and independents across this nation. i say it is time for us to come together as one united people. . i pledge to every citizen of our land that i will be president for all americans and this is so important to me. >> donald trump early this morning to concede the race, she did not speak at the javits center as expected. instead, she spoke around 11:30 to give a heart, fell concession speech and share her feelings about the president elect. >> i know how disappointed you feel because i feel it too. so do tens of millions of americans who invested their

this is painful and it will be for a long time. we must accept the results and look to the future. donald trump is going to be our president. we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead. please never stop believing that fighting for what's right is worth it. about his efforts to have a smooth transition of power. he invited donald trump to the white house to have to begin the transition. republicans want two more years of control in the house, democrats did manage to chip away at the gop's 247 seat majority. take a look at the numbers, democrats held on to 191 seats in the house.

needed to take control. right now, there are still nine undecided seats there. the gop also remain control of the senate. republicans kept the 51 seats needed to remain control. two seats remain undecided. now we turn to the local races, first the closely watched congressional race in virginia. freshman republican barbara comstock was reelected to virginia's 10th district over lou anne bennett with vote. meanwhile in maryland, chris van holland wins maryland's senate seat. and in the district, dc voters approved the statehood referendum with 80% of the vote count. statehood was last on the dc ballot in 1982 when it was approved by a slimmer margin of 53% to 47%, but it is not a done deal. congress still has to approve

dc leaders say they plan to press case to donald trump and the republican congress in january when it comes to statehood. former mayor vincent gray is heading back to the dc city council. he'll represent ward 7. democrat robert white earned a seat on the dc city council with 38% of the vote. to election backlash, a protest broke out on the campus of american university. many students were upset over the results of the election, some got several small american flags, others weren't happy with the way their fellow students were protesting. fox 5 matt ackland is live with the latest on this. matt? >> reporter: some of the students gathered today to protest. a lot of them said listen, we were not happy about the results of last night's election. but when things got tense is when some students decided to start lighting american flags on

at all. it got quite aggressive. i want you to take a look at this picture. this was given by a student who was there to see it all. we're told there were some in the crowd who had served in the military, then they rushed in when they saw the flags being burned. they didn't like that at all. following that, students remained in the center of campus. chanting antitrump words and debating a few students wearing make america great >> that's when some of the students from the black lives matter group pulled out american flags and started lighting them on fire, my dad is in the military. as upset zoom about the results and the election, the image of the flag burning brought me to tears. >> reporter: so many showing passion, displeasure, frustration. one african-american student stood at the top of the stairs today and said, i don't feel safe in this country.

those wind may gust up to over 20 miles an hour, just a breeze. 65 friday. mild day and that's good news because friday is also veterans day, i'll show you that forecast in a moment in a little bit more detail. meanwhile tonight as we head now down through the low 50's, we're going to go see those temperatures dropping off into the 30's and 40's later tonight. and a noticeable breeze out of the north and northwest, right now about ten to 15 miles an hour, but that could get a little bit stronger during the day tomorrow. overnight, we head for the 40's maybe a couple of 30's like we see here foreman manassas. noticeably chilly at the bus stop tomorrow morning, 38 to 47 degrees. and if you're driving to work, grab your sunglasses. after school, 57 to 63 for kids at the bus stop, so not coyote as chilly but the breeze will make it feel a little cooler than that 62 degrees. we're at forecastly 59 for the high temperature in

high pressure dominating the weather so it's dry and again we mentioned thursday we'll be on the breezy side. for veterans day, maybe some of you have the day off. it is friday. we'll have a lot of sunshine, a bit warmer day at 65 degrees. but even on friday, we'll notice the breeze around from time to time. by the weekend, another big area of high pressure builds in, this got some behind it and it will kick you want breezes friday into saturday as this front comes on of cold air but the coldest air we've seen so far this season and can't to say that as we go through the winter. that means for saturday, especially, our daytime highs only in the 40's and 50's. at night. 20's and 30s. the other night i stepped outside to head on home from fox 5 and i did notice for the first time i kind of think i want to make sure i know where my gloves are. i think that's a good thing to keep in mind. saturday is chilly. 52 in the city. 40's in the suburbs, warmer on sunday. 61 degrees.
