This paper investigates the applicability of high order statistical autoregressive (AR-HOS) modeling method in analyzing biomedical signals. The autoregressive (AR) method using linear prediction and AR-HOS method using cumulants are applied on normal and pathological heart sound signals. It is found that the AR-HOS modeling a signal produce more accurate and higher resolution spectrum than AR modeling.

The air attack that killed al Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- the successful synchronization of actionable intelligence and tactical military operations that eliminated a key terrorist network node -- was a good thing. Much of the media-pundit and popular analysis that followed has focused on the potential impact of al-Zarqawi's death on the outcome of the war in Iraq. The demand of the American public for information and results notwithstanding, the emphasis on outcome is not the right...

Although they worked together nominally, the central Al Qaeda network, as led by Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, and the late Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terrorist group in Iraq held vastly different conceptions of jihad. The U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq minimized the magnitude of that ideological clash, enabling Zarqawi's limited cooperation with Al Qaeda in the Iraqi arena. Although they used each other for tactical support, publicity, and recruiting purposes, their doctrinal...

The Maoist Revolutionary model provides a template of a successful revolution. Both the Taliban and the Chinese underwent similar circumstances. Both movements formed as a result of failed states seeking ways to restore unity and order within their environments. The purpose of this thesis is to use the Maoist revolutionary model to gain insights in vulnerabilities within the current Taliban strategy. First, the thesis examines the history behind both movements to determine if there are any...

The United States is engaged in a long war against terror as a top national security priority. While initial response to the unexpected on September 2001 (9/11), terror attacks was clearly unfunded, the U.S. is still using emergency appropriations to fund ongoing operations as well as other non-emergency defense requirements. Since 2001 over $500B has been infused into defense programs and operations through supplemental appropriations, separate from funds provided through DOD's comprehensive...

China's export boom has surged Chinese share in the global export market and has created general concern as to the threat China poses to both U.S. economic dominance and to the developing economies directly competing with Chinese manufacturing. The recent focus of Chinese investment in Mexican manufacturing has generated considerable press and commentary about the danger of Chinese influence in the very backyard of the United States. Concentrating on the maquiladora sector, this paper examines...

This thesis examines the origins of the conflict which engulfed the former Yugoslavia in 1991. Findings will indicate that the violence within this culturally diverse and historically multi-ethnic region of Europe was not driven by ancient ethnic sentiments, nor was it a 'civil war' between 'traditional tribal rivals' --fighting for 'hundreds of years'--; but was rather the direct result of a within-group (intra-state/inter-cultural) political struggle. The study will demonstrate that the...

Quick dissemination of information about new vulnerabilities and attacks is essential to time-critical handling of threats in information security, but little systematic tracking has been done of it. We are developing data mining techniques to track the flow of such information by comparing important information-security Web sites, alert messages, and strings in packets to find similar words and sentences. We report on tools we have developed to collect relevant sentences, with a particular...

This paper involves an in-depth study of the art of command at all three levels of warfare. It examines this art through the eyes of one of Napoleon's Marshals, Louis N. Davout. The paper addresses and accomplishes three primary goals. First, it defines act of command and shows its relevance to modern day warfare. Second, the paper shows that Marshal Davout was the best of Napoleon's generals and had an art of command that rivaled the Emperor himself. Finally, the paper demonstrates how Davout...

Some revisionist historians also subscribe to conspiracy theories and believe that key...

This dissertation examines firm legitimacy at the time of a firm's initial public stock offering (IPO) and its impact on the quantity and quality of cooperative agreements post-IPO. Firm legitimacy is operationalized at the time of IPO as a combination of total firm value, number of employees, firm age, market-to-book ratio, and percentage of ownership maintained by the original owners. The dissertation finds that firm value, market-to-book ratio, and firm age are positively related to an...

The concept of the factors of structural safety presently applied to the design of fixed-wing aircraft can be traced back some 50 years. The last decades have brought about rapid progress in establishing aerodynamic derivatives, defining load conditions and predicting structural loads as well as enabling more detailed analyses for stress and deformation to be made. The lack of a rational basis for the factors of safety together with the progress made brought about a discussion of changing the...

Recent scientific advances have revealed that a malignant tumor can be viewed as an organ consisting of different types of interacting cells. Different tumor cell types play different roles in the growth and development of the tumor and thus in the end, all cells within the tumor may help pave the way for further tumor growth in a patient with cancer. Current work in the field indicates that fibroblasts surrounding breast cancers are particularly important for cancer progression, but no one...

Underwater vision is vital to many Navy applications involving mine detection, diver visibility, and search and rescue. The ability to see better and farther has always been a central goal of underwater imaging projects. Unlike in the atmosphere, where visibility can be on the order of miles, the visual range in the underwater environment is rather limited, at best on the order of tens of meters, even in the clearest waters. This is the result of combined attenuation effects from both...

Many receivers today operate in an interference-limited environment. In a dense signal environment, the performance of a receiver is limited by interference from multiple signals at the receiver rather than signal-to-noise ratio. In the interference-limited environment, there is a diminishing return from investing additional resources into improving traditional receiver parameters such as noise figure. Advanced processing techniques exist that can help recover information that would otherwise...

