good morning, welcome to "news4 today." i'm eun yang. >> good morning, i'm aaron gilchrist. we are off to a calm start. but those wild storms on the minds of a lot of people this morning. we know that nearly a dozen tornadoes touched down in maryland and virginia causing millions of dollars in damage. nine of them were in maryland on friday. the national weather service confirms three twisters came down in montgomery county, two touched down in carroll county, one in prince george's county, and one in anne arundel county. so far, the strongest twisters touched down in howard and hartford counties. those were classified an ef1 with winds of at least 86 miles per hour. two tornadoes touched down in virginia. none in our area, though. crews are still investigating reports of funnel clouds from friday's storm, and it could take several days to get a final count on the tornadoes. no really major, major damage. no people got hurt. it was a busy day for sure on friday with all those storms. it led to a very nice weekend, too. yeah. a lot of photos that were posted

of funnel clouds on friday. then i was posting them up on twitter and facebook. in fact, one of them -- i'm going to show you that coming up this half-hour, i had over 10,000 views of that one photo. it's amazing. i'll show that coming up. right now, this view all calm, peaceful, and tranquil. look at that star shine over the potomac. live view from our h.d. city camera on this monday morning. i'm gazing in breathless wonder once again. now i need some oxygen. gorgeous shot. live view. and it's 63 now at reagan national. and we've got it comfortably dry. it is a perfect spring morning. and it's -- the cool side. look around our hometown network. germantown down to just 53 in northern montgomery county. manassas, prince william county, down to 55. also 55 in prince george's county at andrews. and in fairfax county, mid to upper 50s, as well. it's going to stay cool throughout much of the day.

6:02 now. breaking news in iraq this morning. 13 people are dead, killed by a car bomb that went off near some government offices in baghdad. more than 50 others are hurt. the explosion happened just a little while ago in the late morning in iraq. no claim of responsibility yet for this attack. jury selection will begin today for the man accused of killing a father and son during an armed robbery two years ago. that shooting happened inside the leda wholesale market along 5th street in washington, d.c., in june of 2010. christian taylor shot and killed 59-year-old minku chi and his son. jury selection set to start at 9:00. opening statements expected to begin tomorrow. a horrifying and tragic event. that's how fire officials describe the deadly crash of an air tanker battling a wildfire in utah. both crew members on board that plane died when it went down yesterday afternoon in utah's hamblin valley. they were fighting a 5,000-acre

wildfire burning along the utah/nevada border. emergency crews in nigeria say a passenger jet crash killed all 153 people on board and at least ten more people on the ground. the jet crashed in the biggest city of lago yesterday afternoon. investigators say the pilot, who we just learned is an american, contacted the airport tower and reported engine trouble before he tried to land. nigeria's president says the country will observe three days of mourning to honor the victims. today mitt romney will try to close a sizable fundraising gap in washington state. the presumptive republican presidential nominee is holding a fundraiser tonight in seattle. romney has raised less than 1/3 of the money president obama has raised in washington state. president obama will campaign today with former president bill clinton. the two will hold phrasers in new york city. they include a gala and reception on broadway that's being called broadway for barak. several celebrities are expected to attend the fundraiser.

okay, the guy who ended the war in iraq, the guy who says you should be able to marry anyone you want, and the guy who created four million new jobs, that guy, president obama and michelle, are coming to my house for dinner on june 14. and i want you to be there, too. >> this ad debuted last night during the mtv movie awards. in the commercial, actress sarah jessica parker urges supporters to enter a contest to win a spot at dinner. nchlt i can say that he had nearly a trillion dollars in stimulus, and that was one-time spending. >> did it help? >> help us in the short run with health care and education spending? did it been the budget, sure. does it help us in the long term to really cut the unemployment rate? i'd say no. >> mcdonnell told cnn yesterday the stimulus programs did some good for virginia. still, he says this country

would benefit more from a republican agenda. he did not talk about speculation that he could be mitt romney's running mate. 6:05. 60 degrees. ahead, the first of many awards for the nationals' new slugger. a gruesome scene with a very troubling motive. who investigators are looking for. and a cool, comfortable start to the day.

