Billy talks a lot about Hawaii in his book but has no memory of the three Hawaii '70 shows (they did these two and came back in June for a one-off). With a bunch of other bands on the bill, it's just one set and one of TC's last shows. The next shows were at New Orleans, when the band got busted down on Bourbon Street. TC played all/part of those and then left.

The show starts a bit lifeless until the decent Mason's Children. Somehow there are no perfect Mason's (are there?) but of the 19 this one's okay, and the recording is better than most - it's a bonus on Workingman's (which for some reason tried to stick to 1/70) though the best is, IIRC, 2/14. They never get the lyrics straight - which is likely one reason it got dropped. Black Peter is the top moment; more uptempo than most and cool. Dancin' in the Streets is very flat and not particularly explorative.

Articles and ads in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin for 1/22 and 1/24/70 make it clear that there were shows only on the 23rd and 24th,
with the opening bands:
The Sun And The Moon,
September Morn,
and Pilfredge Sump,
with lights by Noah's Ark.
That is a lot of bands for a show that runs from 8pm to Midnight
p.s.-The Airplane was definitely NOT on the bill.

wish there were more tunes here, what is here is good though. masons children is probably the best ive heard it...nice work by jerry in dancing, such a different tune in the early days. cold rain and snow good too

This is the first time I've heard a coherent version of MS - I'd written it off since first hearing it many years ago.

Most of the songs are played with amazing intensity (Black Peter would get dynamically better with age) - especialy Cumberland Blues. TC's noodling is kind of nice on CB and the feel on the WMD songs is more '69 than '70 alt country.

What a clean clean recording, the cleanest Mason's I've found.

The show is Island friendly, what a tough life these guys had.-lol

This is without a doubt a classic! Sweet sound qaulity and excellent setlist. Highly reccomend this one! Cumberland Blues caught my attention.

Me and My Uncle is played differently than
I've heard it before (just a bit slower) and
I like this version better. You can tell the
crowd dug what they heard. Sound quality is
awesome given that we're talking 1970.
Pigpen does a great King Bee. Pigpen
adds that element of coolness that just rounds
out a show. Some people say that Jerry and
Pigpen are dead, I say they are not- They live
on in the music they left behind. Thank you
archive, my CD collection grew by about 1000%.
