roads. crash clearing but still causing delays on the inner loop in virginia plus a closure on 210 in maryland that's still out there. details still ahead. maureen. >> thank you both of you. 5 o'clock right now. starting with developing news out of adams morgan. two police officers and a dpw traffic patrol aide struck during a hit-and-run. >> this morning the suspected driver is in custody and we confirmed that a weapon was in the trunk of the vehicle. melanie alnwick live from the scene with the latest. mel. >> reporter: hey, guys, they've already removed the pickup truck but there's still some debris here on the road. but i also want you to look -- eugene come down here. you can see the orange lines. this is the path that the truck took basically before it crashed into that large truck there and it's also the path here where the officers were struck. now, if you turned around here, eugene, you can see where the police car

just where the mcdonald's is, that's where the two bike officers were and the traffic control officer. that's where they were standing, apparently just back there, there was a car that was stopped and then a metrobus behind it. the white pickup truck apparently was behind that stoppage area, there was a police officer on a bike in front of the car and we are told by sources that the white pickup truck then decided for some reason to careen -- to like speed around the metrobus and the car and that is how they ended up striking the officer, possibly dragging one of them. we talked to some witnesses on the scene. also want to show you some video here of the fbi that was on the scene late last night. we've asked d.c. police chief peter newsham if terrorism could be involved in this. he's basically said that's something that needs to be looked at, they're not confirming any motive at this point. we also talked to some witnesses on the scene hoop said everything happened very,

very fast. >> you know, screaming and then followed by a.m. tire squealing sound and then i saw a white truck just spedding, you know, at a very high speed towards my direction and then i saw it struck right into the -- what appears to be a dumpster truck. >> reporter: and then again here you see that dumpster truck. we also want to show you some video. a lot of people here 9 o'clock on a thursday night in adams morgan is a really busy time. lots of people around, a lot of mobile phones as well. we got individual grow a eyewitness with a pretty high vantage point where you can see the driver of that pickup truck being taken out, taken away and witnesses also told us they saw the passenger bail out of the window of his side of the vehicle and basically saying he doesn't know what happened, that the driver just went crazy all of a sudden. also, a little bit of news on the officers this morning. we can

the officers, the one who is in very critical condition is out of surgery. it looks like things at this point are stable but he's still in critical condition. the other two who were injured are recovering, serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. the driver and the passenger of the white pickup truck remain under arrest. live in adams morgan, i'm melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> all right, mel, thank you for that. 5:04 is the time. former fbi director james comey accusing president trump and his staff of lying about why he was fired. that was just one of his revelations made during the testimony yesterday. he also revealed details of a private oval office meeting in which the president said he hoped investigators would go easy on mike flynn. that was the national security adviser who had resigned just the day before that meeting amid allegations he misled the vice president about contact he had with a russian government official. >> i took it as a direction. i mean, he's the president of the united states with me alone saying i hope

took it as this is what he wants me to do. >> comey also admitted that he passed along information to a friend he knew would leak it to the press in order to provoke the justice department to appoint special counsel. >> house republicans approved legislation which seeks to dismantle banking regulations. financial choice act is meant to replace the dodd frank wall street reform act. the new legislation includes less stringent liquidities requirements for banks the elimination of bank bans on risky investments, the weakening of the consumer financial protection bureau and the repeal of a requirement that financial advisers helping clients with retirement accounts act in the client's best interest. critics say it goes too far. >> the number of alcohol and drug related deaths in maryland last year was the largest ever recorded in the state. yesterday officials said over 2000 people died because of overdoses in 2016. it is an increase of 66 percent from the previous year. heroin

use surged among all age and racial groups. >> time is 5:05. the transit agency board voted to get behind the general manager's funding plan. regional deliberations heat up over establishing a dedicated funding source for the transit system but not everybody is on board with this. there was one dissenting vote from the board member from prince george's county. in april, paul wiedefeld called on state and local lawmakers to provide $500 million every year for metro's long term maintenance while opening some future services to revitalization. >> ♪ >> 5:06 is the time. mike thomas checking in with you for our forecast. what's on tap. >> yeah, little cool temperatures to start the morning here but as we work our way into the afternoon lots of sunshine and we'll kind of quickly warm it up this afternoon as we transition from what was a springlike last couple days to a summer-like weekend ahead h60 degrees your current number in d.c., gaithersburg cool

