news. the news keeps coming. brian bolter with the news edge at 11:00. a virginia man hauled away in handcuffs after allegedly shooting a security guard in downtown d.c. tonight new information on the fbi investigation and a former employee thanks the guard for being a hero, our big story tonight. the shooting happened this morning at a conservative lobbying firm and the police spent the day in a virginia neighborhood looking for evidence, fox 5's bob barnard with the latest. >> that's where the suspect's family lives in herndon. investigators also found the accused gunman's car parked at the east falls church metro station. it's been impounded. late tonight the fbi announced it's charged the shooting suspect floyd corkins with assault with a deadly weapon. for a good chunk of the day the corner of eighth and g streets in the district's chinatown was on virtual lockdown as d.c. police and the fbi investigated a shooting inside the lobby of

the family research council's headquarters. it happened around 10:45 this morning, police telling us an armed manmade negative comments about the organization's work. it opposes gay marriage and abortion rights before opening fire on the security guard. he has been identified as leo johnson. this is a photo of him taken to the hospital. johnson was shot in the arm yet helped others tackle the shooter. >> i would say the security guard is a hero as far as i'm concerned. he did not allow the armed person past the front, so he did his job. >> reporter: the suspected gunman was identified as floyd corkins, ii seen being taken into custody. the fbi is trying to figure out what he intended to do and why. >> we can't confirm any connection at this moment. the family research council is housed in that building and the investigation continues to see what, if any, connection he had with that organization. >> reporter: investigators spent the afternoon interviewing corkins' parents and grandmother at their home

in the kingston shea section of herndon. all the neighbors said they had never seen the couple's oldest of three sons. >> just the gun violence in the last month or so is really, really scary. >> reporter: sources say corkins bought the gun he allegely used this morning last week. not much is known about him except that for the past six months corkins volunteered at the d.c. center for the lesbian, gay and transgender community working the front desk on weekends. the center's executive director posted a statement on the front door saying in part, "we condemn the violence." today the president of the family research council said his organization's first concern is with their colleague who was shot and according to a former co-worker leon johnson was an employee of the frc awarded for his loyalty and dedication to the job. >> we have posted photos from the scene on www.myfoxdc.com and a link to an article by former family research council

employee thanking that security guard for his work. he says, "today at the point of highest reality when a dull desk job called for the vocation of a hero leo showed he had the form of every virtue." to read the full article go to www.myfoxdc.com, click on web links. a gaithersburg man convicted of killing his 12- year-old stepdaughter. he killed the girl to get out of his marriage to her mother. fox 5's audrey barnes has this story now in the newsroom. >> jessica nguyen was a 4' 8 dynamo, a beloved honor student in middle school. relatives found her stabbed to death in her home last may. it took months for police to arrest her stepfather in the case and just hours for a jury to convict him. it was a murder that frightened an entire community. 12-year-old jessica nguyen was found stabbed to death in her family's home. unsolved for four months police finally arrested her stepdad david hang. in a week long trial in

montgomery county prosecutors presented evidence that hang killed jessica because her mother, kim woo, and her relatives wouldn't let him out of their marriage, a sham to help her get u.s. citizenship. >> the family would not agree to let him out of the marriage as quickly as he wanted out and he threatened basically to do whatever he needed to do and threatened revenge on the family. >> reporter: investigators say he exacted his revenge on pint sized jessica stabbing her 43 times with a machete. a knife caked with his dna on it was found beside her tiny body. >> this was clearly premeditated and the victim was a child. we think he should die in jail for this crime. >> reporter: courtroom observers were outraged at hang's demeanor during some of the trial smirking and smiling until the jury came back with its guilty verdict. >> today he was not laughing. today justice was served, not only for the family but the whole community. >> reporter: prosecutors will seek a sentence of life in

prison with no chance of parole. jessica's uncle said it's what they spent the last year hoping for. >> even though it couldn't bring back jess impact here with us, but at least we know that david hang -- jessica back here with us, but at least we know david hang will stay in jail the rest of his life and will not have a chance to hurt community. >> reporter: david hang will be sentenced october 29th. d.c. employees will be getting something extra this month in their paychecks, getting paid back for money lost last fiscal year when they had to take four furlough days. nearly 22,000 workers will get repaid. they issued a statement that said we asked our employees to sacrifice an amount of income in order to help close what was projected to be a budget gap. instead efficient management in government and unanticipated tax revenues gave us a surplus. gray says giving the money back is the right thing to do. a $50,000 reward now offered for information in the 1984 murder of a virginia state

trooper. johnny bowman was off duty when he was stabbed to death in his manassas home 28 years agoful investigators have a dna -- ago. visitors have a dna profile but they need a name to connect with it. >> reporter: johnny bowman information his pajamas when someone rang the bell at his door of his manassas townhouse just after 4 a.m. in 1984. >> the attack was brutal. the trooper was stabbed 40 times in his home within a short period of time. >> reporter: bowman's brother who was in the house heard the commotion and briefly saw the attacker who left behind a hard hat, wig and pair of nonprescription glasses. he described the killer as a black male. investigators say the killer said a few words before launching the assault. >> it was a statement to the effect hi, i'm from the expletive power company and then trooper bowman was immediately attacked. >> reporter: what's never been

sustained is the motive, the fact that haunts the trooper's daughter who spoke with fox 5 back in 2004. >> every night before bed just random times that's all i think about. it's hard looking in the mirror when you look exactly like him. it's been 20 years now and i still don't know who did it. i just want it to be done with. >> reporter: detective elliott works the case every day and if someone came forward with the name he may be able to solve the case. he confirms the dna evidence has already ruled some people out. >> they can always come forward anonymously if they wish, but, of course, we would prefer that they provide their information so we know who we're talking to and dealing with, but yeah, absolutely. there are people out there that have information that will solve this case and we're asking for them to come forward. >> reporter: detective elliott would not say where the dna was recovered, but advancements in technology allow investigators to now routinely obtain dna evidence from anything that
