This collection of verses, made by one of the leading scholar-monks in Sri Lanka in the 20th century, is one of the most useful compiliations on the moral life of the layman that can be found. Drawn mainly from the great verses collections in the Pāḷi Nikāyas almost all aspects of the lay life have been covered, and it brings together in a fairly comprehensive way many teachings that would otherwise be lost in obscurity... The Jatakamala or Garland of Birth Stories by Aryasura retells in Classical Sanskrit 34 of the Buddha's previous lives, illustrating the virtues he pursued during the time he was striving in previous births before attaining Awakening. The text was beautifully translated by the Dutch scholar J S Speyer and published in 1895 as the first book in the Sacred Books of the Buddhists series. Here it is read in by Anandajoti Bhikkhu, who has also made the text available on the Ancient Buddhist Texts...

Lo Weda Sangarawa was composed by Ven. Vīdāgama Maitreya Mahathera in the 15th century. This venerable poet flourished during the Kotte period of Sri Lankan history, which saw a revival of Sinhala literature, and is the best known among his literary works, both for its remarkable poetic excellence and the vast impact it has made on the lives of the Buddhists ever since it was composed. Couched in the classical Sinhala metre abounding in alliteration, the poem is a perfect blend of sound and...

The Mahāvaṁsa is a well-known Chronicle from Sri Lanka that has seen a number of translations into English, most famously by Wilhelm Geiger. It tells the story of the Kings of Sri Lanka, and the establishment of Buddhism in that country, and the support and challenges the religion has received down the ages. What is little known to the general public is that there is a secondary version of the text, which its editor chose to call the Extended Mahāvaṁsa. This text is almost twice as long...

The Great Chapter, which forms part of the Book of Discipline in the Pali Canon, is one of the main sources of information we have for the life story of the Buddha in the year following his Awakening. Many different episodes are recounted here: the time he spent in the vicinity of the Bodhi tree and his encounters there; his decision to teach and journey across India to accomplish that desire; the 1st, 2nd and 3rd discourses that were recorded; the conversation of 1,000 yogis; and his meeting...

This work gives a selection of verses that are recited when worshipping the Triple Gem; and a collection of discourses that are popularly used as Safeguards. Part of the chants are meant to be recited every day, and part rotate on a weekly basis. The system for the chanting is as follows: first there is an everyday Pūjā (which will depend on what is being offered). Then the daily Parittaṁ section begins, at the end of the chants for the day there is meditation, and when finished you can...

The earliest recorded discourses of the Buddha are found in narratives detailing his early career, not long after the Awakening. We have three main sources for a record of this period, they are the Lalitavistara, the Mahākhandhaka, and the Mahāvastu, which apparently formed the substance of the Vinaya of the Lokottaravāda sect. Embedded into these narratives there are certain teachings, which now form the earliest recorded discourses of the Buddha, and it is those that are presented here.

In the presentation here I have given an analysis of the metres before each verse. This is then followed by five verses in Vatta metre which encourage the...

The second section approaches the subject from the point of view of how the practice can lead to the attainment of path and fruit; and shows which mental factors are present at that time (6-7). The texts which are translated here describe the previous deeds of the Buddha which led in his last life to various kinds of suffering: from spending a long time in the wasteland of severe austerities; to receiving slander at various hands; to physical ailments of various kinds: being attacked and cut by rocks and scalpels; and getting headaches, backaches and dysentry.

Some short talks that were given at the Saturday dāna in the Vivekavana office in Berapit. They were given in English and translated into Mandarin, but the latter has been edited out. The quality of the recording is fairly poor, but the content is quite useful, so I decided to publish them here.

A reading of the Long Discourse on The Ways of Attending to Mindfulness, which forms the 22nd Discourse in the Long Collection (Digha Nikaya) of the Discourses of the Buddha. This is the main discourse on the development of meditation in the Pali Canon. The files in this collection were updated in October 2011 to reflect changes in presentation of the html files on my website .

The first talk was given on Vesakha Eve at the Vivekavana monastery, and shows how everyone is capable of developing the perfections, especially the perfection of generosity. The second piece is a combination of two short talks I gave on generosity; and the third was a follow up talk on Generosity as a Perfection (Pāramī). These were given at the Saturday Lunchtime dānas at the Vivekavana office in Berapit in August. The audio quality is quite poor, but the material is useful so I thought it...

Ten short but profound discourses from the Thematic Discourses (Saṁyuttanikāya) in the Pāḷi Canon in which Māra tries to tempt or distract various Arahat nuns but only gets fine rebukes from the nuns for his trouble. Some of the most memorable teaching in verse is found in this collection. The text with the audio embedded on the page, can be found on this page . The recital here is in English, for the same discourses in Pāḷi go to this page .

Ven. Bodhicitta gave the first of these talks on International Bhikkhuni Day, September 29th, 2012 at the Vivekavana Buddhist Society in Penang, Malaysia. The rest of the talks were given in the following weeks as she elaborated on the subject, and explained it in a methodical way. The talks discuss the worthy aims a Buddhist should have, the various realms one can be born into, how one gets to them, and encourages everyone to strive for Awakening, rather than rebirth.
