29 years ago, all eyes in our area were on a little girl named valerie tokajer. she was very sick, and she needed a liver transplant to survive. to help pay for her transplant, there were fundraisers all over the area. but nearly 30 years later, how did it all turn out for valerie?. fox 13's lloyd sowers caught up with her. the fundraisers were
4:26 am
tokajer. she needed a liver transplant to stay alive. when a liver ?was found, her parents rushed her to pittsburgh for a transplant, but instead they got devastating news. "this morning about 9:30 we were told the liver they percured for valerie was too small and they weren't able to do the transplant" valerie's father bill was a young bradenton police officer. now he's the chief of police in nearby holmes beach. and people still ask about his baby daughter valerie. "and you can tell that they're a little hesitant at times because they haven't heard about valerie so they're not sure that things continue to go well after she stopped being in the news all the time." after valerie finally got a transplant, her body tried to reject the new liver..she had to take lots of medicine with many trips to the doctor. butif you want to know what happened to valerie tokajer, the good news is, you can ask her. well i have my bachelors in health care administration, and i've been married for 9 and a half years now and im working at manatee memorial hospital where coincidentally i was born." and maybe the biggest news of all is aniston.. except for some pain from the scar left by her transpant, aniston's birth a year and a half a go was smooth, and she's perfectly healthy. she's about the same age as valerie when andrew her mom thea, and of course her dad. valerie's always amazed how her parents, with the help of the community, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to save her. "its really incredible because the timeframe it happed to me was before social media. /butt/ 12:10:28 "and how the community still came together even though they didn't have the internet and easy resources to do so." even with all the support they got , it wasn't easy for a young couple desperately trying to save their child. "it was a lot of work, but it was for a worthwhile cause and when it comes to your child, you'll do anything." to be a mom and feel that love herself....thankful that she won that fight for life
