This is the fourth in a series of reports on research at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories. The report covers a two-year interval, as will succeeding reports in this unclassified series. This report was written primarily for Air Force and DoD managers of research development--and more specifically, for the managers in our Headquarters office, the Office of Aerospace Research. But it is hoped that it will be of interest and value to a much broader audience. To encompass this broader...

The study focuses on containerization of a particular class of cargo- -Marine Corps mobile electric generators. Containers are considered as the transportation medium for generators in both trailer-mounted and skid-mounted configurations. Shelters compatible with container handling systems are evaluated for use in generator operation as well as transportation. Generators which are candidates for shelterization are identified by size and unit.

The K-36D is standard equipment in Russian high-performance aircraft, being rated for survivable ejections at speeds of 0-755 KEAS. In 1993, a Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) Program was initiated to evaluate the Soviet designed K-36D ejection seat. The objectives of this program were to increase USAFIUSN knowledge...

Divergence experienced during rolling maneuvers has frequently been referred to as inertial coupling. This leads to a misconception of the problems involved. The divergence experienced during rolling maneuvers is complex because it involves not only inertial properties, but aerodynamic ones as well. The material in this chapter is intended to offer a physical explanation of the more important causes of roll coupling. Coupling results when a disturbance about one aircraft axis causes a...

The mythology surrounding the 1389 Battle of Kosovo Polje, in present-day Serbia, is the foundation for the Serbian cultural identity and is a prism through which Serbs view and interpret the past, present, future. The mythology, created out of necessity to cope with Ottoman conquest and the hardships of peasant life, began with early eulogies to the Serbian knights who were defeated on the Kosovo plain. It evolved through oral folklore tradition, epic poetry, and literature while being...

The Report concluded by identifying 3 lines of continuation: (1) The influence of synoptic type upon dispersion. (2) The stability of multi-particle models used for long range transports, and (3) Casework and model intercomparisons associated with events in the Gulf. The adventitious occurrence of the Gulf oil fire plume has led the investigators to redirect the main thrust of the investigation away from 1 and 2 and towards 3, that is, studies of the spread of pollutants from Kuwait using a...

Aircraft performance, in its most general sense configuration, can be defined as the flight achievements an aircraft must execute for successful mission accomplishment. Obviously, expected performance parameters must be an integral part of the design process of an aircraft. Given certain performance expectations by the customer, the designer must make decisions regarding wing loading, power plant selection, airfoil selection, planform configuration, and myriad other considerations. All of these...

The Neutron or enhanced radiation weapon can be seen as an improvement to NATO capabilities to carry out its strategy or a technological premise for changing that strategy. Proponents of change have ignored the connectedness of all elements of theater nuclear and conventional forces for deterrence, and intra-war deterrence defense. The neutron weapon can be valuable for improving some components of strategy but cannot solve all of NATO's strategic problems. (Author)

This report represents an effort to address the request made by Representative Steven H. Schiff (R-NM) for information regarding an alleged crash of an unidentified flying object (UFO) that occurred in the state in 1947. This publication duplicates the information provided to the Secretary of the Air Force and to the General Accounting Office (GAO). It was written as a result of Colonel Weaver's and Lieutenant McAndrew's efforts to locate the records that explain the events of July 1947 leading...

In 1999, the annual Armor Conference featured a typical lineup of guest speakers, technology demonstrations, and discussion venues intended to showcase the Armor Branch and generate new ideas for its future development. The conference included a short information briefing on the status of the Future Scout and Cavalry System (FSCS). At the time, this platform was to become the primary mounted reconnaissance vehicle. The presentation proved unremarkable until the speaker mentioned the medium...

Maintaining maritime dominance against near peer adversaries will tax an already complex logistics structure that depends upon freedom of movement to sustain operations. While the U.S. Navy is proficient in delivering fuel and other materiel via underway replenishment, it relies upon a network of airports and seaports. The Combat Logistics Force, operating from these facilities, carries this materiel and moves it the last tactical mile; however, the Mark 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS)...

Since the creation of the nation state, armed forces for hire have continued to exist in addition to nation state controlled forces. However, the results from contracting armed forces have varied drastically. An infamous example is the British use of Hessian mercenaries during the American Revolution, whose tactics in the Hackensack Valley greatly alienated the populace and arguably did more harm than good. Although improper tactics are not limited to contracted forces, several steps are...

The affordable PAC-3 system upgrade approach is based on innovative, joint consolidation and integration of existing industry and government assets. Through the integrated use of a network of geographically dispersed simulation, hardware in the loop, and test facilities, the PAC-3 missile design and performance is being analyzed and verified prior to first missile flight. This process begins with the thorough and rigorous testing of missile components. It then continues with the use of...

Quantitative estimates are developed of performance levels of selected U.S. Army combat crewmembers exposed to prompt ionizing radiation from nuclear weapons. The performance levels, expressed as percentages of normal (baseline) task performance, provide information for military operational planning, combat training, and computer simulation modeling of combat crew and unit effectiveness. A methodology is described using data from two separate bodies of information; (1) acute radiation sickness...
