what voters hope to gain from these events. specific actions matthews board of commissioners could take tonight. good monday morning to you. i'm stephanie maxwell. >> and i'm john paul. those stories here in just a moment. first though, many waking up to fog this morning. meteorologist vicki graf joins us to tell us about the threats for storms today as well. >> this morning fog is going to be the problem. visibility are limited just north of charlotte from lincolnton, concord and boone. be on the lookout for that. keep on low beams and take it slow on the roads. however as we go throughout the afternoon, it is going to be warm and muggy and that is going to set the stage for strong, possibly severe storms later today. the storm prediction center has placed us under a slight risk for severe storms but the storms aren't going to get here until later in the day. any lingering showers we had overnight, those have cleared out. really we are looking at more

threat for storms and the timeline of when they will arrive in your neighborhood, coming up. we begin with a major story we are following throughout the day. several presidential candidates will be making stops across north carolina. >> hillary clinton, bernie sanders and donald trump will all hold campaign events in the state. republican candidate donald trump will speak at lenoir- rhyne university. the event will be open to more than 1400 people. in the past week several protests outside trump's events have become violent. protesters are expected to show up starting at 6:00 this morning but the university is not taking any chances. university security officers are working with the hickory police department and u.s. secret service to make sure everyone is safe. >> i have every confidence in our community that we will handle this, whether you are pro trump or antitrump, that

be able to have open dialogue which is what the university really wants to see happen. >> the doors will open in just about three and a half hours. seats are available on a first come first served basis. bernie sanders and hillary clinton will also be campaigning tonight. the two faced off at a town hall at ohio state. tonight hillary clinton will speak in uptown at 9:15. meanwhile sanders will hold a rally in university city at 4:30 this afternoon. doors will be opening three hours before that. supporters of both candidates say they are excited to hear their message. >> once people understand what bernie is about, then they will most definitely vote for him. >> she is not a perfect candidate for everyone. for me she is. >> we reached out to cmpd and both venues about their security plans for tonight and

you can count on us to bring you complete team coverage starting at 5:00. north carolina voters will make several choices tomorrow. they will select picks for their party's nominee for president, governor and attorney general. voters will also decide on the $2 billion connect nc bond to fund education sewer and safety projects across the state. polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 bp. early voting is officially over and we are getting a look at the grand total for our area. officials say more than 56,000 people participated in early voting. here are the top three busiest early voting locations. 6000 were cast at south county library, and 4800 were cast at the morrison lie prairie. 4:34. today matthews town council could vote on a resolution to split from the charlotte- mecklenburg school district. this move comes as the cms board considers changing the student assignment plan. mint hill is also considering a

town leaders say they want to make sure their students get the opportunity to stay in neighborhood schools. they say that would create stability and predictability for parents. huntersville cornelius they have all passed similar resolutions. they asked cms leaders to make sure every student has a seat in their neighborhood schools. lake norman's chamber of commerce sent a letter to the board requesting those same conditions. more than 70,000 people responded to a student assignment survey. which outlined the top three concerns. 80% of those surveyed said school staffing is most important to them. 75% said school environment. 67% said location. and how close those schools were to home. matthews board of commissioners meet tonight at 6:30 at the town hall. you can count on channel 9 to let you know what happens. >> the highway patrol is

series of crashes involving 100 vehicles in alamance county. outside greensboro last night, more than 20 people were injured but no one was killed. the interstate was shut down for hours creating nearly six miles of back-ups but roads reopened around 11:00 last night. one driver said she was almost involved in the crash herself. >> the car in front of us came to a sudden halt. >> reporter: meteorologists say there were storms in the area but investigators have not said what they believe caused the original crash. starting today an intersection will close so work can be done on the blue line. a portion of j. w. clay boulevard and north tryon street will shut down 9:00 this morning. drivers with a suspended license can now apply to have suspensions lifted early. to qualify drivers must meet

suspension and all fees have to be paid. the program through the week and aims to help suspended drivers with excessive points, those who operate an unlicensed taxi or uninsured car and drivers who got behind the wheel while their license was suspended. happening today officials will hold a public meeting on duke energy's coal ash clean up. the meeting will focus on the clicksafe sid steam station and the rogers energy complex. those are declared low risk and must be closed and capped by 2029. the meeting starts at 6:00 at the boiling springs town hall. the state is holding meetings in each county where duke has a coal ash pond. the allen steam plant is classified as a high priority site. which means the coal ash will have to be removed by 2019. a south carolina lawmaker wants a religious phrase placed in every school.

