This thesis discussed the problem of the removal of landmines and other explosive remnants of war, as part of the complex process of stabilizing a nation after a conflict. Specifically, it examines the case study resulting from the Italian reconstruction process begun in September 1943 with the signing of two armistices, analyzing the role played by the Allied Military Government of Occupied Territory, the Allied Control Commission, and the Italian institutions in solving this impelling and...

There is a literature and a common perception that the Soviets were defeated and driven from Afghanistan. This is not true. When the Soviets left Afghanistan in 1989, they did so in a coordinated, deliberate, professional manner, leaving behind a functioning government, an improved military and an advisory and economic effort insuring the continued viability of the government. The withdrawal was based on a coordinated diplomatic, economic and military plan permitting Soviet forces to withdraw...

This report discusses the basic biotechnology research problems that require solution by the year 2000 to ensure optimum performance of manned Air Force aeronautical systems. The projected aeronautical systems for strategic, tactical and support systems are discussed, with emphasis placed on the roles of increased automation and information processing, as well as the increased physical stress of higher performance aircraft, extended mission durations and new weapon threats. Six generic areas of...

This report looks at the interaction of radiated electromagnetic fields with earth ground in military or law- enforcement applications of high-power microwave (HpM) systems. For such systems to be effective, the microwave power density on target must be maximized. The destructive and constructive scattering of the fields as they propagate to the target will determine the power density at the target for a given source. The question of field polarization arises in designing an antenna for an HPM...

The eight optical isomers of dimethylheptylpyran as the acetate ester were administered parenterally to normal subjects. The main effect was hypotension which was most prominent when the subjects stood. In the doses used, isomers 2 and 4 (and their mixtures) were the only ones possessing biological activity. Doses of 1 to 2 micro gr/kg produced a pronounced and prolonged orthostatic hypotension. A resting tachycardia occurred with isomer 4. Symptoms were those related to hypotension, plus dry...

Improved field measurements for Styrofoam and Plexiglas cages and a microwave exposure array previously designed and constructed at AFRRI are described. A new miniature isotropic electric field probe designed by the Bureau of Radiological Health was used. The new measurements demonstrated the effectiveness of the cages for microwave research. The microwave exposure array was shown to provide equal average power density to all exposed animals to within + or - 5 percent.

Aircraft performance, in its most general sense configuration, can be defined as the flight achievements an aircraft must execute for successful mission accomplishment. Obviously, expected performance parameters must be an integral part of the design process of an aircraft. Given certain performance expectations by the customer, the designer must make decisions regarding wing loading, power plant selection, airfoil selection, planform configuration, and myriad other considerations. All of these...

Divergence experienced during rolling maneuvers has frequently been referred to as inertial coupling. This leads to a misconception of the problems involved. The divergence experienced during rolling maneuvers is complex because it involves not only inertial properties, but aerodynamic ones as well. The material in this chapter is intended to offer a physical explanation of the more important causes of roll coupling. Coupling results when a disturbance about one aircraft axis causes a...

NAVMRWARCENACDIV Warminster began working on an integrated Tomcat NVIS compatible cockpit nearly 8 years ago. This effort continued for many years and would have ultimately been incorporated into the Block 1 upgrade to the F-14. However, F-14 upgrade plans changed, and the Warminster efforts shifted to designing a nonintegral (and less expensive) NVO cockpit. Independently, several years ago, the Red Rippers of VF-11 set out to find a low cost NVU compatible kit for their F-14D's. Working with...

The PLA Navy seeks control of local seas. This has both short- and long-term political implications for the region and for the United States. The United States cannot prevent a sovereign power from building a modern defense force, but it can maintain the military balance and peace in the region by...
