leaves behind for the city he loved. >> joining us now is go-go ambassador himself d. j. flex from wpgc. >> good morning. >> let's get right into it. chuck brown not only pioneered go-go music but he did influence other types of music, other artists as well, right? >> yeah, he had an ininfluence. there has been a lot of groups in the past that have used some of chuck's music. it transcends not only from go- go to you to hip-hop. everybody is a fan of chuck brown. he worked with jill scott. >> what did he mean to you personally as a d j.? >> he ad h. an ini had cent influence on me. wouldn't be doing what i'm doing. i remember my first time ever

seeing chuck brown was at a club in the mid-80s and it was crazy. i've never seen anything like that. the people were going crazy. it was amazing. it was just such an amazing experience that it lit a big fire under me to want to be really in the music that hard. >> for people who haven't been to one of his shows and i was luck y enough to do that once, it is incredible. one of his friends told us, even in japan, he those the words to the songs. >> the thing in japan, they don't speak any english but they know all the words to all his songs. chuck did a few tours over there in japan and one of the things i love about chuck that's comes on to the stage and he just tunes his guitar. he just winds up a little bit. nobody introduces him. he just sits there and he does his thing. when the crowd starts chanting, wind me up, chuck. he just falls into it.

>> what are you hearing from the fans snip a sure they are vowbsly devastated. what do you think expect to hear from them today? >> yesterday, i cried. a lot of us cried. -- what are you hearing from the nans fans? i'm sure they are obviously devastated. >> he is the person you want to be like. you want to model yourself after him how humble he is. we're just going to celebrate. we have his music to live on forever. >> would you agree that one of these hinges that makes him so connected to people is his humble beginnings. he did prison time. he traded five cartons of cigarettes to get his first guitar in the slammer. >> he taught himself how to play. his band is always top notch. always have had some of the best horn players and he will have some of his band members going to do national tours with other artists because his band was always that good. >> all right. thank you so much for coming in

fox 5's shawn yancy got the chance to go one on one with the legend not too long ago. she has more what he says was the key to keeping his groundbreaking career going on. >> one more time. >> reporter: for five decades, chalk brown gave his fans husband all, keeping them on his feet with heart-thumping go- go beats, a type of music he created in the early '1r0. >> they had go-go clubs, go-go girls, go-go dancers. no go-go music. he decided to call it go-go music. >> reporter: in 2010, chuck earned his first ever grammy nam nation. >> it was the greatest thing, oh, my god. >> reporter: how did it make you feel? >> oh, my god. couldn't believe it. i haven't gotten over it yet. i ain't never going to get over it. >> reporter: chuck started singing gospel when he was just a little beaut but it wasn't

enough to keep him out of trouble. he spent his youth in and out of jails. lorton penitenty in northern virginia is the place that gave life to his musical year. >> after i did about three of those shows, i knew that i was going to be something. when i got out of there, i wasn't going back no more. >> reporter: early in chuck's career, played guitar with jerry butler and the earls of rhythm. his biggest hit came in the late 1970s. & i feel like busting loose &&. >> we did busing loose in '78, that is what wh it took o. >> reporter: chuck creditsies decades of success to his generations of fans and the love of his family. >> i'm inspired by my wife and my children. that is my greatest inspiration. -- we did busting loose in '78.

that is when it took off. >> this morning, the community is mourning the loss of an artist who will be missed by his family, friends and fans. >> early are, we speak to one of chuck brown's closest friends. darryl book is a local promoter who worked with him for many years. he told us what made him so special. >> all right. we don't have audio. >> a personal connection with his audience. would he always give his all. he had one of the biggest hearts. he was the epitome to me of family, of manhood and he made a definite imprint in the music industry. artist as cross-country recognize him as being a mile stone, something to shoot for. >> chuck brown would often schedule his concerts so that he could see his sons play football at virginia tech. chuck brown's impact on music is sure to live on forever.

brown had been scheduled to play at the howard theater next month. >> friends and fans head there had to pay their respects when they got news of his passing. melanie alwin is out front of the howard theater in northwest with more. good morning. >> reporter: it is quiet for you here at the howard theater but, you know, we wanted to show you something. this is not far from where chuck brown used to sell newspapers and shine shoes as a kid. if you look down the street here, right down on seventh street, you see that was named chuck brown way not too long ago and some fans from last night's celebration have left some balloons and some remembrances. they came here to celebrate the life of a lemignot end. chuck brown was supposed to placentia a sold-out show on april 21st, part of the first wave of musicians to celebrate the grand reopening of the howard theater, the historic reopening. he was hospitalized on april 1th. oop as he battled several health problems, his show was still we rescheduled for june

29th. upon learning of his death, hundreds of fans flocked to the howard theater. radio station wkys pump out a continuous stream of his songs through the night of some called it a vigil but others said it was more like a black party and within that would make mr. brown proud. mayor vincent gray releaseed a statement saying it is a very sad day for music lovers the world over but especially in the district of columbia. he says without chuck brown, the world and our city will be a different place. what i aloss. and again, as we've been talking about all morning, as much as he is remembered for his music, he is also remembered very much as being a family man and for his commitment to his community. i think that is one of the nicest things that anyone can ever say about a person. back to you. >> thank you. certainly. a look at this morning's other top stories now. fairfax county police investigating a homicide. a man found shot in his car

today, we'll do something different. that is just kind of remember and talk about chuck brown, some of our favorite memories of the legend and the question people have been asking around the newsroom and wrefer y, what are your favorite chuck brown songs so we can talk about some of those. can i start this thing? >> sure. >> we all i think had the opportunity to meet chuck many times. i don't know how many times i saw chuck perform and had the chance to spend time with him just as everyone knows, a marvelous man. the consummate musician. really great. he is the godfather of go-go and that is something that, you know, that is what he will go down in history as being nope as, the godfather of go-go. but this was a guy would came up through the ranks. first lady in the 50s, the 60s, the 70s. played everything, r & b, jazz. back in the day, he had bands. that is what they did. they maid mousse faulk people

to dance to. you had to play everything. whatever the big pop hits were not charts in the '60s. all that kind of stuff. chuck, one of my favorite songs is moody's mood. i want to play a little bit of that for you. if we can hear just a little bit of that. bit of that. he incorporated a little bit of everything. he put out a lot of go-go stuff but he also put out a couple of jazz things. he had everything. there is a great album that he put out called timele which is him doing jazz stuff. for many of us, the first time we ever heard a young singer named eva cassidy was because check brown introduced us to herself they put out an album. i think it is the only album