when mitt romney says "planned parenthood we're gonna get rid of that." romney is saying he'll deny women the birth control and cancer screenings they depend on. when romney says "do i believe the supreme court should overturn roe v. wade? yes." he's saying he'll deny women the right to make their own medical decisions and when his campaign can't say whether he'd support equal pay protections. "and we'll get back to you on that." romney's putting your paycheck at risk. planned parenthood action fund is responsible for the content of this advertising because mitt romney is out of touch and wrong for women.

this is really the first of many awards expected for bryce harper. the 19-year-old has been named the national league's rookie of the month for may. harper hit 271 -- .271 with four home runs or .27 with four home runs. he played well in june, too. had a home run and a double in a

cooperative when he returned to jail last night after six weeks out. he will wake up in seminole county for the first time in six weeks. his attorneys hoping sometime this week they can get the bond hearing and continue, as they say, to move forward. >> how quickly could things move? if he is granted another bond hearing, does that mean that there would be a much higher bond to post to get out again? >> reporter: you would think that it would be a bit higher. the judge is open to hearing explanation from george zimmerman's side. his wife also involved in raising this money on out the web site. he wants to hear idea money was not reported. attorneys for zimmerman will tell you, look, he surrendered voluntarily. that is proof that he is not a flight risk and the bond should not be raised. he should be allowed to work on his defense. that will be up to judge lester

to determine whether it will be raised. most who deserved the case, who have been following think it will be raised a bit the next time around. >> one question about george zimmerman's wife. we know she testified by phone the last time. do we expect her to appear in court if there's another hearing? and what trouble might she face? >> reporter: yeah. no determination on that to this point that we know of. she could face difficulty if it's determined that she purposely hid from the courts the idea that they had raised money. the focus is on getting this new hearing. and figuring out exactly what happened and where to go from here, aaron. >> all right. jay gray live in sanford, florida. thank you. 6:17. the child sex abuse trial against former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky will start tomorrow with jury selection. the 68-year-old is accused of molesting ten base over a 15-year -- boys over a 15-year period. he pled not guilty. a judge denied his lawyer's request to delay the trial so they could have more time to

prepare. legal experts say the case will depend heavily on the credibility of the prosecution's witnesses due to little if any evidence in the case. police found the bodies of five people burned beyond recognition in an suv in the arizona desert. the sheriff believes the murders may be spillover from drug violence in mexico. the area is a well known smuggling corridor for drugs and illegal immigrants. the sheriff says it is still rare to see this kind of crime so close to the phoenix area. so far, no arrests have been made in that case. the manhunt for an adult film actor wanted for murder in canada is taking investigators all the way to europe. police in paris are now investigating reports that luca rocco magnata has been spotted in the french capital. he's wanted in montreal. police say he killed a man he was dating, videotaped the attack, and mailed the victim's body parts to the headquarters of canada's conservative and liberal political parties. 6:18 now. new leaked documents from the vatican show the pope's butler is not the only one who has

stolen confidential information. italian newspaper says it has new secret documents showing that paolo gabriele had information. he was charged with stealing the correspondence. new findings show that pope benedict's personal secretary could also have accessed confidential files. police are expected to question gabriele this week. you may want to hear this story before you make coffee. black and decker is recalling nearly 160,000 coffeemakers after dozens of people were cut and burned. the handle on the spacemaker under the coffeemakers can break off. the recall covers the 12-cup programmable version. black and decker reports more than 1,200 complaints including 68 injuries. the coif coffeemake -- coffee makers were sold from july, 2008, until last month. tiger woods has struggled

working to determine exactly how it started. some shoppers inside a local whole foods market became sick because of a bizarre incident. firefighters say someone said off a can of pepper spray inside the store in rockville yesterday. the store was evacuated for some time while the building was ventilated. a few people did get sick. no one needed to go to the hospital, though. no word on who set off the pepper spray. an 18-year-old security guard injured in baseball bat attack at a daycare center in landover has a long road to recovery. jalen farmer steppeded in when michael young walked into the daycare center in april and got upset when he couldn't use the phone. farmer had a baseball bat, but young wrestled it from him and beat him with the bat. young stole the car keys of one of the other employees and escaped. police later arrested him. farmer was severely injured in the attack. >> he has a long road ahead of him. it's going to be a rough road.