Romania has faced doctrinal, structural, and social issues to be eligible to join NATO. Romania was under communist rule for 20 years and now it is time for it to establish its own place in a world of democracy. During the May 2001 press conference, the Chief of General Staff affirmed: Joining NATO or not, is rather a political issue. From the military point of view, we are trying to get ready for membership. NATO embodies the democratic values Romania aspires to. We wish to join NATO, but not...

A 2D photonic crystal optical switch is proposed based on a rods-in-air square-lattice photonic crystal by removing two cross-lines of rods from a 2D square-lattice photonic crystal to form four optical channels. The simulation results show that, when inserting a single rod along the diagonal line of the intersection area of two removed cross-lines of rods, the position of the single inserted rod determines how much incident energy goes into different channels. In the case of transverse...

A concern over the potential for resource competition to serve as a driver for conflict has established the need to more fully examine the relationship between energy resources and conflict. This exploratory correlational study examined the relationship between oil resources, armed conflict and stability. The ability of abundant oil resources to attract conflict and the ability of oil resource deficits to compel participation in armed conflict abroad were both explored. Since instability may be...

The development of low power wireless sensor networks has generated interest in previously unsuitable energy harvesting methods as viable sources of power. We present a microfabricated synthetic leaf that can generate output voltages of 2 - 5 mu(V) for each motion of a gas-liquid interface due to the mechanical energy of evaporation-driven flow. The presented results provide a proof of concept for the use of evaporation-driven flow as a scalable mechanism of electrical energy conversion and...

The US Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) Virtual Autonomous Navigation Environment (VANE) is a physics-based, multi-scale numerical testbed designed to quantitatively and accurately predict sensor and autonomous system performance in a simulation environment. The work presented here captures progress on an initial empirical evaluation of how well the current VANE system is able to reproduce a real autonomy system's perception performance. Findings will directly guide continuing development of...

As operational commander of hundreds of ships and aircraft, Admiral Raymond A. Spruance had the capacity to distill what he observed--and sometimes felt--into its essence and to focus on the important details by a mental synthesis. He would then charge his staff with comprehensive planning to achieve his purpose. Often the plan would be rent asunder, but it would retain its tyranny of purpose--roughly, the mission--as Spruance's staff and commanders adapted to the circumstances. Although this...

Since August 2003, negotiations over North Korea's nuclear weapons programs have involved six governments: the United States, North Korea, China, South Korea, Japan, and Russia. Since the talks began, North Korea has operated nuclear facilities at Yongbyon and apparently has produced weapons-grade plutonium estimated as sufficient for five to eight atomic weapons. North Korea tested a plutonium nuclear device in October 2006 and apparently a second device in May 2009. North Korea admitted in...

Army commanders have insufficient time to train on every mission requirement and organizational standard. Mission essential task lists help to scope training requirements based on current performance. However, there presently is no way for unit trainers to systematically schedule their training based on expected performance. The ability to project training status outward, beyond current performance levels, would enhance decisions about scheduling training. The ARI has previously investigated...

We report that an aqueous solution containing 1023 M adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and citrate-phosphate-dextrose-adenine (CPDA-1) can effectively replace transfusable human red blood cells in an in vitro Klun and Debboun bioassay system for evaluating chemicals for mosquito feeding-deterrent activity, using either Aedes aegypti or Anopheles stephensi. These species fed with similar avidity through collagen membrane covering aqueous 1023 M ATP plus CPDA-1 or red blood cells in CPDA-1...

This paper proposes a geometry-based statistical model for multiple-input multiple-output shallow water acoustic multipath fading channels. From the reference model, the corresponding space-time-frequency correlation function is derived. Finally, the derived spatial and temporal correlations are compared with the empirically obtained channel statistics and close agreement is observed.

The goal of this project is to improve the capability to identify and detect surface waves under a Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. To date, we have concentrated on two tasks: development of improved regionalized earth models and dispersion curves, and improvements to surface wave processing through implementation of phase-matched filtering and path corrected spectral magnitudes. The first objective is to improve the dispersion curves that are now in use at the International Data Centre...

Although rapid reorientation of a black hole spin axis (lasting less than a few Myr) has been suggested as a mechanism for the formation of wings in X-shaped radio galaxies (XRGs), to date no convincing case of reorientation has been found in any XRG. Alternative wing formation models such as the hydrodynamic backflow models are supported by observed trends indicating that XRGs form preferentially with jets aligned along the major axis of the surrounding medium and wings along the minor axis....

Washington, DC, September 2017: The following are the remarks of former DDI Jack Welch's executive assistant, who recently served as a panelist at a joint CSI-DI conference celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Directorate of Intelligence. Jack Welch became Deputy Director for Intelligence (DDI) after long service at General Electric. For me, a longtime student of management theory- especially Welch's- his arrival offered much promise. Amazingly, his arrival also led to the seeming...
