My 4th GD show, 40 yrs ago today. Hitch-hiked from Cleveland. Drinking age at the time was 18 in NY at the time. Caught Cleve-O & PGH too. Grate shows! I need to scoop up the Road Trips CD!

This was their first time playing the Auditorium. They were just here, in January, playing the Shea's Buffalo. Like much of this above average tour (see 10/25, 10/28, 10/31), there's a long second set, at nearly 2hrs.

First Set. Alabama is just the 3rd one, and still a challenge. You need the AUD for the lead-in tuning. Seems this is one of the longest versions; it was shortened after this. After a few average songs, the sky-cracks begin separating for Loser. Just a solid version - and check Bobby. His rhythm is also great on this Supplication. You need the AUD again for the opening measure of Althea. It's a little bit of a struggle and right before the song ends Jer repeats the last verse. Easy to Love You has the rare verse "I feel so cold but you come on like a flame". Jack Straw is an exciting set-ender, but not the tightest.

Second Set. The money set. Dancin' in the Streets is already much different than it was with Donna. It's Brent's 3rd one, and 1st great one. Everyone is in the drummers' pocket[s] and the mods are great ... right into a hot Franklin's Tower. This is '79 hyper, with Brent's Styx keys. Check how Jer plays the intro, and gets sidetracked, and starts jamming. Not 10/27 great, but hot. These '79s are arguably a bit too slick and a bit too vampy, but Bobby & Phil are great and after a few listens I came around to it. Jer is trying to give a lot to new-guy-Brent (maybe in part because of the tempo), but he doesn't always run with it. Estimated is above average due to the long jam section w/Brent. This is a whopper of a He's Gone, clocking @19min. Even with playback at the right speed it has a hypnotic, slow groove, with a sudden bridge, and then goes into a jam section that spontaneously finds the chords for Gloria (though they didn't do a prepped version, with lyrics, until '81). There's just a brief couple minutes of Space, centered on Phil. Wharf Rat is a solid one. For some weird reason, the SBD repeats 14sec of the intro (fixed on the official). A gobsmack-tidy I Need a Miracle does an awesome tranny into a super Bertha. The official release removes 51sec @2:52>3:43. The SBD just has a beat-skipping cut @2:53, where it's missing 29sec (2:53>3:21 on the AUD). The wonderful segues solidify the back nine, but the solo is something else - and only heard on the AUD. The rest is average '79 and GOGD.

SOURCES: The andrewf_79702 runs slow. The tetzeli_fix-318_34936 is better, updating the SBD. The tunings are still cut, but not by as much. It's still pitched slow, needing +1.6% for the First Set and +2% for the Second; except, from Wharf Rat on it needs 2.25% and U.S. Blues needs +2.5%. The AUD is also slow [needs +2%]. The 2nd set, sans Drums, Space, the complete Bertha, and the encore, is on Road Trips 1-1. The official release needs the same pitch adjustments, as well as some for balance.

I was in the house for this one. Great show! The shows I saw in the late 80s and 90s paled in comparison. Good times tho! Enjoy this stream.

Everyone I show this Dacin'>Franklins to agrees that it sparkles with extra energy and flair. The transition into Franklin's is flawless.

So many people love to point out the hit-or-miss nature of some periods of 80s Dead. If the guys had their struggles, at least they were playing their hearts out for fans the entire time. It's almost sad that they were so popular because they needed more off time, obviously, especially as history will reflect.

ANYWAYS, this is the potency and potential that this lineup of Grateful Dead possessed. Jerry is still playing with speed and fire. Brent, if not completely assimilated and quite as influential as he would become eventually, is really crushing.

This show will probably continue to be passed over.

HEY DAVE LEMIUEX!!! Hint. Hint. Relisten to this one. With some spiffing up its undeniably release worthy as a whole.

my first show was 12/1 @ The Stanley in Pittsburgh but this whole fall/winter swing was killer this show included. the meat and potatoes sorry vegans lol of this show is the Dancin'/Franklin's absolutely no doubt and it was a killer jam disco-ish to a real nice Fanklin's. Wish I could've seen more of this tour but couldn't even see the 11/30 show parents made me make a choice because I already had The Who tickets for 12/2 @ the arena. All in all though real decent show not so-average imho as others say great moments.

Glad there is a board, albeit a flawed one, of this excellent show - Road Trips strikes again....

Set 1 - Pretty powerful energy throughout; got to love that Jack Straw set closer - kind of a rarity, no? Do I have to bring up how lame Easy to Love You is again? OK, I won't ;)

Set 2 - Dancin' is simply FUNKED OUT - just listen to Brent go haywire on the wurlitzer or whatever that is - the transition into Franklin's is just so scathing, disco-slash crazy!

After He's Gone they roll into a fantastic, balls-out rock jam teasing Caution, Gloria, whatever - great experimentation and followed post-Space by an absolutely thunderous Wharf Rat. Show kind of meanders after this, but there is a some seriously raw, red meat in this show -

and standard performance before Drums/Space, after which they pull out all the stops for the finalé. Would maybe buy Road Trips 1.1 for that jam & other highlights, but not this whole show.

I had a blast at this show and remember it well. It was a ton of fun listening to it again at work this morning. Love this Archive! There was a great vibe and high energy in the crowd and on the stage. Probably the most memorable Jack Straw I heard the Dead play live.. An amazing second set with a stellar Franklins Tower and He's Gone... the He's Gone jam into drums is a beautiful thing.... in fact... think I'll play the second set again right now!

at about 3:25 in track 15 it sounds to me like the band plays an instrumental Gloria for a couple of minutes. The second set before drums is a smoker!

this isnt the 11/5 show, this is the 11/9 show. still good though

A hot show from a hot tour. The pre-drums second set is some of the hottest music you will ever hear!
