weather radar and show you where things are right now. it is starting to fill in. we have a little bit of light snow in ts as well if you take alook along the line of northwest d.c. stretching its way over towards ocean city. you can see a little bit of light snow activity going on and all that tching is a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. -- and all that pink is a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. it doesn't help the conditions very much at all. it is still going to be messy and still kind of aggravating for you as you try to get around. but once again, this will continue throughout the course of the morning hours and change into rain in parts of the afternoon. so let's go to our weather maps. we'll show you where we have a winter weather advisory. garrett county is under a winter warning with about an

earlier out in winchester and leesburg, icy conditions reported in manassas for those travel ago long 66. be careful coming in out of haymarket and marshall. traveling inbound and trying to work your way up to the capital beltway. again, southbound 270, not a bad ride so far. my trip in, nice and dry. i noticed a number of salt trucks ready to put out that salt. right now, southbound 270 still in the clear. no issues reported headed out towards rockville. top stretch of the beltway incident-fidel castro as welcoming from new hampshire avenue headed over towards 270. we were getting some mixed reports bay water main break along connecticut avenue. it is there and that is what is

blocking the highway cop -- connecticut avenue to knowles avenue. >> we are expecting to see some icy conditions today and melanie alnwick is live in sterling, virginia with the latest on the situation out there. we saw you getting ready earlier with the umbrella. give us an update on how things are right now. >> it is hard to know whether you need an umbrella or what you will need because it keeps thaipging over. at one point, it looked like the rain was just coming down so hard, it was as if someone was almost spraying a garden hose in front of our camera and now it has changed back over a little bit more to the sleet that is coming down. it just keeps going back and forth. travel right here on route 7 steams to be going just fine at this hour. a surprising number of cars that keep going by here. it really just looks like those roads at this point are wet. but i can tell you that along some of the curbs, the immediate yaps, the grassy areas where the sleet has come

down, it is definitely getting very slick so i would caution people as they head out, perhaps the road might be okay for you if it has been treated at this point but you have to be careful once the stuff really starts to stick on the sidewalks and on the parking lots and any of those paths that you may have to cross by foot. virginia has been updating its weather conditions. you can go on twitter at 511 virginia. fairfax county, loudoun county, still reporting wet road conditions but, as julie has been reporting, in the southern parts of the county, southern and western stafford, fauquier and spotsylvania, they are seeing icy patches at this point. maryland is also letting people know on md 511.

morning hours so we've got freezing rain, we've got sleet and i afew flurries out there in some of our neighborhoods and a little bit of rainfall. >> let's get right to it. we'll show you where things are happening right now. we've got all kind of stuff going on. so you can see that we do have some areas that have a little bit of light snow. just not a lot that is accumulating here at all but if you take a look at this line here, this is all light snow to areas of the east across delmarva. we have this pink which is a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. this is all going to fill in and move toward the east so if you haven't gotten anything yet, it is coming, trust me on that. we'll see into the course of the day, this will start to change into rain. so throughout the course of this morning, it will be a really macey commute for you. do be careful especially on untreated overpasses, bridges as well as sidewalks and some of those roads, it could be

really slick for you. we do have a winter weather advisory in effect. i think i just clicked past it but that income bases the whole entire area until 10:00 this morning and with sleet and freezing rain and then garrett county maryland is under a winter storm warning and about 1 inch of snow anticipated there. 34degrees at reagan national airport. 30 at gaithersburg. 34 for manassas. 3 # at dulles. 3 # at winchester and temperature are going to actually rise into the low 40s into the course of today. but here is some of what you can anticipate. surface temperatures will remain below freezing. sleet and freezing rain as we just showed you. it will become all rain by this afternoon but also into this evening anticipate some fog. so that is going to be another issue with visibility and only minor ice accumulation is associated with this. we are actually dealing with a ridge of high pressure that is pulling out and behind it, we

have the warm front with the low pressure system moving in. that is setting us up for the very active weather. the freezing rain will change to rain by the afternoon hours. the early part expected to be on the wet side before we start to get into mainly just a little bit of a break. not a total washout into the course of the affect. this is one particular model showing us by the time we hit into the 6:00 hour, we are really in the mix of things. the rain is behind t you can see the rain starting to fill in before we get a break into the course of tonight. let's check in now with traffic with julie wright. >> all right. already starting to hear from a lot of folk around the listening and viewing area about the icy conditions that they are encountering. craig said icy conditions for his commute traveling through waldorf so heads up along 301 and 5 trying to make your way out towards brandywine and out to the capital beltway. make sure you have plenty of wiper fluid. not a bad idea to top that off

