are doing go-go in heaven. >> fox amorning news continues right now. right now. south a sad day as washington, d.c. wakes up but we have some nice weather to look forward to today, folks. it is thursday, may 17th, 2012. good morning. i'm sarah simmons. >> i'm will thomas. welcome to fox 5 morning news. all morning, right here, we'll look back on the influence of chuck brown, the godfather of go-go. everybody knows d.c.'s cease side, the monuments, the politic. but chuck brown's beat fueled the heart of the city. he passed with a yesterday at the age of 75. >> hundreds of fans also gathered outside the howard theater last night for an incident prompt use vigil there. he was set to perform there in front of a sold high pressure out crowd next month. this morning, we are sharing some of your femmeries on our facebook page. let's take a look at i few of

leaves behind for the city he loved. >> joining us now is go-go ambassador himself d. j. flex from wpgc. >> good morning. >> let's get right into it. chuck brown not only pioneered go-go music but he did influence other types of music, other artists as well, right? >> yeah, he had an ininfluence. there has been a lot of groups in the past that have used some of chuck's music. it transcends not only from go- go to you to hip-hop. everybody is a fan of chuck brown. he worked with jill scott. >> what did he mean to you personally as a d j.? >> he ad h. an ini had cent influence on me. wouldn't be doing what i'm doing. i remember my first time ever

seeing chuck brown was at a club in the mid-80s and it was crazy. i've never seen anything like that. the people were going crazy. it was amazing. it was just such an amazing experience that it lit a big fire under me to want to be really in the music that hard. >> for people who haven't been to one of his shows and i was luck y enough to do that once, it is incredible. one of his friends told us, even in japan, he those the words to the songs. >> the thing in japan, they don't speak any english but they know all the words to all his songs. chuck did a few tours over there in japan and one of the things i love about chuck that's comes on to the stage and he just tunes his guitar. he just winds up a little bit. nobody introduces him. he just sits there and he does his thing. when the crowd starts chanting, wind me up, chuck. he just falls into it.

>> what are you hearing from the fans snip a sure they are vowbsly devastated. what do you think expect to hear from them today? >> yesterday, i cried. a lot of us cried. -- what are you hearing from the nans fans? i'm sure they are obviously devastated. >> he is the person you want to be like. you want to model yourself after him how humble he is. we're just going to celebrate. we have his music to live on forever. >> would you agree that one of these hinges that makes him so connected to people is his humble beginnings. he did prison time. he traded five cartons of cigarettes to get his first guitar in the slammer. >> he taught himself how to play. his band is always top notch. always have had some of the best horn players and he will have some of his band members going to do national tours with other artists because his band was always that good. >> all right. thank you so much for coming in

fairfax county police are investigating a homicide. a man was found shot in his car last night in the mount vent on area of fairfax county. the man was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. so far, no word on a suspect. the maryland house has approved a budget package in the special legislative session. the house voted 77-60 to raise

we are all looking for easier ways to get in shape these days. so when one company promised it was as simple as slipping on a pair of their shoes, sales skyrocketed. sketchers is being forced to pay up for false advertising. lauren simonetti is live in new york with the business beat. >> good morning. you didn't believe it, did you? >> you know what? i never slipped on a pair. but for those who did and feel that the shoes didn't work, they may be entitle to some money here. >> yes. they are getting their money

back. this is what happened. sketchers actually paid a chiropractor who was the husband of one of their marketing executives to do a study and say yeah, if you wear tone high pressure up toners, shape-up or resistance runners, you will slim down and have a trimmer back side and you will lose weight. none of that happened really. as a result, sketchers is forking over $50 million to the federal trade commission in several states including d.c. for making those false claims. >> did you ever buy a pair? >> no. >> you got to do it the old- fashioned way. >> it takes a lot more than wearing shoes to trim down. >> i agree. let's talk about the markets. how are they looking today? >> a little bit flat. kind of flat at the moment but we are doing better than europe. european stocks are down 2% right. no we have joble claims coming out. we want to see that the labor market is improving but the dow

fox 5's shawn yancy got the chance to go one on one with the legend not too long ago. she has more what he says was the key to keeping his groundbreaking career going on. >> one more time. >> reporter: for five decades, chalk brown gave his fans husband all, keeping them on his feet with heart-thumping go- go beats, a type of music he created in the early '1r0. >> they had go-go clubs, go-go girls, go-go dancers. no go-go music. he decided to call it go-go music. >> reporter: in 2010, chuck earned his first ever grammy nam nation. >> it was the greatest thing, oh, my god. >> reporter: how did it make you feel? >> oh, my god. couldn't believe it. i haven't gotten over it yet. i ain't never going to get over it. >> reporter: chuck started singing gospel when he was just a little beaut but it wasn't

enough to keep him out of trouble. he spent his youth in and out of jails. lorton penitenty in northern virginia is the place that gave life to his musical year. >> after i did about three of those shows, i knew that i was going to be something. when i got out of there, i wasn't going back no more. >> reporter: early in chuck's career, played guitar with jerry butler and the earls of rhythm. his biggest hit came in the late 1970s. & i feel like busting loose &&. >> we did busing loose in '78, that is what wh it took o. >> reporter: chuck creditsies decades of success to his generations of fans and the love of his family. >> i'm inspired by my wife and my children. that is my greatest inspiration. -- we did busting loose in '78.