however, his spirits are up. he doesn't see himself as a hero, but of course his family and friends and everyone that's been here for him, we all see him as a hero. >> farmer's family says he took the job to help pay for college. the waldorf jaycees are planning an appreciation dinner for him next month. the proceeds will help pay for his medical expenses. 6:34 now. new numbers out this morning show gas prices are still heading in the right direction. according to aaa, the average price for gas dropped three cents overnight in the district. a gallon of regular is $3.69 this morning. in maryland, you're paying $3.51, down almost a penny. virginia's average dropped about a half a cent, as well. it's still at $3.39. and drivers in west virginia are paying about a penny less at $3.64. analysts expect that gas prices will keep dropping well into the summer. financial help to homeowners in northern virginia. nearly 1,000 people in prince william county and manassas and manassas park are eligible for refinancing as thanks to a $25

billion mortgage settlement. prince william county in particular reported more than 16,000 foreclosures during the housing crisis. more than 10% of all homes in the county. new this morning, the vietnamese government will open three new sites to help search for american soldiers' remain from the war. defense secretary leon panetta says there are nearly 1,300 cases of missing american soldiers, and about 600 of those remain could be recovered. the announcement came as panetta and his vietnamese counterpart exchanged artifacts collected during the war. 6:35 our time. ahead at 6:55, you have to see it. the alarm clock that will wake you up and get your heart racing. an impressive display across the pond. and major changes coming to metro. today, where riders can ask the agency's ceo about them in person. and one chance to witness an historic journey.

countdown to one of the most dramatic service changes in history. news4's tracee wilkins live at the franconia/springfield metro station to clear up how it rush-plus thing works. >> reporter: yeah, there's a lot of changes. behind me, you see a team passing out bags and maps, getting folks adjusted to how this will work. the point behind the program is to try and ease congestion and transfers riders need to make through out-the-system. the maps are posted, but it does not start until june 18. metro spokesmen say it will improve the commute for 110,000 customers on the green, yellow, blue, and orange lines. 21 stations will get more frequent service with six additional trains every hour. during peak periods, customers will get six additional trains, three in each direction between

vienna and largo town center. metro officials predict this will add an estimated 2,600 seats per hour, although the blue line will lose some trains. for the first time you'll be able to travel from greenbelt to franconia/springfield without transfer on the new dashed yellow line. they have dashed yellow lines operating during rush only. there's also a new dashed orange line coming from largo to vienna. so this sounds i'm sure confusing for a lot of folks who use metro. they're their are going to be big changes coming up and a lot of adjusting that people have to do. joining us live is richard sarles, general manager for metro. good morning. thank you for joining us. >> good to be here. thank you for being here. >> reporter: let's talk about the confusion and the fact that you have a lot of work here trying to explain all of this to folks. >> we're in the final countdown. two weeks from today, june 18, we provide the additional rush hour service, as well as other trains that will provide for, you know, transfer. and people have -- we want to

crashed through her apartment. police say the woman was hit in the head by a flying tire. she was also thrown from her bed when they car came crashing in around 3:30 yesterday morning at the chestnut ridge apartments on riverdale road. her neighbor, a nurse, stayed with her until emergency crews got to the scene. >> went to the lady's apartment. she was disoriented, yeah. got an ice pack and put it on her head. >> that woman is expected to be okay. police are trying to figure out what caused the car to crash into a building. a shooting two years ago happened inside the leda wholesale market in 2010. police say christian taylor shot and killed 59-year-old minkun chi and his son. jury selection is set to start at 9:00. opening statements are expected to begin tomorrow.

today mitt romney heads to the pacific northwest to raise money for his campaign. his campaign won't give out any details about the event, but republican officials say it will be at a private home. the fundraiser will reportedly cost $2,500 per person. for $10,000, you can attend the private reception and photo op. president obama will be raising money in the big apple today. he and former president bill clinton will attend a series of fundraisers in new york city including a concert on broadway. the president will return to new york later this month for a star-studded fundraiser at actress sarah jessica parker's home. he won't get his endorsement, but the president is getting credit for virginia's economic recovery from its munn governor, bob income donnell. >> he -- bob mr. speaker donnell. >> he had nearly $ 1 trillion in stimulus, one-time spending. did it help in the short run with health care and education spending? did it balance the budget, sure. does it help us in the long term
