in the form of new legislation, but rather new allegations. a congresswoman and her staffers are calling out what they call a culture of tolerance of bad behavior. the congresswoman inspired by the women who began this tough conversation in hollywood. silent no more, the actress rose mcgowan in her first appearance since accusing harvey weinstein of rape 20 years ago. >> i have been harassed, i've been maligned, and you know what, i'm just like you. >> reporter: defiant she says sexual harassment and assault

will not be ignored. >> name it, shame it, call it out. >> reporter: now the me too movement she helped to spark has caught fire on capitol hill. >> many of us in congress know what it's like because congress has been a breeding ground for a hostile work environment for far too long. >> reporter: california congresswoman jackie speier launching me too congress urging lawmakers and staffers to speak out by sharing her own story. >> so i know what it's like to keep these hidden deep down inside. i know what it's like to lie awake in bed at night wondering if i was the one who had done something wrong. >> reporter: she is not alone. senator claire mccaskill says as a young state legislator, she asked an older male colleague for help. his advice? >> he said, well, did you bring your knee pads. i do think he was joking, but it was shocking that he would make that joke to a colleague.

>> reporter: a recent survey found that 40% of female congressional staffers cite sexual harassment as a problem on capitol hill. one in six female aides said they experience sexual harassment in their offices. but unlike many workplaces, on the hill there is no mandatory sexual harassment training. to file a complaint, victims must go through counseling, mediation and a cooling off period before filing a legal claim. all while working in the very same environment where the alleged harassment took place. allegations of workplace sexual abuse that have rocked hollywood and politics are also hitting home in the world of journalism. this morning, political analyst mark halperin is apologizing after allegations of sexual harassment when he was political director here at abc news. in a lengthy statement, halperin apologized to the women he mistreated admitting his behavior caused fear and anxiety

for women who were only seeking to do their jobs. now, halperin does not dispute the specific details of the allegations against him but insists that some of those allegations are not true. harvey weinstein for his part has admitted to sexual misconduct but denied the allegations of sexual assault. of course, authorities here in new york, in london and los angeles are investigating him. >> much more to come on all these story, david, thank you very much. we appreciate it. we want to move on to new information we're learning this morning about the ambush in niger that killed four american special ops soldiers. >> abc's senior attorney correspondent ian pannell is on the ground in niger with the latest on this attack and the hunt for those responsible. ian, good morning. >> reporter: this morning, a new piece to the puzzle regarding the deadly and sophisticated attack here in niger that left four american soldiers dead. a senior intelligence official telling abc news there was a convoy of three trucks fleeing the deadly ambush, two making it out to the so-called kill zone but the third truck was cut off

from the other vehicles unable to communicate with the group. staff sergeants black, johnson and wright were in this vehicle, sergeant la david johnson in the third reportedly opening fire on the attackers, but it's unclear when. the official telling abc the stranded vehicle was hit with mortar and gunfire killing all three soldiers. two hours later french jets came into the battle zone flying low, which officials tell us caused the attackers to scatter preventing more fatalities. the remaining survivors then evacuating by helicopter. but many questions remain back home. above all, what was their mission, and should they have been better supported? and why was sergeant la david johnson left behind, his body only recovered two days later? >> it's a dangerous business, so i didn't know specifically. i gave them authority to do what's right so that we win. >> reporter: so what we're now hearing from officials this morning is that there is a military operation being planned against the perpetrators of this attack and other attacks in the area.

we're being told that this has been accelerated because of the death of the four american soldiers. we don't know exactly when this is taking place, but we're told it's soon and it will have american support. dan, paula. >> okay, ian, thank you. we want to turn to a harrowing story from the sports world. >> it was during a plane ride and erielle reshef has the story. erielle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan and cecilia. it was certainly a scare overnight for the oklahoma city thunder. the basketball team landing to find this huge dent in the nose of their charter plane. delta saying it was caused by a is timberwolves friday night and they were on their way to chicago's midway airport. this morning delta says the 757 likely hit that bird on its descent. maintenance teams are now looking into this. the team is set to play the chicago bulls tonight. i have to say, dan and cecilia, thunder up. >> well, good for the thunder. i'm glad they're safe but that

cecilia, adrienne, robert and good morning, everyone. we're going to begin in spain with an unprecedented show of force by the country's leaders. the national government there taking political control of the region of catalonia overnight. this after catalonia's leaders voted for independence. abc's chief foreign correspondent terry moran is in barcelona, that region's capital and he has more. terry. >> reporter: good morning, ron. according to the government, many of the people here, i am standing in the world's newest country, catalonia, they seceded from spain and that's caused this crisis because spain says that's illegal. the spanish constitution holding that this is an indivisible nation and no other country in the world has recognized this declaration of independence. the u.s. state department issuing a very tough statement against what they've done here and backing spain to the hilt. and now spain has issued orders that all the political leaders who issued this declaration of independence are fired. the government is dissolved and they are taking over direct control of this region from madrid, so what happens next?

