7:02 am
>> this got heated. we'll have more on the debate but our top story is the shooting rampage in kansas. we know the identity of the alleged shooter who opened fire on co-workers before he was shot and killed by police. blake mccoy is at the scene of the shooting. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. four people dead here, including the gunman. 14 others injured. many of them apparently his co-workers co-workers. one police officer is being hailed a hero cop this morning. all of this comes as another community struggles to understand. >> reporter: this is video of cedric larry ford, posted on his facebook page. in his late 30s, allegedly went on a shootingampage at the excel factories. he is seen firing what appears to be an assault rifle. so far, police have not revealed a motive. >> pop, pop, pop.
7:03 am
i thought he was going to shoot me. >> reporter: police confirmed the shooter was an employee at the factory, which makes rideing mowers and lawn care equipment. the suspect had a long gun, possibly an assault rifle, as well as a pistol and appeared to be shooting at random. eyewitnesss stopped to help the wounded. >> he gothot twice in the chest, one in the arm and once in the leg. >> reporter: anxious relatives rushed to the scene. >> my daughter works second shift, along with her boyfriend, and my niece. >> reporter: the rampage started about an hour earlier, less than ten milil away. shortly before 5:00 p.m., police say the gunman drove through the south central town of newton, opening fire on two cars and injuring one person. from there, people say the suspect drove eight miles where he stole a car and injured another person.
7:04 am
the excel facto in hesston, shooting one person before goes inside and shooting many more. >> he had no specific target. he was shooting anyone that got in his way. >> reporter: ahorities say the guguan was still shooting when the first officer arrived and was able to take him down, saving many lives. >> everybody says it can't happen here, but it's all those places that it happens at. here we are, it happened here. >> we haveearned that ford, the accused shooter, does have a lengthy criminal record dating back to the '90s in broward county, florida, where he used to live. this doesn't appear to be terror related and the motive is under investigation. >> blake mccoy on this story in kansas. thank you very much. we move to the presidential race and the republican debate last night. marco rubio and ted cruz laying into the front runner donald trump, trying to slow his momentum as we head into super tuesday.
7:05 am
we have complete covage and we'll talk to senator rubio in a moment. let's begin with national correspondent peter alexander. good morning. >> good morning to you. after three straight double digit vaktry ryvictories for donald trump, cruz and rubio finally ganged up on him. the fight felt much more like a brawl. >> reporter: at the lone star state standoff, marco rubio let loose. >> you're the only person on the stage that's ever been fined for hiring people to work on your projects illegally. >> i'm the only one on the stage that's hired people. you haven't hired anybody. >> if he builds the wall he built trump towers, he'll u u illegal immigrants to do it. >> reporter: rubio skillfully and playfully mocked donald trump. now he's repeated himself. >> no, i'm not. no, no, no. i watched him repeat himself five times four weeks ago. >> i saw you repeat yourself
7:06 am
everybyby is dumb, we're going to win, win, win. >> senator rubio, p pase -- >> every night, same thing. >> reporter: one of the best lines of f e night? rubio questioning trump's success story. >> if he hadn't inherited $200 million, you know where he'd be? selling watches and hats. >> reporter: the rubio campaign trying to gain momentum online, with this watch. for ted cruz, he also teamed up on trump. >> in 2013, when i was leading the fight against the gang of eight amnesty bill, where was donald? firing dennis rodman on "celebrity apprentice." >> reporter: trump defending and deliberating counterpunches. >> i got along with everybody. you get along with nobody. yourself. i had an amazing relationship with politicians. this guy is a joke artist and this guy is a liar. >> reporter: the billionaire
7:07 am
president. >> i'm not going to pay for that [ bleep ] wall. he should pay for it. he's got the money. >> reporter: asked how he'd get mexico to pay? >> i will and the wall got ten feet taller, believe me. if i would have used even half of that word, it would have been national scandal. >> reporter: at times, the debate moved into a debacle. >> donald, relax. >> you need to relax. you're the basket case. >> reporter: ben carson left off camera begged to be heard. >> can somebody please attack me? >> last night, cruz and rubio promised to release their tax returns today or tomorrow, putting pressure o donald trump to do the same. trump blamed the irs for his delay, saying two to three years worth of his returns are currently being audited. matt and savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you. senator marco rubio is with us now.
7:08 am
>> good morning. >> i'm reading a lot of the reviews this morning. a lot of people think you had a very strong pmpserformance last night. you hit donald trump on a string of substative issues. obamacare, hiring practices, planned parenthood, the vacancy at the supreme court. was this the plan all along, to string together this kind of substantive attacks at the 11th hour to leave this fresh in the minds of voters on super tuesday? >> the thing here is i prefer not to have a fight and argument with other republicans but donald has done well in the early states. we're on the verge of having someone take over who is a con artist. he's telling people he's fighting. his target audience is working americans who are really struggling in this economy. he's spent a career sticking it to working americans.
7:09 am
you don't want to criticize other republicans. you said that over and over again. but was it the strategy to wait till the last minute so it's fresh in the minds of voters on tuesday? >> no. that was when the debate was. number two, as he reminds people over and over, he says he's doing well in the polls. i'm the underdog. i ask people to join us at marco rubio.com so we can stop the lunn ka lunacacy. he's going tostuck it to working americans and now claims to be their champion. >> the taxes of donald trump. you and senator cruz say you'll coming days. donald trump says he can't because he's been audited. he has been for the last several years. is that a sufficient reason not to release at least part of his tax records? >> first of all, we're release ours.
