fox 29 news in hd brought to you by xfinity the future of aweso awesome. ♪ right now breaking details on the death of a philadelphia police officer. off duty when he was hit on his motorcycle that driver took off. good evening and thanks for joining us i'm iain page. >> lucy is off tonight. fox 29's dave kinchen is live at accident investigation division where we just heard from police. dave? >> reporter: that's right. police just wrapped up a press conference and they tell us that the officer who was off duty who died in this tragedy has been identified as officer lamar pool. a 19 year veteran of the force. he was 42 years old and he was based out of the 12th district. let's go to some video right now. the off duty officer lamar pool was riding his motorcycle just after 4:00 p.m. when investigators say toyota corolla

traveling in the opposite direction on devereaux struck the officer as they met on roosevelt boulevard. cops say that the car then kept going a few blocks. police tell us the driver suspected in this crash is suspected of dui. the officer was taken to aria torresdale hospital where he died. >> we had couple witnesses, one being a tow truck driver who followed a vehicle really helped out big time and followed the car pinned the car in, called the police. police got there and made the arrest for leaving the scene of an accident. >> feel bad for the family. our heart goes out to them. >> every day i see a car accident coming through here so if it's not on one lane it's on another lane. >> this boulevard is dangerous. people don't follow the signs. they speed. >> reporter: very tragic situation again police say they arrested a 28-year-old man who police say they suspect of driving under the influence. he is in custody charges are pending right now as investigators work with the da's

office one more time a 19 year veteran of the force identified as 42-year-old lamar pool who was assign to the 12th district. died from his injuries after being struck in a hit-and-run but police did arrest that driver. iain, back to you. >> dave, thank you. today was the second deadly crash involving a philadelphia police officer in just one week. last sunday sergeant raphael ali died after crashing his dodge ram pick up into a tree on the 6,000 block of henry avenue. ali was 32 years old and he was assign to the 39th police district. delaware county police officer shot on the job. he is alive tonight thanks to his bullet proof vest. late tonight police releasing the suspect's mug shot held tonight on $500,000 bail. while the officer he's accused of shooting is back home. fox 29's sabina kuriakose explains what happened. >> reporter: this is the manor wood police say shot and wounded one of their own early sunday

morning. the alleged gunman he is cored into a holding cell still in his hospital gown a bandage on his elbow where officers struck him as they returned fire. >> did you shoot a police officer? right did you shoot a police officer? >> authorities say ridley park police officer mark hanley was shot in the chest and leg after responding to a call for a suicidal man at the hoe hawk manor apartment complex in norwood just after 1:00 a.m. police say one thing stood between the officer and certain death. >> there's no doubt without that vest the officer would not be here today. hit him straight in the chest and he's lucky to be alive. >> i was out on the sidewalk, and had just gone in the house because he's got a gun. >> fran woke up to the noise as police and swat teams from across delaware county surrounded the apartment complex next door to her home on mohawk avenue. after the exchange of gunfire authorities evacuated the building. then an hour long standoff ended

with the alleged gunman surrendering to police. norwood police chief mark delvecchio spoke with officer hanley at the hospital. >> i'm just thankful he wore his vest today coming to work. >> reporter: the suspect was taken to taylor hospital in a patrol car and later underwent a psych evaluation before being booked. >> it was very scary. it's very scary. i've never seen anything like it and i've lived here all my life. >> any call you get especially for a suicidal person. you don't know whether they want to take their life or take somebody else with them. it's always a high risk call to go on. >> reporter: police chief sells me officer hanley is expected to make a full recove recovery. in the newsroom sabina kuriakose fox 29 news. breaking news right now out of newark, new jersey. that's where officials say a part of newark liberty international airport has been evacuated. police say a man entered secure hallway inside the airport c terminal. he was stopped by customs and border protection ages.

officer and k9s are doing a security sweep. we're waiting on more details. we'll bring to you as soon as we get them. on your radar tonight, remnants of tropical erika hammering the southeast. flash flood warnings in effect across much of florida with downpours expected well into the week. many commuter communities preparing with sand bags for what could be the worst flooding the state has seen in 60 years. no evacuations yet. but officials are clearing storm drains and asking people to stock up with extra food, water and medicine just in case. closer to home a live look in reading to night. you won't see any rain from this storm but it will impact our humidity. meteorologist mike masco joins us now. we're looking at another possible heat wave, mike. >> this is definitely going to be heat wave. today iain will start that trend. 91 degrees in philadelphia. normally 84. so we are already well above average. did a little math with this 29 days so far this summer featuring 90 degrees or better. we've seen four heat waves and i do think this week is going to feature the fifth heat wave of