well, no one really knows, and while it looks like a very normal day here in beautiful barcelona, there is a threat of violence in the air, for spain to take political control, they'll probably have to take physical control at least of the government buildings. the leader of the 20,000 strong police force here says he won't obey their orders so this is a region and a country on edge. ron. >> terry moran reporting from barcelona. and back in the u.s. in california, a 54-year-old man named marlon coy is under arrest charged with three felony counts for arson for allegedly starting the bear fire that scorched 331 acres of santa cruz county. that happened earlier this month. that fire lasted for ten days destroying four homes, two homes and four buildings and 17 vehicles. more than a dozen firefighters injured in that blaze. and tiger woods pleaded guilty in florida to reckless driving. the palm beach county judge placed him on probation. this happened on friday avoiding sending him to jail but on the condition that he stays out of further legal trouble.

woods was, of course, arrested last may for failing a police roadside sobriety test. prosecutors say he had five different drugs in his system including vicodin, xanax and ambien. and there's a new rich evidence man in the world. it's rob. it's not rob. okay. it's amazon ceo jeff bezos reclaiming the top spot from microsoft co-founder bill gates. bezos' net worth now more than $90 billion edging ahead of gates and his 88.5 billion bucks. the two could keep trading places depending on markets. the last time that bezos was number one it only lasted a few hours. if you're wondering about the richest woman, up until last month it was liliane bettencourt of l'oreal but she died last month. okay, moving on, hopefully. we're not moving on? i'm done. they got the hook on me. i'm out of here. >> we want one more story. >> i'm out of here. i got another story but i'll save it for tomorrow. >> okay.

11 members of a now closed fraternity are facing additional charges this morning in the death of a pledge. >> yeah, prosecutors have refiled most of the counts tossed out by a judge last month. abc's eva pilgrim is here with the story. eva, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the facts of this case are hard to hear. what we know, 19-year-old timothy piazza lay inside a penn state frat house for hours with a fractured skull, damaged spleen and several other injuries as a result of the hazing ritual. now, prosecutors saying if someone had called for help, his life could have been saved. this morning, they're pushing for justice. almost two months after a judge threw out the most severe charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault in the death of 19-year-old timothy piazza, prosecutors are now asking for a new judge, refiling those charges friday adding that more charges could be coming. >> this prosecutor may be betting that if she is able to get a new judge, that judge may find that there is probable cause with respect to some of the more serious charges.

>> reporter: prosecutors maintain surveillance video from inside the beta theta pi house shows a visibly drunk piazza falling head first down a flight of stairs, struggling in pain for hours. his fellow frat brothers waiting 12 hours before calling 911. 18 brothers were initially charged. 14 of the cases now going forward. four completely cleared including joe ems who said he thought piazza was sleeping it off. >> i wasn't fully aware of what was going on. i didn't see the fall. >> joey ems is long gone before this morphs into a young fella who looks like a drunken frat kid to a young man in obvious distress. he's home sleeping at that point. >> reporter: this morning prosecutors saying this investigation is not over. authorities still looking into some unanswered questions. >> we have to be the advocates of change. tim is not just our son anymore. he represents every son and

daughter of every family that has someone that they want to send to college that they want to participate in greek life. >> guys, i was in court the day they played that security video. piazza's family chose not to watch it. they say they didn't want that to be the last memory they had of their son alive. the family saying they support the prosecutor's commitment to bring timothy justice. that video, though, just very hard to watch. >> of course. i've sat with the family as well. they are distraught and understandably so. good for them for staying strong. eva, thank you very much. let's get back to the weather now and it is a. as we've said, a busy weekend in the weather department. we have snow, right, but we are in hurricane season we're watching a disturbance 170 southwest of havana. the forecast is for it to become a tropical storm as pick up speed and accelerate, north and east. tropical storm warning out for

he stood up to north jersey special interests nobody delivers more for south jersey than steve sweeney. to increase funding for our schools. he stopped christie's commuter tax, saving south jersey residents over 200 million dollars. and he led the charge to pass paid family leave. aarp applauded sweeney for freezing property taxes for seniors and cutting prices on prescription drugs. video we see the boy once he finally stops the car. the child's parents arrive just as he's being taken into custody. >> i want y'all to take his [ bleep ] to jail. that's what i want. we not taking him home. >> he'll go to detention hall. >> reporter: and the cops weren't the only authority figure after him. his mom was also in the hot pursuit. >> my 10-year-old stole his dad's car and i'm following him and he's running from me. >> reporter: was watch as the car crosses over the highway median. >> he running. >> and into oncoming traffic. >> block him in. do not let him get by. >> reporter: the wild ride reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour on the ohio turnpike. >> if i hadn't yielded to him he would have hit me right there by the roadblock. he went right at me. >> reporter: the 50-mile-long ride ends after he knocks over a highway sign and officers able to box the vehicle in between two patrol car and arrest their guy. >> i told him he could have hurt somebody. he could have hurt himself or he could have been killed. you could have killed somebody else. >> he's in custody. >> reporter: amazingly no one was hurt during all of this but
