so we have to watch out for showers. we're sitting at 80 degrees in tampa. southeast wind at five and projecting rain chances today around 60% with highs going back to the upper 80s. >>vanessa: thanks, dave. if you're just joining us, we have a crash carrying over lane blockages from the last hour affecting the upper deck of the selmon expressway. we're not seeing any major delays on the road sensors but as a safety concern, make sure you're using caution, keepi eye out for troopers or tow trucks you see on site here. >>walter: 6:01. tampa police are looking for a missing 12-year-old. he disappeared last night around 10:00 after getting in an argument with his mother. he's known to hang out in the belmont heights area. tampa police.n him, please call- >>laura: and developing this morning, a motorcyclist is recovering after he was shot in an apparent case of road rage. it happened last night at the

earlier than usual. time is running out to stock up on supplies. but parents, we're in luck. this year's tax-free holiday starts today. fox 13 shayla reaves is live for us at staples on west spruce street. holiday a little shorter than usual but that's all right. we can still save, right? >>reporter: yes. any parents out there, laura, looking to save a little bit of cash as they get their kids ready to start another school year, this is the weekend to do as you mentioned, it is shorter. if you recall last year, the holiday was more than a week. it was about eight to 10 days is what parents had available to take advantage and i want to talk a little bit about some changes you'll see if you plan to shop and pick up extra items. the traditional school supplies we're talking about the pens, the note pads, the things of that nature, some of your calculateors are still included

item or less. so when it comes to electronic items, as far as your computers and things of that nature, if you waited to buy those items for the tax-free holiday weekend, you are out of luck. this year there's no exemption on electronic items so last year where you were able to get your computer and not have to pay tax on the first 750, that's not the case this year. if you're a student and you may need graphing calculators, those are not included this year and other items that are not included include staples, staplers and even your multi purpose computer paper. that's not included as well. these are just some examples you'll see as you make your way out and prepare to wrap up your back to school shopping. i do want to mention when it comes to things like backpacks, they fall into that category. back
6:05 am
but this is different from last year where you had up to $100 per item when it came to clothing. this year it's about $40 less. those are some changes you need to know as you make your way out and prepare to take advantage of deals and savings. we know there are stores right here in the area, including the one where i'm standing, the staples location that are making some changes to try to make that shopping experience easier for folks that are looking to save time, get what they just get ready for the year. we're told they're expanding some options online so you can shop online, pick it up in the store, some of the items are moved closer to the front of the store with some different labelling options available to make it visually a little more accessible for folks as they make their way into the door and try to get those items on their book to school list. we're going to be here throughout the morning, keeping you posted on the details you need to know as you head out and prepare to wrap up your back to
6:06 am
of course, this is august 5 through august 7, 11:59 sunday is the last time you can do this this year and we'll keep you posted on all the details and i'll see you again at 7:00. >>laura: thank you. >>walter: and on monday, "good day" will be hosting a supply drive to period of time hillsborough and pinellas county schools. dropoff points at two locations, right here at fox 13 studios on ke center on belcher road in clearwater. if you're wondering what is needed, head to our website, fox13news.com. >>laura: george zimmerman is back in the headlines. he was punched in the face for discussing the trayvon martin case at a restaurant. this happened last weekend. according to a report from the seminole county sheriff's office, he was telling a group of people that he shot the teen in self defense. a man approached him and asked if he was bragging and zimmerman
6:07 am
then deputies say the man used several racial slurs, told zimmerman to leave and then punched him. that's when zimmerman called 911. >> what's going on there? >> a man punched me in the face z. is he still there? >> yep. he said he's going to kill me. >> does he have any weapons? >> he said it like three or four times. >>laura: the man took off on a motorcycle. if he's caught, he could face assault and battery charges and deputies questioned different versions of the story. the owner of the restaurant said there was an argument. he said that zimmerman is no longer welcome at the restaurant. >>walter: miami therapist is suing a police officer who shot him while he tried to protect a man with autism. charles kinsey accuses the officer of using excessive force. this incident was caught on camera last month.
6:08 am
the officer thought the man next to him had a gun which was actually a toy truck. kinsey is seeking unspecified damages. >>laura: the head of the cdc says that area spraying is quickly killing mosquitos at the center of the outbreak. they started using a new chemical yesterday. it's banned in puerto rico right now because of environmental concerns but it's mosquitos that pesticides on the ground cannot. they're only using small amounts at dusk and dawn so there should be no effect on people. governor scott is confident the response is working. >> we have good news. one mile radius, we can take 10 blocks in the northwest corner and say we don't believe there's any active transmission of zika so from the state health department standpoint, we're very comfortable that we are not seeing any active cases there.
6:09 am
governor announced free zika testing for pregnant women. that began yesterday. it can take from two days to a week to come back with results. >>walter: hillary clinton is leading donald trump among florida voters. she's up six points in a head to head matchup. clinton also leads by a four point margin when the green party and libertarian candidates are factored in. marco rubio leads and allen grayson in head to head matchups. he needs to win his own primary. that's august 30. >>laura: some big changes are happening at tampa international. >>walter: big, big. big. at 6:30, alcides segui will give us a new look at some of the new additions. plus -- thankfully jennifer epstein is taking us shopping to show us what's in style for the younger crowd this school year.

