the city of brussels is still an active crime scene tonight. authorities are still on the hunt for suspects connected to yesterday's terrorist attack. officials say the suspected bomb maker is one of the two dead suicide bombers at the brussels airport. and another man believed to have slipped away, during all of the chaos. jonathan vigliotti has more on the investigation and how city residents are coping. >> reporter: a diverse crowd gathered in central brussels, beside a makeshift memorial to the bombing victims. a day after the attack killed at least 31 and injured more than 250. the city's spirit is unbroken. >> be stronger. >> reporter: daniel and dena are visiting have buffalo, new york. they left the rail station yesterday, about 20 minutes before the bombing. >> i think we need to be patient. give it sometime. and when the airport opens, we

them. >> four men are responsible for carrying out tuesday's attack. three of them died after detonating bombs. >> they include ibrahim elvacari. with another man, identified as najim. his brother, khalid died in the blast at the subway station. >> reporter: a prosecutor says a laptop found in a trash bin, is believed to contain brirks -- ibrahim's will in which he said he felt unsafe. for brussels, this is a day of reverence and defiance. they compared it to post 9/11. >> we're part of history. this is part of history. >> reporter: a history no one wants repeated. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, brussels, belgium. and tonight, a number of americans remain unaccounted for. including some u.s. government personnel. and the state department has issued a travel alert for all

the brussels airport will remain closed at least until saturday. pope francis led some in a moment of silence. the pope asked the faithful to say a silent prayer to the people of belgium. and he called for all people to unite in condemning cruel acts of violent extremism. >> u.s. secretary of state john kerry will fully express condolences. they'll also meet to discuss the attacks and fighting terror. kerry is currently in talks with moscow, for talks with other officials in syria and ukraine. vice president joe biden and his wife jill paid a visit to belgium's capital. the vice president offered this country's support to investigate the attacks. and eliminate belgium's terror cells. >> today, the

fighting issis his number 1 priority. he pledged to fight the terrorist group until it is destroyed. he said he would not order the american military to order a barrage of air strikes, though. >> when i hear somebody say, we should carpet bomb iraq or syria, not only is that inhumane, not only is that contrary to our values, but that would likely be an extraordinary mechanism for isil to recruit more people willing to die and explode bombs in an airport. or in a metro station. that's not a smart strategy. >> the president also dismissed ted cruz's call to increase surveillance in muslim neighborhoods. but defending his position, saying law enforcement should be empowered. >> as you can imagine, leaders of one of the largest muslim communities are taking issue with cruz's position. and they're condemning the attacks in brussels.

surae chinn has reaction. surae, they have condemned these extremist attacks in the past. i'm going to guess they're pretty upset with ted cruz now, right? >> they are. but they're also not surprised. we are in a sterling neighborhood, just across the street from the adams center. and we asked this community, not just those at the mosque, but also people here in the neighborhood how they would feel if law enforcement patrolled the area, just because there might be a higher population of muslims or people who worship at the mosque. the beans on his wife, heidi cruz. trump was responding to a political action photo that showed his wife before they were married. >> you probably know by now that most of the things that donald trump says have no basis in reality. so we are not worried in the least. we're focusing on our campaign. and we are going to continue to do that. >> reporter: donald trump won last night's arizona primary. but came in third place to ted cruz in utah. today, cruz picked up the endorsement of former candidate jeb bush. he also called john kasich a spoiler. and suggested he find a place in the future. after rejecting it twice. the district's public service commission has a -- approved petco's merger with exelon. but it comes with strings attached. the commissioner wants more than $70 million to use for company discounts and energy

bizarre and disturbing murder investigators have cleared the scene where a man was found shot and burned to death, under a shrub on the front lawn of a townhome in the 5,000 block of mill hot mar drive in district heights. the scene has all the hallmarks of a chilling ambush. at least two were hit by a hail of gunfire. >> i parked my car over there last night. late. and i just walked on into my house. i felt comfortable. now, maybe not so comfortable waw walking at night. >> yeah. we wouldn't expect nothing like this. like it's a school right at the end of the block. >> well, police have not released the identity of the victim or made any comments on the circumstances of this case. >> reporter: u.s. park police have identified one of two men now wanted for an attempted child abduction, outside the national air and space museum, down on the mall. >> he is 60-year-old bernard dry. police tell us dry frequently traveled travel from the u.s. to israel and may stay in the new york city area. police say a ou

3rd, when a man grabbed a chaperone. they yelled, scaring the man off. the child was not hurt. a man shot and killed by a fredericksburg police officer. they've also released the officer's name. they say officer krist fer bosmer, pulled over travis blair for a traffic stop yesterday afternoon. but blair hit the gas and dragged the officer from 600 feet until the car crashed into a ditch. investigators say the two men got into an altercation. and the officer shot blair in the leg. blair eventually died later in the hospital. investigators say blare had an outstanding warrant for heroin possession in spotsylvania. fredericksburg police have asked state police to conduct the shooting investigation. coming up, cherry blossom lovers will have to wait one day to see blossoms at their peak. battle makes its way to the supreme court. i'm weijia

appeals court sided with the obama administration. one has ruled for the religious groups. it would mean different rules apply in different parts of the country. the chicago police officer charged in the shooting of a teenager is concerned for his safety. officer jason van dyke said his client received death threats so he's asking the judge for permission not to attend the may 5th hearing. that's the deadline to assign a special prosecutor. flint county customers were needlessly and tragically exposed to toxic levels of lead. the task force, appointed by michigan governor rick shnied nidor, places much of the game on the administration. it identifies failings by every state and local agency involved. the task force offers recommendationsations to prevent this from happening again. scores of children got sick, after e

welcome back. we are live in louisville, kentucky. right behind me at the yum center, maryland faces off against top-seeded kansas, tomorrow night in the sweet 16. it's our first sweet 16 birth in 13 years. and this team is a lot more excited than nervous. at least that's what they're telling me however, they find themselves in a rather unfamiliar place. they are the underdogs. that hasn't been the case very often this season at all. however, talking to the team today in the locker room, you get the sense, they kind of have a chip on their shoulder because they haven't lived up to the hype of the preseason expectation. >> yeah. i mean, we don't look at it as we're underdogs. i think we want to get to -- we need to take the approach. it's just like any other game. and i think as long as we're locked in. >> i'm very happy. i mean, a lot of people didn't think we were going to make it
