History of Wayland Free Public Library

The major holdings of this collection consist of handwritten library trustee record books, correspondence, and minutes, as well as other printed documents and miscellaneous information from the library's establishment in 1848 to about 1977.  The collection contains some pre-history of the library: a record book of the subcription based East Sudbury Social Library (East Sudbury became Wayland in 1835), containing the Constitution of East Sudbury Social Library from 1796.  Francis Wayland, John Bu...

James S. Draper is the librarian from 1870 to 1885 starting at a salary of $150. His handwritten library committee minutes fill this entire volume. The library committee votes on such things as library expenditures, delivering books to the Cochituate branch library, printing library book catalogs,and rules for nonresident borrowing, and reports on the annual examination of books.