>>dave: starting to see light here. beautiful, nice start to the day in tampa. toward the coastline, though, we're beginning to pop up those pesky, annoying showers and with the onshore wind flow that we have, it's only going to be a matter of time before all coastal counties get involved with this so i zoom in because right around the longboat key area, we had a couple of tropical downpours. i'm not noticing a lot of lightning with this so it's rain
6:14 am
deals and then it's done. but of course, that can definitely interfere with your morning commute. anna maria has light rain. it looks like a heavier shower that moved over the sunshine skyway is beginning to weaken. as they go further north, up around cedar key, which has had a fair share of rain the last week or so, this thunderstorm and this actually has some lightning in there as well, is slowly sneaking southeastward. it's not in citrus county yet but it is close and then what happens as you go more showers ahead of that popping up. so coastal areas, we've got a setup very similar to yesterday where as soon as we start to bubble up and warm things up, look at the showers. just out of nowhere they're popping over the gulf and the rain chances will be highest this morning if you're west of i-75 and then like yesterday, i know parts of polk county had a few hours of rain yesterday in the afternoon. everything will shift inland.
6:15 am
we experienced and lots and lots of tropical moisture sitting in place. and i don't think this is going to change and if anything, we're going to get more rain over the next several days because watch what happens. you're going to have a trough of low pressure, basically an elongated area of low pressure develop here and hang out over the northeastern gulf. not a great place to hang out because what that does is it pumps in amounts of moisture with the southwest wind and in turn, really starts to bring up the rainfall amounts. again, one computer model and i'm going through next tuesday night but that's a lot of rain. okay? now, this is obviously subject to change if more of the focus, if more of the energy goes northwest but this just gives you an idea, four, five, six inches of rain. wouldn't surprise me between now
6:16 am
everybody to realize, check back in each morning and let's see the progression of the weather pattern but i can tell you between now and next wednesday, it's going to be very wet. whether you get two inches of rain or four inches of rain or more, everybody is going to get some rain. 88 degrees for a high today. coastal showers and storms during the morning move inland. warm, very sultry overnight tonight and once the sun comes up tomorrow, the showers will start once again along the immediate coastline and then they'll move inland during afternoon hours tomorrow. honestly, boaters, it's going to be a tough weekend to do the boating. each day probably late in the day is the best time. the mornings, you will have light to moderate chop dealing with the coastal showers. next seven days, we'll pump the rain chances up, at least 70% for saturday, for sunday, for monday and no, not individual washout days but just good chances of rain each and every
6:17 am
okay? >>vanessa: thank you. we are hearin from pasco county sheriff's office that drivers should steer clear of u.s. 41 and bowman road. this is going to be north of -- towards the north end of pasco county, just south of county line road. they're just calling it an investigation into an incident. they haven't specified whether it's traffic related but i am seeing indications of traffic being stopped. about, i would say, a couple of in road. so it's definitely an area that you'll want to steer clear of because you'll probably be sitting there for awhile. we're not sure what it is. we'll let you know what we find out. here is the suncoast parkway. there's also, from what i can tell, a no name road. there's no names on the map system but it's just to the east. that's another option for you. so we'll keep you posted on the late west that. in the meantime, we'll send it over to you at the desk.

veterans. anyone with information is asked to call the tampa police. >>walter: the fund created for the pulse nightclub shooting is up to $23 million. yesterday more than 300 family members and survivors met at two town hall meetings to discuss how to divide the money. they discussed creating four classes of distributing the funds with families who lost loved ones, getting the most money. exact amount of money each family gets will be determined by the end of september. >>laura: back to school it's a chance for families to save a little money. this year is a little different. holiday is just three days compared to the 10 we had back in 2015. computers no longer qualify for the tax break, either, and the value of clothes has been reduced from $100 to $60. you can read the fine print at fox13news.com. >>walter: and on monday, "good day" will be hosting a supply drive to benefit hillsborough and pinellas county schools. it runs from 6:00 to 10:00 in