baltimore as well. good morning, leonardtown, 54 for you. fredericksburg 55 degrees at this hour. satellite and radar showing maybe actually one or two light sprinkles west of town but that's about all that's going on and those will not last long. we should have a good amount of sunshine later on today. 84 degrees your daytime high this afternoon, a few passing clouds from time to time. temperatures will be on the rise, though, no the just today but tomorrow up near 90 and then mid 90's coming our way as we start next week. full details on that upcoming forecast in just a couple of minutes. all right, that's the weather. over to caitlin now for traffic. >> on-time traffic brought to you by toyota. visit buy a toyota.com for special offers. >> 5:07 right now on this friday morning. a crash site behind me on the inner loop in virginia approaching falls church. this is right before route 50 where we had an overturned vehicle although emergency crews have been scene for the past half hour and have been clearing pretty quickly. you can see traffic squeezing by on the left most lane although it does look like the other three lanes are

however, the express lanes are now free and opened. earlier they were cleared so you can get around it but delays are building on the inner loop approaching route 50. route 50 by the way that's the on-ramp on the right most hand side of your screen, that is still fine. you can get from route 50 onto the beltway. so, that is in the clearing stages but we do have delays as we go to maps building on the inner loop approaching route 50. they're already out there, they continue to build back to annandale. southern maryland we've been following this closure all morning 210 northbound and southbound closed at palmer road. this is due to a crash and so you're going to have to follow local detours to get around this from fort washington headed up towards oxon hill you'll encounter in closure on 210. try to use some alternates around that. that's a look at traffic. more coming up at 5:15p maureen. >> all right indicate tin. coming up, a murder indictment handed down in a deadly [inaudible] >> u.s. men's soccer team scores two goals to automatically qualify for the next world cup. >> heading to break. let's take a live loo

the conservatives were projected to win 314 of the 650 seats in parliament. this will mean prime minister theresa may needs to team up with smaller parties to form a coalition government. >> an autopsy has revealed thjohn hernandez died after being beaten and restrained by the husband of a county deputy. it happened outside of a denny's in houston. video surfaced of the incident and the victim's lawyer says it shows that he was murder. >> a day many people have been waiting for. first lady melania trump and the son barron set to move into the white house next wednesday. the first lady had delayed the move until now so barron could stay in new york and finish out the school year. >> u.s. soccer taking on trinidad and

>> ♪ 5:13. let's take a look at the stories we're following for you today, friday june 9th. several people are in the hospital including two police officers and a dpw traffic patrol aide after an apparent hit-and-run in adams morgan. two people have been arrested including the driver. d.c. police chief peter newsham says police found weapons inside the car. they are investigating the incident. >> former fbi director james comey accusing president trump and his staff of lying about why he was fired one of many revelations made yesterday. comey revealed details of a private oval office meeting in which the president said he hoped investigators would go easy on mike flynn. the national security adviser had resigned the day before amid allegations he misled the vice president about contact he had with a russian government official. >> jurors in the bill cosby sex assault trial got to hear from the entertainer even though he wasn't on the stand. a detective

temperatures headed into the 80's later on this afternoon. today's actually the first day where you're going to start to notice temperatures are going to be on the rise again not just today but through the weekend heading for what will be our hottest stretch of weather so far this year. temperatures right now, though, pleasantly cool outside. 60 here in washington but 52 in gaithersburg, 54 dulles, 55 for frederick. 52 in martinsburg, 55 at winchester as well as fredericksburg. leonardtown 54 degrees as we start our day. one little lone area of showery drizzle kind of out there around the front royal area. small area falling apart a bit and not expected to make it close to d.c. but be aware of that as you're making up this morning around front royal. other than that it's pretty quiet around the region. one area avenue cloud cover came through early this morning and then whose arm is that? tucker barnes everybody. all right, again, it's pretty quiet out here. temperatures later on today, 84 here in washington, 82 manassas as well as dulles and quantico. how about that weekend? high pressure will that sink tou