7:10 am
a financial disclosure with the senate every year. there's no difference between the disclosures and the taxes. enough. ted cruz had a good point last night. we need to sesethe returns to see if the difference between the audited version and what he filed are evidence of wrongdoing. i think the reason why donald won't release is taxes is he hasn't made nearly as much money he claims he does. he's taken trump airlines, mortgage, disaster. trump university was a fraud. he's not as rich as he claims to be. everybody in finance knows that and his taxes would expose that. he came up with the excuse ofn audit. >> after the debate, he said the reason he's audited is he's too strong of a christian. dodoou think that might be a factor? >> i meanan this is unreal. again, this guy is a con ararst. he's always making things up and no one holds him accountable for it. you have a guy who is being sued
7:11 am
i've had stories written about my drivingng record. we had red light camera tickets. i have some guy go back and write a story about how when i was 18, i got arrested -- or citetefor drinking beer in a park after hours. he's being sued for fraud,d, for defrauding people. he had to pay a judgment for hiringng polish workers illegally to build trump towers. he's being treated with kid gloves by many in the media. in the hopes he's the nominee. some are bias. they'd love to see a liberal like donald trump take over the republican papay. others know he's easy to beat once he gets there. hillary clinton would take him apart. >> tuesday is hugely important for u. you need a win. you need delegates. one of yououcampaign spokespersons said you would win florida. you are behind right now in the state by double digits. will you guarantee that you'll win the state of florora? >> we're not behind by double
7:12 am
the polls you're citing is wrong. not only do we have our own numbers but i know my state. we'll win florida and do well on super tuesday. it's up to the people watching this. that's why i'm on this broadcast. if you want to stop this man, donald trump, this con artist, from taking over the conservative movement, g g on marco rubio.com, sign up and help usus we'll put an end to it. we can't turn over the reagan volution to someone who spent a career sticking it to working people and now claims to be their champion. >> mar rubio picking up where he left off last night. thank you for your time. >> thank you. let's bring in nicolle wallace and mark, managing editor for bloomberg politics. mark, y were at the debate last night. the old saying, throwing everything but the kitchen sink. in this case, i think the sink was included. marco rubio dumping it on trump from the fake university to the hiring of the illegal workers to the fraud lawsuit. it was all in there.
7:13 am
morning is, was it enough? was it too late? >> kitchen sink, bathtub and everything else in his arnal. this morning with you guys, he talked about trump is a con artist. it was more of a focused message than last nighthere he tried lots of things. it's interesting to think about someone, inclung marco rubio, had had a performance like this against trump two or three months ago, whether the trajectory would be different. we're a few days away from super tuesday. donald trump is leading in all the states voting in super tuesday by a substantial margin, except texas. i think marco rubio probably waited too long to put this performance? >> i don't think there i any doubt this was marco rubio's best performance in a debate. was it donald trump's worst? >> it doesn't matter. he always crummy and it never seems to matter. what i think is interesting is -- so chris christie did to marco rubio what marco rubio did to donald trump. the effect of that was incredible damage to marco
7:14 am
chris christie was out, i think, less than a week later. what was interesting to me is did marco rubio and chris christie make it easier for ted cruz to win texas? this indictment of trump on his business dealings was always trump's achilles heel. the mystery in republican circles is why didn't anyone make this case before? >> talking about the effect of this, mark, does this buy marco rubio time? do you think the donors, the loyalists andeople waiting on the sidelines, wondering if marco rubio had it to go the distance, are they off the sidelines and is he going to get an influx of support and cash? >> some people will say, we'd love to see a one on one debate between marco rubio and donald trump. the problem is, super tuesday, when so many delegates are at stake with so many voting on tuesday, it doesn't look like
7:15 am
while he says he can win florida, and the public polling doesn't suggest he can, it's hard to see hlw he survives to florida in a couple weeks if he doesn't win a single state on super tuesday or between super tuesday and when florida ves on the 1 1th. he's in a stronger position with a strong debate performance but it's tough to see how it translates into winning states in the short term. >> all right. this was fascinating. thank you very much. good to see you guys this morning. meanwhile, former republican candidate senator lindsey graham hasn't been shy about attacking donald trump or the shenanigans of this campaign season. he took things to a new livel at last night. take a look. crazy. if you kill ted cruz on the floor of the senate and the trial was in the senate, nobody could convict you. i ran for president.
7:16 am
i endorsed jeb bush. he had to get out. and the doctor kavorkian of the republican primary. tonight -- i endorse donald trump and hope magic still exists. >> did he sum it up well? >> he did. what is interesting is this party has its hair on fire about donald trump. marco rubio is the only one with a hope of bepnefitting from all these attacks. i@think republicans are wonding, where was this outcry? where was this hysteria? donald trump has been doing well for a very long time. marco rubio is now satisfying and acceptable to a broad swath of all of the kind of republicans who laugh at those jokes.
7:17 am
displayed last night six, seven, two months ago, when it really cod have put marco rubio in the stop top position of the polls? >> it's not like the lines of attack were in the bushes. >> trump's business dealis are known around new york and in business communities. they're finly being put out in an aggressive way. it's satisfying to a lot of people who wondered why they weren't earlier. i agree with mark's analysis. i'm just not sure if there is time. >> thynk you. >> thank you very much. let's turn to al. he's on the road this morning. lucky guy, miami beach. looks beautiful. al, good morning. >> it is gorgeous. 56 degrees, which we would love in new york city. feels a little cool here, little breezy. we'r not complaining. it's the 15th annual south beach food and wine festival here in south beach. in the meantime, let's show you what we have going on right now around the country. again, theood news is, things have calmed do for the most part. we'll seeing action in the