that is when it took off. >> this morning, the community is mourning the loss of an artist who will be missed by his family, friends and fans. >> early are, we speak to one of chuck brown's closest friends. darryl book is a local promoter who worked with him for many years. he told us what made him so special. >> all right. we don't have audio. >> a personal connection with his audience. would he always give his all. he had one of the biggest hearts. he was the epitome to me of family, of manhood and he made a definite imprint in the music industry. artist as cross-country recognize him as being a mile stone, something to shoot for. >> chuck brown would often schedule his concerts so that he could see his sons play football at virginia tech. chuck brown's impact on music is sure to live on forever.

brown had been scheduled to play at the howard theater next month. >> friends and fans head there had to pay their respects when they got news of his passing. melanie alwin is out front of the howard theater in northwest with more. good morning. >> reporter: it is quiet for you here at the howard theater but, you know, we wanted to show you something. this is not far from where chuck brown used to sell newspapers and shine shoes as a kid. if you look down the street here, right down on seventh street, you see that was named chuck brown way not too long ago and some fans from last night's celebration have left some balloons and some remembrances. they came here to celebrate the life of a lemignot end. chuck brown was supposed to placentia a sold-out show on april 21st, part of the first wave of musicians to celebrate the grand reopening of the howard theater, the historic reopening. he was hospitalized on april 1th. oop as he battled several health problems, his show was still we rescheduled for june

29th. upon learning of his death, hundreds of fans flocked to the howard theater. radio station wkys pump out a continuous stream of his songs through the night of some called it a vigil but others said it was more like a black party and within that would make mr. brown proud. mayor vincent gray releaseed a statement saying it is a very sad day for music lovers the world over but especially in the district of columbia. he says without chuck brown, the world and our city will be a different place. what i aloss. and again, as we've been talking about all morning, as much as he is remembered for his music, he is also remembered very much as being a family man and for his commitment to his community. i think that is one of the nicest things that anyone can ever say about a person. back to you. >> thank you. certainly. a look at this morning's other top stories now. fairfax county police investigating a homicide. a man found shot in his car

today, we'll do something different. that is just kind of remember and talk about chuck brown, some of our favorite memories of the legend and the question people have been asking around the newsroom and wrefer y, what are your favorite chuck brown songs so we can talk about some of those. can i start this thing? >> sure. >> we all i think had the opportunity to meet chuck many times. i don't know how many times i saw chuck perform and had the chance to spend time with him just as everyone knows, a marvelous man. the consummate musician. really great. he is the godfather of go-go and that is something that, you know, that is what he will go down in history as being nope as, the godfather of go-go. but this was a guy would came up through the ranks. first lady in the 50s, the 60s, the 70s. played everything, r & b, jazz. back in the day, he had bands. that is what they did. they maid mousse faulk people

to dance to. you had to play everything. whatever the big pop hits were not charts in the '60s. all that kind of stuff. chuck, one of my favorite songs is moody's mood. i want to play a little bit of that for you. if we can hear just a little bit of that. bit of that. he incorporated a little bit of everything. he put out a lot of go-go stuff but he also put out a couple of jazz things. he had everything. there is a great album that he put out called timele which is him doing jazz stuff. for many of us, the first time we ever heard a young singer named eva cassidy was because check brown introduced us to herself they put out an album. i think it is the only album

they did together called the other side. unfortunately, eva died young so they're both gone now. this is a little bit of it. listen to this. en to this. & makes no difference if you're young or old &&. >> this album is fantastic. she is great. he is great. if you think about the two of them together, you with not think it would work but it works. he introduced this remarkable young talent, eva cassidy, would was very well known in this area. she became known around the country. still hasn't received her due. and he is going to be remembered for that as well. just marvelous. >> so how long did the concert actually last? >> it depended. chuck would be the feature artist at a lot of special events so those sets would be shorter than his own concerts. they could be two hours, three hours. but here is the thing. because of go-go and the call and response and the rhythms and everything, he could do a two-hour concert and that might be six or seven songs because

the songs could be so long, it was really wonderful. >> i love it. >> bobblehead. i never took it out of the box and i'm he not going to. >> where did you get that? >> i believe he gave it to me or his manager gave it to me. that is the sign of a real cool person. >> busting loose is my favorite song and nelly sampled it. >> this is his biggest hit. >> just amazing how he was everywhere even in the d.c. lottery commercial recently. >> he is a d.c. institution. >> and the nat toorks their home run song is now busting loose. -- and the nats too. their home run song is now busting loose. >> what a family man we heard stories about he would do his concerts according to where his sons were playing football. he wanted to attend the games. great family man.

>> we've talked about him so much. he is someone that -- i don't think we'll have the impact of this passing for a while. we are talking about him, celebrating him. he has been a perennial presence. at some point, we're going to realize wow, he is not here anymore and it will be strange but his music lives. >> i was at the dmv yesterday, hey, will, nice to see you. the weather guy segment is my favorite. so what you say it is the most popular segment, he is kind of right. so hi to you at the dmv. >> julie is pretty popular herself. let's get to her and see how the traffic is moving. >> what about block party? >> oh, yes, yes. >> this is the perfect kind of song for block party. i like that. >> move, julie. could o do it. >> it is like let's have a block party. i like that. i'm like all into this. i love that line where he says it is a summertime and the sun don't set till nine.