pre-pro #28 tc: 33:15:00 (dave) wx live (dave) >>dave: dry morning. showers are starting to pop up. i will say this. at this time yesterday, we had but take a look. as you see the quick little shower, especially down near sarasota, between sarasota and bradenton, we've had a pretty decent line of tropical downpours develop. second round of showers for you, longboat key, moving southwest to northeast, raining in bradenton. not raping in sarasota yet but he do have heavy rain off to the west. pinellas county, we're developing a few showers. it's only a matter of time
6:44 am
downpours worked their way in every one of our coastal counties. citrus county and now in levy, citrus county line with that particular shower and backing it out once again, you can just tell there's ton of moisture in the atmosphere. as we start to warm things up, the instability we're going to have over land plus the tropical moisture is going to equal well above normal rain chances. our rain chances today are running in the nei 60% to 70% which is pretty high. 80 degrees in tampa. 80 in st. petersburg. we barely made it to 88, 89 yesterday and the one good thing about having all of these rain chances way above normal is we don't have the extreme heat so that's the good news. now, over the course of the next few days, computer models have been hinting at some type of weak, low pressure formation
6:45 am
i want to show it to you here. as it develops over the weekend, and where this sets up shop is huge for us and it really will tell a tale of how much rain we're going to get. see this weak low develop here over the state? then maybe start to drift a little bit more toward the west with time? well, what it's trying to do is just force tons of moisture in here over the weekend next week and that's why the computer models are running very, very high with the rainfall totals. but if that little weak low is further west, we don't get as much rain. so the potential exists for some very heavy rain, especially sunday, monday, tuesday and i keep urging you to check back in with us all weekend long. meantime, today looks like yesterday. clouds, showers along the coast in the morning, inland this
6:46 am
we'll stay in the upper 80s. why? clouds and rain chances stay up and notice the 70% for saturday or sunday and for monday and more skytower radar views in a few minutes. okay? >>vanessa: all right. thank you so much, dave. 6:46. we have sky fox arriving on scene of the pasco county incident. as we mentioned before, we're being told it's a traffic crash that resulted from police activity affecting u.s. 41 northbound, southbound this is in the pasco lake it's 41 specifically in the area of bowman where we're seeing this investigation. shut downs here northbound and southbound, they have crime scene tape blocking off the roadway. while we do know that one person was transported to the hospital with some injuries, we're also seeing what looks like an extended scene that's being set up here near at least two vehicles involved with the crash so unfortunately, the situation does not look very good here. we have reports of some traffic
6:47 am
but as i mentioned before, your best work arounds are going to be suncoast parkway northbound, southbound. if you're heading southbound on 41, you wouldn't want to go beyond county line road. that will be one way to get to suncoast parkway. northbound direction drivers just state road 52 is going to be your entrance to get onto suncoast parkway. don't go further north than that point. we do have a crew headed to the scene. we're expecting a media briefing from the pasco county sheriff's office soon, later this morning, so we'll be getting details. stick with us and we'll keep you posted with what we learn. we'll get to 75. we do have reports northbound of a crash in the area of 60. i haven't been able to find it on the cameras, not seeing any delays. just want to let you know to keep your eyes pealed. be careful. >>walter: typically we go to charley for a little reprieve to take a step away from the tough headlines. we're going to get to him on a

we do every year. i just did it again this year, but that was from a year or two ao. i didn't know it was going to be the last time i would see the man alive for goodness sakes which is a lesson in and of itself of appreciating every day and tell those you love, you love them. i have to tell you a quick story about dave mc kay. 18 years ago i started here at fox 13 and i was a general assignment reporter in north pinellas and pasco and it was christmas time and i was doing a live shot in front of countryside mall to all the busy christmas shoppin. on either side of me during my live shot were open parking spaces. there were two parking spaces open. randy and dave, that was the afternoon -- he would do afternoons with randy price at the time. they had the 5:00 news up on their monitor and they thought that was so funny. here is this idiot on tv talking about how crowded the mall is and there's two open parking places next to him. they said, we have to call that guy. they get me on the phone and live on the radio.

where are you from? i said do you know what? you're right. look. it's local news. i'm trying to make it look like it's crowded. what do you want from me? they laughed and i laughed and it began this relationship and that's how it was with dave. we would tease each other, laugh. we were rivals sometimes. i wanted to be dave mc kay at times and he would probably never admit he wanted to be me but he loved the tv thing and i liked being on the radio with him. it was a great friendship and today and a little less entertaining today. my thoughts go out to the radio family, especially veronica, his cohost in the morning. i know she's hurting. a lot of people are hurting over there. rest in peace, dave mc kay. and yes, i'm wearing a goofy shirt. he would think that was funny but i'm wearing the goofy shirt because it's comic con at the convention center, kicks off today at noon and runs all weekend. i have a preview for you.
