peg. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. you know fairfax county voting precincts were very busy this morning. there were long lines. elections officials are not expecting long lines this evening because of new voting equipment. they're expecting things to move along at a fast pace. now over in lauden county they have about 53% of registered voters casting ballots and that county, you know, is in the tenth congressional district. the enti tenth congressional district where republican barbara comestock is being challenged by luann bennett. most were there to cast a ballot in the presidential race. >> there was a constant stream of voters in the fast changing political landscape. >> hilary. >> i voted hilary, yes, i did. >> trump. >> you're going to vote for donned trump. why is that? >> i like him.

in 2015 was the culmination of a bitter divorce. david black broke into her arlington home and stabbed her in the heart and the throat while their two children slept nearby. they were found wandering in the neighborhood the next day. election volunteers in prince george's county today came upon a grizzly scene. they say a woman ran out of her home screaming she'd been on fire. neighbors did their best to help this woman who suffered severe burns. >> reporter: this fire has turned into a crime scene. investigators are inside right now taking pictures. you can imagine just how scary it was for volunteers right across the street here. a woman came running out of this home covered in burns screaming he set me on fire. on this historic day polling volunteers say they will never

screaming near kettering middle school. >> she was like, he burned me. my husband burned me. whoa. >> her horrific experience. she had skin coming off of her chest and face. >> reporter: the fire broke out after a fight between a woman and her partner. >> broke from gray to black. you couldn't even see the house. >> reporter: just across the street volunteers were standing outside when they say severely burned was naked except for a coat. she begged them for help. >> it really left me speechless. i think we were all in shock. that poor woman. >> i don't know where else she would have gone. the doors were locked. there was no one here. i'm just happy we were out here. >> reporter: the volunteers called 911. tonight hoping they did enough. >> it's so terrible.

only fios can. for the second day in a row a worker has taken a steep fall at a construction site. this happened just before 1:00 this afternoon on 15th street northwest. rescuers with the dc fire department were able to reach that man after he fell 20 feet. he was rushed to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. just yesterday two workers were

wheaten. roads near 17th and m in northwest dc are back open after a fire this morning. a lot of people reported seeing black smoke rising through the sky. the fire was contained to a mechanical unit that was being demolished. no one was hurt. voter intimidation. or freedom of speech? that's the question that some voters are asking in montgomery county. wusa9's evan koslof with the story. >> this to stand up and to take a stand. >> reporter: meet richard. he's outside the meadow hall elementary holding a sign that warns of fraud and so-called undocumented voters. as he warns of voter fraud by democrats, he's being accused of the same thing. >> he was chanting and he was chanting lock her up, lock her up, lock her up. >> reporter: that's ronald, one of many who raised their concerns with his presence.

even if voters give the measure a thumbs up, a congresswoman says don't hold your breath. even with a republican congress dc statehood would be an uphill battle. >> we don't have another state with us. the last state to get in, alaska and hawaii, one was republic, one of democrat. that's always been what it has been. i think we can do it if we do it step by step. if we take things like the statehood vote and as i called for, have a real plan what is our plan for the coming years and at the end of that year what is our plan. >> dc residents will see the proposed state listed as new columbia, even though members of the dc council voted to change the name to be the state of washington, d.c. plenty of things tonight.

scott broom is there to catch us up. initially we thought she was just discovered dead. there's something more going on here, scott. >> reporter: that's correct. miss rivers was reported found dead noon on sunday. it took investigators and the medical examiner until today to determine that she was murdered. sources telling me she was strangled to death. >> i'm just shocked. wow. >> she was a nice lady. she didn't low profile. you know. just real nice, quiet lady. >> reporter: residents of gateway gardens in bladensburg stunned. behind this door a quiet 75- year-old woman strangled to death. homicide investigators have padlocked the unit as the attempt to solve the mystery unfolds. neighborsheard nothing and fire miss rivers must have let her attacker in. >> it had to be somebody she knew. it had to be.

elderly person. what could somebody like that do that would make you go to that extent? >> it's a mystery to me. i've never been in a building with somebody lost their life, you know. just really sad. >> police were called her stay tuned at noon by someone who found rivers in the apartment. neighbors said she lived alone but has an adult son who is a frequent visitor. the finding of homicide was not announced until today. old. so police in prince george's county are putting on a full court press to get to the bottom of this. they have offered a $25,000 reward for information that might lead to a killer. just one measure of how seriously they're taking this investigation. reporting live in bladensburg, scott broom. >> let's hope it helps, scott. our attempts to contact miss rivers' family today were not successful. back now to the election.

only got one scanner and some people complained of up to an hour long wait because their one scanner was broken. wusa9's stephanie ramirez reporting. >> reporter: i learned it wasn't a broken scanner but actually voters receiving an incorrect page two on the ballot. so when the voters went to put the ballot into the scanner it wasn't accepting them. >> we were concerned about the scanner not working because but because of the board of election being so prompt i don't think we lost any votes. >> the two election judges say they don't get to see the ballots until day of but tell me as soon as they realized the issue they phoned the board of elections which got here with new ballots in about 15 minutes. i'm told none of the voters were turned away and some actually chose to wait. >> tremendously excited to have a chance to finally express my point of view in a constructive