coming into the picture, in fact right around 90 trees 90 degreesand saturday well up r it. mid 90's expected. ocean city maryland forecast not 90's for them but warm enough, 83 on saturday afternoon, sunday 86 degrees. lots of sunshine. it will be a beautiful weekend for the beach but those water temperatures still chilly, only in the mid 60's. fox5 accuweather 7-day forecast, 84 today. then 90's take over. 90 on saturday, 94 sunday. 96 on monday and tuesday. that heat index on monday and tuesday expected to be above 100 degrees. all right, that's a check of the forecast. caitlin is walking in now with a check of traffic. >> i'm going to miss mornings like this, mike, next week and then for the rest of the summer probably. so comfortable out there right now. still following this inner loop crash in virginia approaching route 50 arlington boulevard. originally we had all the express lanes closed. they have since reopened but just the left lane of regular traffic squeezing by. and the three other lanes are blocked on the right hand sized your screen that you can see right

50 on-ramp getting on as well. approaching falls church you've got heavy delays at least back to the little river turnpike at this point. to our maps we go. we've got some other slowdowns, just checking some drive times for you this morning. so far so good on 66, prince william parkway to the capital beltway your normal 20 minutes. delay free on 95 in virginia dale steel to the beltway. on 395 from the beltway to the 14th street bridge once you get inside the beltway through arlington, 10 minutes on that stretch and in virginia 123 to the 14th street bridge you're looking at nine minutes there. so, no problems on these interstates in virginia. again watch out for the inner loop in falls church approaching route 50, you got heavy delays there. that's a look at traffic. maureen, back to you. >> okay, thank you, caitlin. 5:18 is the time. let's take a look at the stories you're engaging with the most this morning on and social media with our rea real news tracker. >> social went wild when that senator john mccain started asking him questions. he spent most of the time asking

investigation into hillary clinton's use of a private e-mail server when she was secretary of state but his questions were kind of confusing. comey himself even said that he was confused. mccain said lack of sleep caused him to mess up his line of questioning. he said he stayed up late the night before to watch the arizona diamondbacks play. >> now to the healthcare debate. senate republican leaders are now considering keeping parts of obamacare that they had threatened to kill. many say they are in favor of keeping guaranteed protections for people with preexisting medical conditions. >> the cdc released a new report that lace out the risk for zika related birth defects for each trimester of pregnancy. researchers found that during the first trimester nearly one in 12 women who had zika had a baby or fetus with zika related birth defects. infections in the second trimester 5 percent were affected and in the third trimester 4 percent. >> japan allowed

>> welcome back. 5:23. double recall involving automaker hyundai. the first one covers santa fe and santa fe sport suv's from 2013 through 2017. there are problems with the hood latches. the second recall covers some genesis and sonata models from 2015 through 2016 and some of those vehicles are having problems with their parking brake lights. the total recall impacts nearly 600,000 vehicles in the united states. >> yahoo shareholders approved the company's sale to verizon. verizon is preparing to combine yahoo and aol planning also to down size the companies by 15 percent which about 2100 jobs will be cut as a result of the the final vote comes about a year after the acquisition was first announced. the deal is

morning. inner loop crash in virginia approaching falls church at route 50. not impacting route 50. however very heavy delays behind that crash which involved a flipped vehicle. better look at the scene right now. emergency crews have been out there for some time right now. there's the vehicle that's flipped onto its side taking up the three right most lanes. level squeezing by. express lanes are opened and as we go to maps, there have been some heavy delays as a result of that backup. now, we've also just got a crash that came in on the outer loop in maryland. right lane blocked at baltimore-washington parkway. so that is no doubt going to continue to build some delays right there. also following this all morning, in maryland, route 210 indian head highway, you've got a closure still out there at palmer road northbound and southbound due to an earlier crash with police investigating the scene so that remains closed. follow local detours around there. checking 270 out of frederick county light volume that will take you down to the beltway. not seeing