the season. each month we've seen above average temperatures. so high temperatures y, 91. that pales in comparison to what's going on across the central planes. 99 degrees in rapid city. business mark 98. the core of the heat, though, this go around will stay out towards the west. we'll see a chunk of that come in our direct. we're feeling the humidity values already increasing. look at the dew points into the upper 60s. that's going to put us on the threshold of oppressive humidity that's expected to set up as we get into the early work week time frame. we'll talk more about the heat, the humidity this will be a long-term heat wave we have another potential hurricane in the atlantic. we'll detail that coming up. >> mike, thank you. >> as we look live in south philadelphia tonight you can stay ahead of weather with the fox 29 news app. get your live radar and alert sent right to your phone you can find it in the apple and google play stores. terrifying night for a north philadelphia mom after her five-year-old daughter disappeared missing for almost 24 hours. the little girl was being watched by a babysitter

yesterday afternoon. in the 2800 block of 22nd street. the sitter asked a friend to watch the child while she left to pick up school supplies w she got back, both the friend and child were gone. >> she was watching the kids. she never did nothing like that. never. um-um. >> reporter: but it scared you. >> it scared me a lot. >> the friend and sitter were both found safe in the neighborhood this afternoon. police are still investigating why that friend left with the child in the first place. community comes out in force to honor a sheriffs deputy gunned down in texas on friday night. hundreds of people gathered in houston this weekend to leave flowers, balloons and messages of support for deputy darrin go forth's family. he was ambushed at a gas station. they believe the gunman shannon miles targeted goforth because he was in uniform. the sheriffs department says the strong show of support from the community is encouraging. >> this means the community has

coming to along with law enforcement. it means the people care about their officers as well as the officers caring about the peop people. we'll work together and make things better here in this community. >> miles will be arraigned tomorrow. he's 30 years old. has a long criminal record. a 26-year-old man is charged with driving under the influence after this deadly crash in northeast philadelphia. it happened early this morning on the 3,000 block of woodhaven road. police say the drunk driving collided with another car, killing a 53-year-old man and critically injured a female passenger. thousands spending the night in south philadelphia tonight to see one of the most popular comedians of our time in a proud philadelphia native. comedian and actor kevin hart performed to a packed hometown crowd at lincoln financial field. our brad sattin is live outside the linc. brad, fans were not disappointed tonight. >> reporter: yeah, iain, that's for sure. i can tell you this show was billed to get started at

better living center in chester giving away 600 bags filled with school supplies. all parents had to do was walk in with their kids and they walk out better prepared for the start of school. organizers say they've been doing the give away for decade now and their goal is to help chester's most needed. >> we've been doing this for 10 years in the city of chester. the better living center dedicated to provideing information and resources so the people of chester and delaware county can empower themselves. we give people the tools to do for themselves. >> long list of partners made the give away possible including cradle to crayons, ups, the rocky run ymca and andrew hicks foundation. parents, we all know the morning routine is crucial when getting out the door on time. one school district near d.c. is changing the time school starts. school in montgomery county, maryland will send their elementary and middle school to school 10 minutes later and their high schoolers 20 minutes later. one of the reasons for the adjustment to give students more time to sleep.

in order. truck was hauling thousands of gallons of diesel fuel when it crashed into the guardrail late yesterday sparking the blast. the front end of the cab in the fire closing lanes for hour. incredibly there were no serious injuries. florida mother is recovering tonight after gunman wait for her to answer her front door then open fire. it happened yesterday morning in the town of riverview. investigators say angela morales scene here in mug shot from petty theft answered the door of her home while her husband and two kids were inside. that's when the gunman opened fire shooting morales. investigators found more than one type of shell casing they think there was more than one shooter. neighbors are worried about the mom's health and safety of her children. >> just witness has to be something that's going to be something they'll be helped with later. my whole process what will be the next step with those kids and how they going to get back to normal. >> cops aren't sure about a motive they're still looking for the shooters. morales is still in the hospital

where she's in critical condition but we're told her condition has improved. atlanta braves fan has died after falling off the upper deck of turner stadium and into the lower level seats. it happened yesterday. the braves were playing the yankees, officials say 60-year-old gregory murray a season ticket holder fell and landed head first. it's not clear how exactly murray fell but police do not suspect any foul play. a me can mick in southern california shows up for work and comes face to face with a mountain lion. he says he open the door to his auto body shop and the animal just pounced on him. lucky for him he says the big cat got scared away. sheriffs depth tease and wildlife officials showed up and corner the two-year-old animal behind a vehicle and tranquilized her. >> i hear this story but you never think it's going to happen to you. >> fish and wildlife officers put the animal in the back of a pick up and poured water on her to keep her cool. they don't believe she's a