a man accused of shooting a woman in hickory sunday morning. >> madison more relevantly is charged. helen bomber was found suffering from a gunshot wound, she is in critical condition. a family is mourning a 16- year-old killed in this crash in watauga county. our partners at go blue ridge dot net sent us these pictures from the scene. brandon aldridge was killed

embankment sunday afternoon. survived. immediately called 911. >> i'm guessing he just lost control of his car. >> reporter: the witness saw the teen swerve into oncoming traffic before the car flipped and hit a tree. troopers say the road was wet. students at winthrop university may be paying more this fall semester. the reason the school is considering raising student fees, but not tuition. a judge has thrown out a man's 30-year prison sentence. ahead at 4:45, the defense attorney's serious misstep that prompted the judge's decision.

some neighbors fear a school would deter new businesses from the area but others say students there need another option. tonight's meeting begins at 6:00 at the government center uptown. a trooper accused of shooting an unarmed man in columbia could go to court this week. trooper sean group soldier charged with assault and battery. he pulled over levar jones for not wearing a seat belt. prosecutors could call the case as soon as today. a judge has thrown out a man's 30-year prison sentence and conviction because his attorney slept during the trial. that attorney was in former north carolina lawyer nick mackey. the appellate judge in virginia overturned the case friday, citing testimony from other attorneys and jurors. one said mackey slept morning and evening for 30 minutes at least. the suspect was serving time in prison on drug and prostitution

county sheriff in 2007, he won the race but the decision was overturned by the state democratic party. he also pleaded guilty to a contempt of court charge after failing to show up for a client's trial in 2007. we have called the number listed for mackey's office but have not heard back. police in cabarrus county are searching for a suspect wanted in two separate bank robberies. he has sunglasses on. both happened sunday. they were 10 minutes part. the first was wells fargo on highway 49 south and the second was the bank on highway 49 south. leaders meet wednesday to continue talking about the city's budget. cmpd has requested 125 additional police officers and 80 cmpd support staff positions. that is a nearly $17 million request. leaders say trimming expenses

we are also exterran holdings a tax increase could be considered. also happening this week, boone town council will vote on whether to buy a $4.7 million piece of land which borders the south fork new river. council will vote march 17th on whether to purchase this land near the county's brookshire park. the cost. as mentioned earlier we are morning. meteorologist vicki graf is here to look at the forecast and that includes storms late year that's right. and it is quieted, as far as storms are concerned right now on live early warning doppler 9. we did have downpours that pushed through last night. we are going to keep the threat for more storms tonight. they won't get here until later in the day. early this morning, fog is a problem and that is keeping visibility limited from boone, statesville, lincolnton and shelby. turn on your low beams and take it slow on the roads.

and as we head toward midday, we will see more breaks in the clouds with partly cloudy skies today. another warm and muggy day. by 5:00, for your evening drive, some spotty showers but they will be few and far between. we are looking at 8:00 or 9:00, when we start to see this heavier line of downpours pushing through and some could contain storms that are strong to possibly even severe. i just showed you the storm prediction center has placed us under a slight risk for severe storms as we go throughout the day. our main threat will be heavy rain in some of the isolated storms, and you can't rule out hail and damaging winds as well. so keep an eye to the skies, be prepared for quickly changing weather conditions and make sure you have your wsoc-tv weather app handy. it is a warm start to the day. upper 50s to low 60s and we have been dealing with summer-

we'll see that again today. by 9:00, 63 degrees, still patchy fog mainly on the back roads. by midday though, 72 degrees and with the sunshine we will see today, we'll see highs closer to 78 in the charlotte area so stillwell before average. your neighborhood forecast for the mountains, some patchy fog and warmer in the mid-60s with scattered showers and also isolated storms as we go throughout the afternoon. so the bottom line is, keep the rain gear handy as we head through the evening hours. coming up in the next half hour, i'll breakdown your hour by hour forecast for tonight and that is when we have the best chance for seeing some of the strong, possibly severe storms. the rain does clear out overnight and we are looking at sunshine and low 80s for tomorrow and wednesday. by thursday for st. patrick's day a slight chance for showers. you'll notice later in the week and looking ahead to flexion weekend, always in view, not quite as warm. 60s, also tracking the possible

don't have to worry about the winner coat this morning. throughout the day, highs get being into the upper 70s. it will be muggy. the heat and humidity will lead to the threat for storms tonight. i'll have the timeline on when you could see downpours arriving in your neighborhood. let's get a look at the morning drive with mark. later this morning at 9:00 there is going to be restrictions up in the area, happening on north tryon, trying to get on j. w. clay. no left turns. that is currently the case on harris boulevard as well. so in the area, lots of restrictions. again this starts at 9:00, going to last for two weeks. mccullough drive that is how you are going to get around that. other than that, it is quiet as we look at drive times from the university area to uptown, 64 miles per hour heading southbound.