before you leave home. may need an ice scraper today. we're also hearing of icy conditions out in winchester and leesburg. icy conditions reported down in stafford along 610 and 95. accident reported before you reach quantico. that wreck already pulled to the shoulder. northbound 395 coming across the 14th street bridge. doing the bridge check here because the bridges, ramps and overpasses freeze before anything else. some have been pretreated for you. here we are live at the american legion bridge with traffic continuing to travel with ease. no mention of any problems at this time here but that will change as our morning drive continues on. kenilworth avenue head southbound leaving the d.c. line. you will find the water main break still tying up your

continue out to the potomac crossing. between fairfax and montgomery county, simply dealing with wet pavement at this point. suitland parkway, south capital street headed for the douglass bridge. pennsylvania avenue rolling down the hill towards the sousa bridge, lanes are open and right now without incident. so far, so good. could this be the calm before the storm? yes, very much so. it will be different nurse on a delay and you are traveling out later on this morning. these conditions will continue to change. we are already seeing the change happen for our friends traveling out here in waldorf. icy conditions reported along 301 as you work your way out of la plata. slick conditions reported at hagerstown. and for those traveling in leesburg and winchester and sterling. two accidents northbound 95 before and after quantico already pulled to the shoulder. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. you will want to be extra

cautious when heading out to the morning commute as julie just mentioned. >> people across our region could see snow, sleet, freezing rain. it could create a big mess out there on the roads as you are driving to get around. melanie alnwick is live in sterling, virginia with an update on the road conditions this morning. >> reporter: good morning. it looks like at least for now, it has just turned back to plain old rain at this point but, as we said, it seems like every half hour her or so, we are getting something different coming down hire. right now, it is pretty much just wet. i was checking some of the side surfaces, some of the branches and things. i haven't seen any icing over yet. i haven't seen any eyeing on the power lines so far. people traveling along route 7 seem to be going at a pretty good pace at this point. just wet road conditions here. but virginia's department of transportation definitely was

now, a developing story out of brazil where officials continue to investigate a deadly nightclub fire. witnesses say the fire was sparked by a flare or fireworks set off by a bend member inside the club. officials say one of the exists was locked trapping the victims inside. most of them died from smoke inhalation. last night, we smoke by phone with globo news anchor eduardo grillo who said it is a tragedy for the whole country. >> now, the bad part of t all the families have to recognize the bodies. since it's college town, they were all students from all over the doesn't ri. a lot of families are flying down to santa maria to identify their children. -- from automatic over the country. >> the fire is being called the

deadliest nightclub fire in the world in more than a decade. the mayor of the city has declared a 30-day mourn period. the pentagon blains to boost its cybercourt force in order to combat a flowing threat of hacking. it will increase personnel from 900 to nearly 5,000. the move come after a string of attacks including one that wiped out 30,000 computers at a saudi arabian oil facility. sometimes they are as much fun to watch as the game itself. >> we are getting a taste of this year's super bowl ads. and later, the caps win, finally. dave ross is here with the highlights in this morning's sports breakfast. ♪

because of the weather. let's check in with gwen. >> it will really continue to be widespread. it is continuing to move in across our area. no one will get much of a break from all this precipitation. let's get right to it and show what you is going o here is our fox ask accu-weather. all of this pink is a mixture of freezing rain and sleet. we have a little pocket of rainfall here. this is all going to eventually turn to rain before it is auld said and done. nonetheless, right now, some pretty messy conditions here and your morning commute dim impacted. that is what is going to happen into the course of later on this afternoon as well. we see the rain and we'll have some fog. your evening commute could also be impacted. let's take a look at our weather maps. we have a winter weather advisory for this entire area here because of the sleet and

freezing rain. we also have garrett county, maryland under a winter storm warning expecting about an inch of accumulation of snowfall there. and within this area here, we're talking very, very little in terms of ice accumulation so just be aware of t still roads untreated, bridges, overpasses, sidewalks a little bit on the slick side. 34degrees in d.c. this hour. 32 at baltimore. we have 34 at manassas. 30 at martinsburg. cumberland, 30 degrees. 29 at hagerstown. gaithersburg is at 30 degrees. our high today will be into the low 40s and all up and done the mid-atlantic, temperatures well below the seasonal average. we expect to be into the low 40s into the course of today. that colder air is setting in across areas of the northeast. we will see changes in the midweek. ridge of high pressure moving its way off the coast. we have this low pressure system with an associated warm front pushing in. that is setting us up for what we're dealing with with the freezing rain and sleet and eventually the rainfall.
