This report documents the methods used to reclassify Army Medical Department (AMEDD) International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) and International Classification of Procedures in Medicine (ICPM) data to International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). This process required significant interaction with national nosology consultants and civilian universities. The purpose of the reclassification or conversion was to employ a recently...

This thesis discussed the problem of the removal of landmines and other explosive remnants of war, as part of the complex process of stabilizing a nation after a conflict. Specifically, it examines the case study resulting from the Italian reconstruction process begun in September 1943 with the signing of two armistices, analyzing the role played by the Allied Military Government of Occupied Territory, the Allied Control Commission, and the Italian institutions in solving this impelling and...

The Jedburghs consisted of three man allied teams trained to conduct guerilla warfare in conjunction with the French Resistance in support of the allied invasion of France. These teams consisting of French, British, and American men comprised of two officers, one always being French, and an enlisted wireless telegraph radio operator, were uniformed soldiers who volunteered in 1943 for this hazardous work behind enemy lines. The results of the investigation in the area of the hydrofoil theory are systematized in this monograph. A great deal of attention is given to the mechanical-mathematical aspects of the hydrofoil theory and to the development of the effective methods for solving the basic equations in the hydrofoil theory. This book considers the theory of steady motion of a wing with an arbitrary profile in a plane-parallel flow; the linear theory of thin hydrofoils in the two-dimensional and three-dimensional...

Divergence experienced during rolling maneuvers has frequently been referred to as inertial coupling. This leads to a misconception of the problems involved. The divergence experienced during rolling maneuvers is complex because it involves not only inertial properties, but aerodynamic ones as well. The material in this chapter is intended to offer a physical explanation of the more important causes of roll coupling. Coupling results when a disturbance about one aircraft axis causes a...

Aircraft performance, in its most general sense configuration, can be defined as the flight achievements an aircraft must execute for successful mission accomplishment. Obviously, expected performance parameters must be an integral part of the design process of an aircraft. Given certain performance expectations by the customer, the designer must make decisions regarding wing loading, power plant selection, airfoil selection, planform configuration, and myriad other considerations. All of these...

A new class of resonators has recently been proposed which has the property of having different magnifications Mx and My in orthogonal directions perpendicular to the propagation direction; the most interesting cases are those with collimated output analagous to conventional confocal unstable resonators. The Combustion Light Gas Gun, or CLGG, has been investigated for over ten years. During this time, the research has shown that the technology provides a minimum of 30% more muzzle energy than advanced solid propellent guns which translates to significant advantages in range and/or throw weight. For the Navy Barrage round fired from a 155mm bore CLGG, the predicted range is up to 200 nm, sufficient to provide effective amphibious and in-shore fire support without endangering capital assets. Since the early 1980s, a prominent and consistent conclusion of Western research on China's defense-industrial complex has been that China's defense R&D and production capabilities are rife with weaknesses and limitations. In this study, we call into question this conventional wisdom. Our research found that certain Chinese defense enterprises are designing and producing a wide range of increasingly advanced weapons that, in the short term, are relevant to the Chinese military's ability to...

Schiff (R-NM) for information regarding an alleged crash of an unidentified flying object (UFO) that occurred in the state in 1947. This publication duplicates the information provided to the Secretary of the Air Force and to the General Accounting Office (GAO). It was written as a result of Colonel Weaver's and Lieutenant McAndrew's efforts to locate the records that explain the events of July 1947 leading...

This work compiles, reviews, and discusses the available data and information on the electrical resistivity of chromium, cobalt, iron, and nickel and presents the recommended values resulting from critical evaluation, correlation, analysis, and synthesis of the available data and information. The recommended values presented are uncorrected and also corrected for the thermal expansion of the material and cover the temperature range from 1 K to above the melting point into the molten state. The...

A generalized ship motion data base applicable to set of five non- aviation ships, i.e., the DD 963, CG 26, FF 1052, FFG 7, and FF1040 was developed. This Non-Aviation Ship Motion data base is stored on the David W. Taylor Naval Ship R and D Center CDC 6700 computer disk packs. The data base consists of an extensive frequency domain data base, a time domain data base selected from the frequency domain results, as well as the computer program to access and manipulate the data as required by...

Does America need more F-14 Navy fighter jets? After 5 months of debate in Congress, the question may finally be answered by a conference committee of the House and Senate members. But the future of the aircraft, assembled on Long Island by Grumman Corporation, is likely to be decided more by old-fashioned politics than by the loftier issue of national defense needs. The hottest issue in the just-concluded fiscal 1990 defense authorization conference was whether to cancel the Navy's Long...

In this study, the effect of strain rate on the constitutive behavior and damage state of a particulate composite material under a high confining pressure was investigated. Experimental findings reveal that, for a given strain, the stress and the damage intensity are highly dependent on the strain rate. However, the critical damage intensity is insensitive to the strain rate.

Deception and surprise have been an integral part of war since the beginning of recorded history. This force multiplier continues to be used to the present time because the surprising truth is that it almost always works. A determined adversary bent on deception, and willing to invest the required time and resources, will be successful and can achieve initial surprise. Counterdeception is a difficult task, and despite America's demonstrated intelligence collection capability, will not likely...

Merrill's Marauders is the popular name given to the U.S. Army's 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), a regiment-sized unit organized and trained for long-range penetration behind enemy lines in Japanese-held Burma in World War II. The 5307th had a short history. Recruitment for the unit began on 1 September 1943, and it was disbanded on 10 August 1944. The unit did not reach India until 31 October 1943 and was only in combat in Burma from the end of February 1944 to the first days of August....

The Oblique Detonation Wave Engine (ODWE) offers a number of advantages over the Supersonic Combustor Ramjet (SCRAMJET) for hypersonic aeropropulsion. The objective of this program is to obtain data on the stability of the Oblique Detonation Wave (ODW) and to assess the applicability of the ODW to hypersonic propulsion. The program consists of the basic study of the ODW phenomenon and the design study of the test facility (Phase I), and an indepth experimental study of the ODW in a ram...

To reduce the possibility of flaming, the smoke formulation for the M8 smoke pot has been modified by the addition of a burn retardant, penterythritol (PE). These M8-PE pots were chemically characterized to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the combustion products produced with the addition of PE. Data as needed prior to material release and for incorporation into the item's Life Cycle Environmental Assessment (LCEA). Similar to other terephthalic acid (TA) based smokes, benzene,...