the scene of an accident and is suspected of drunk driving. a man's car stolen right in front of his home but he's got a plan to catch the thieves. fox's dave spencer shows us what happens when his plan backfired. >> reporter: it started when jamie estrada came home to his apartment lockwood street. his neighbor was having party. >> after of the party he goes home. the neck morning he notices his car key has been taken and so, too, has ace ford focus like this one scene here. >> then i went outside. too late. i didn't see my car. >> he filed a report with poli police. then something unexpected happens. crooks get in touch with him. >> someone called me on my phone saying i have your carpet you want it back. you need to pay some money. i say okay. probably. i tried to bring them to my

house probably i can bring the police, too and catch them. >> reporter: police tell us they would never recommend setting up a meeting like this. but he was desperate. he was on hold with police once the thieves realized that his phone is on estrada is assaulted and his phone is stolen. >> i just felt like hit on my head like here. >> uh-huh. >> and i just saw like -- didn't have any -- felt totally, like, i don't know, dizzy. they kick me on the legs. >> reporter: he filed another report then hops online. using a built in app he finds out where his stolen phone is and accesses a potential suspect pick on his stolen phone. he calls police to deliver the evidence but his calls are never returned. >> we don't want crime in the city, right? >> right. >> that's what we want to do. >> detroit police are

investigating but they first need to get enough evidence for a warrant. one very lucky california man finds $20 on the ground and turns night a million bucks. herbert tank used the found money to buy two lottery scratch off tickets you guessed it one of them was a million dollars winner. >> like i don't play these thing. this is really just, um, you know, just lucky chance really. >> tank says he plans to spend some of the money on his mom and save the rest. that's pretty good advice. get a look at this definitely not what you want to see out on the water. a hammer head shark circling these two boats off the coast of san diego. reports started pouring in about the 10-foot shark being aggressive to some boaters and kayak kearse even following some all the way to the beach. lifeguards ended up forcing swimmers out of the water but no other reports have come in since then. on your roy door tonight hundreds of runners take advantage of today's nice weather in south philadelphia. the philly 10k was early this

morning. the finish line was sweet with federal doughnuts waiting for the runners. let's check in with mike masco what's on your forecast. >> that was sticky run and we're expecting the real muggy air to come in by tomorrow. here's a shot in old city right now. it's still 81 degrees as we talk together. dew points up at 65. we even have a heat index come right around 83 degrees. heat indices the next several days are going to run well into the middle and upper 90s much here's your dew point map again when we show you this map that means we're basically previewing a sticky solution that's expected to set up dew points in the 60s that is going to make for a very muggy set up as we get into the work week. yup in town. 70's down across the atlantic city boardwalk into wildwood. lucky sevens in dover and north and west upper 60s as you get into mount pocono. tomorrow morning we are starting off very balmy. 74 degrees. 82 at 10:00 o'clock in the morning. that's a launching pad right up to 90 degrees tomorrow. now, we saw a couple of scattered showers and storms on ultimate doppler all this a falling apart.

maybe in lancaster looking west a little heat lightning that's a decaying thunderstorm and that's not expected to produce anything across the delaware valley. just a little piece of energy moving through the big story is the wet weather across florida. they're going to see ballpark three to 5-inch amounts of rain as that is the remnants of eri erika. a more organized storm we find is hurricane potentially hurricane fred. winds right now 70 miles an hour. it's still a tropical storm fred but the national hurricane center thinks this will develop into a hurricane as we go into the over knit hours and into tomorrow morning. the good news with fred, this will probably get ripped apart just towards the west of africa. not expecting this to be a big player in the united states forecast foreseeable future. our setup this area of high pressure will lift all this heat and humidity back down to the south. lift it in our direction that means we are going to be -- going to 90 if not better than that over the next several days. fox future cast doing good job showing you probably around 90, 92 degrees for tomorrow. there could be an isolated

shower or thunderstorm just be aware of that i think it's more ice laterred than scattered and then for tuesday more sunshine and right back into the lower and middle 90's there may ab couple of heat advisories issued across the delaware valley. this weather could be dangerous if you're out for long periods of time. it's muggy setup for the overnight hours. 72 in the city. upper 60s, well to the north and to the west tomorrow again going for 90. today we hit 90. monday we'll go 90. 92 on tuesday would make this the official tim heat for philadelphia. it's crazy. hot and humid 93 on wednesday. steambath on thursday. maybe we break down the heat by the end of this week. you love the heat. >> i do love the heat. yeah. >> that would make it thrive - thrive -- -- 90-degree days this summer. >> make up for last summer we didn't have as many. >> good point. >> thank you mike. appreciate it that. will do it for us tonight on the fox 29 news at 10:00 but keep it right here for sports sunday. ♪