appears to be a dumpster truck. >> police say gun was recovered from the striking vehicle, the suspected driver is in police custody along with the passenger who was in the truck. >> two suspects are in custody in connection with a stabbing spree in silver spring. skyfox flew over the scene near a bus stop in the 8600 block of piney branch road. now the two teens suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. no word on the condition of the other victims. >> ♪ >> no tweets, no statements, nothing so far from president donald trump directly after former fbi director james comey's testimony. >> but he is getting his message out in other ways. fox5's annie yu joins us now to explain. annie. >> reporter: that's right, wisdom and maureen, president trump staying off his phone and letting his personal attorney do all the talking as former fbi director james comey told his side of the story before the senate intelligence committee. and hours of testimony james comey under oath accuses the president and his staff of lying about the

his firing less than a month ago. comey also revealed his deep distrust for the president saying he kept memos of their conversations a move he said he did not do with other prior presidents or other top justice department officials. he told the committee president trump himself personally under investigation in the fbi russia probe and went on record about a private oval office meeting in which the president told comey that he "hoped investigators would go easy on former national security adviser michael flynn." president trump's personal lawyer marc kasowitz responded. >> has confirmed publically what he repeatedly told president trump privately, was not under investigation as part of any probe into russian interference. the president never in form or substance directed or suggested that mr. comey stop

it's friday. aall right, it has been a busy friday morning on the roads so far. skyfox over the scene of what is a closure on route 210 in maryland. we've been talking about this all morning long. obviously you don't see many cars because this part of 210 at palmer road is closed in both directions. police have been on the scene of this crash site that from what i can tell has been mostly cleared away although there is an investigation ongoing and it looks like it will be closed until further notice. we'll continue to have skyfox overhead. but if you are coming out of fort washington in southern prince george's county, maybe headed to oxon hill, headed to the beltway, you cannot access 210 so follow the local detours around there or if you know a better alternate to get you to the beltway because you cannot use two then either direction. i guess that's the same thing to be said as we go to cameras for coming in the other direction. all right, cameras still inner loop in virginia at falls church following this crash site with an overturned vehicle and a dump truck which seems to be trying to clear out all the debris from the overturned vehicle. a really messy scene blocking the

although looks to me right there that w have two lanes moving by on the left side so maybe two lanes of traffic squeezing by but very heavy delays as a result of this on the inner loop approaching route 50 right around falls church you've got delays that are probably all the way back to the little river turnpike at this point. it's been a busy morning and will that continue on the outer loop in maryland. another crash that also involves an overturned vehicle. and you've got delays on the inner loop here in maryland from the baltimore-washington parkway where the crash is. looks like all the way back to route 50, very heavy traffic there. there's that inner loop crash and you've got delays on the inner loop in virginia there almost all the way back down through annandale so very heavy. and following that closure again at 210 you can see that will right there in southern prince george's county checking 270 if you're coming out of montgomery county or frederick county through montgomery county, you've got light volume 70 all the way to the spur so that's one spot where we're doing okay here early this morning. all right, that's a look at traffic. wisdom, back over to you. >> thank you, caitlin. 5:49 is the time right now. the state of virginia trying to eliminate its backlog

for his life. now the search for a motive. >> also breaking right now, a serious crash on indian head highway in maryland. this is near palmer road. all lanes are currently blocked. >> and we're told this involved two vehicles, six people taken to the hospital. good morning to you, i'm allison seymour. >> and i'm wisdom martin in for steve chenevey. we're going get right to caitlin roth with the very latest on the accident we were talking about. >> good morning, wisdom and allison. 210 just reopening literally as you were speaking. it always happens like that. as we take a look at skyfox here's 210 in southern maryland, there's palmer road the intersection in which traffic is now allowed to move on the northbound side of 210 right now so it looks like the crash has been cleared. traffic is now moving freely after a significant delay on the northbound side of 210 at palmer road. this is in the oxon hill area. so o-it looks like we're still waiting on the southbound side to reopen as we go up another intersection you can still see there are police vehicles blockin access to 210 there. but at least everything is moving on one side and i suspect that the southbound side should reopen shortly.
