threat for storms and the timeline of when they will arrive in your neighborhood, coming up. we begin with a major story we are following throughout the day. several presidential candidates will be making stops across north carolina. >> hillary clinton, bernie sanders and donald trump will all hold campaign events in the state. republican candidate donald trump will speak at lenoir- rhyne university. the event will be open to more than 1400 people. in the past week several protests outside trump's events have become violent. protesters are expected to show up starting at 6:00 this morning but the university is not taking any chances. university security officers are working with the hickory police department and u.s. secret service to make sure everyone is safe. >> i have every confidence in our community that we will handle this, whether you are pro trump or antitrump, that

you can count on us to bring you complete team coverage starting at 5:00. north carolina voters will make several choices tomorrow. they will select picks for their party's nominee for president, governor and attorney general. voters will also decide on the $2 billion connect nc bond to fund education sewer and safety projects across the state. polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 bp. early voting is officially over and we are getting a look at the grand total for our area. officials say more than 56,000 people participated in early voting. here are the top three busiest early voting locations. 6000 were cast at south county library, and 4800 were cast at the morrison lie prairie. 4:34. today matthews town council could vote on a resolution to split from the charlotte- mecklenburg school district. this move comes as the cms board considers changing the student assignment plan. mint hill is also considering a

town leaders say they want to make sure their students get the opportunity to stay in neighborhood schools. they say that would create stability and predictability for parents. huntersville cornelius they have all passed similar resolutions. they asked cms leaders to make sure every student has a seat in their neighborhood schools. lake norman's chamber of commerce sent a letter to the board requesting those same conditions. more than 70,000 people responded to a student assignment survey. which outlined the top three concerns. 80% of those surveyed said school staffing is most important to them. 75% said school environment. 67% said location. and how close those schools were to home. matthews board of commissioners meet tonight at 6:30 at the town hall. you can count on channel 9 to let you know what happens. >> the highway patrol is

series of crashes involving 100 vehicles in alamance county. outside greensboro last night, more than 20 people were injured but no one was killed. the interstate was shut down for hours creating nearly six miles of back-ups but roads reopened around 11:00 last night. one driver said she was almost involved in the crash herself. >> the car in front of us came to a sudden halt. >> reporter: meteorologists say there were storms in the area but investigators have not said what they believe caused the original crash. starting today an intersection will close so work can be done on the blue line. a portion of j. w. clay boulevard and north tryon street will shut down 9:00 this morning. drivers with a suspended license can now apply to have suspensions lifted early. to qualify drivers must meet

some neighbors fear a school would deter new businesses from the area but others say students there need another option. tonight's meeting begins at 6:00 at the government center uptown. a trooper accused of shooting an unarmed man in columbia could go to court this week. trooper sean group soldier charged with assault and battery. he pulled over levar jones for not wearing a seat belt. prosecutors could call the case as soon as today. a judge has thrown out a man's 30-year prison sentence and conviction because his attorney slept during the trial. that attorney was in former north carolina lawyer nick mackey. the appellate judge in virginia overturned the case friday, citing testimony from other attorneys and jurors. one said mackey slept morning and evening for 30 minutes at least. the suspect was serving time in prison on drug and prostitution

county sheriff in 2007, he won the race but the decision was overturned by the state democratic party. he also pleaded guilty to a contempt of court charge after failing to show up for a client's trial in 2007. we have called the number listed for mackey's office but have not heard back. police in cabarrus county are searching for a suspect wanted in two separate bank robberies. he has sunglasses on. both happened sunday. they were 10 minutes part. the first was wells fargo on highway 49 south and the second was the bank on highway 49 south. leaders meet wednesday to continue talking about the city's budget. cmpd has requested 125 additional police officers and 80 cmpd support staff positions. that is a nearly $17 million request. leaders say trimming expenses
