The Taliban have won. Twenty years after the 2001 invasion, the U.S.-backed government in Kabul has fallen. The Afghan president has fled. Taliban leadership, which ran the country in the late 1990s, is now firmly in place within the presidential palace. But after two decades of war, tens of billions spent, hundreds of thousands of lives lost – including more than 2,300 U.S. military personnel – bigger questions have emerged: Is the cost of leaving greater than the cost of staying? And was...

After a 13-month investigation that yielded millions of documents and hundreds of hours of interviews, Congress called the chief executives from Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google to testify. And they did. In the historic hearing, the tech titans defended their companies against claims that they’re running afoul of antitrust law and using their market power to crush competition, amass data, and drive their own profits. As the internet giants face more probes from the FCC, DOJ, and a host of...

Often regarded as the bridge linking together Europe and Asia, Turkey has been part of NATO for more than 65 years. But some wonder whether NATO truly benefits from Turkey’s membership, particularly with the country’s potential turn toward authoritarianism under president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. And with the Turkish leader cozying up to Russia and China, we ask: Is Turkey still an important ally to the West? Michael Doran - Senior Fellow, Hudson Institute & Fmr. Sr. Director, National...

On diversity in America’s newsrooms, Newsweek deputy opinion editor Batya Ungar-Sargon weighs in: "To the question of diversity. Our newsrooms in America are embarrassingly, disgustingly white, okay. There's a huge problem of diversity in America's newsrooms. The reason they are so white is because in order to become a journalist today, you have to essentially come from money. That's the only way in. Journalism has become a cast over the last 100 years. You have to do a free internship...

How might coronavirus reshape geopolitics? For some, the answer is clear: China is on the rise. While Washington embraces “America First,” they argue, Beijing is stepping up to provide material assistance to struggling nations and convening global leaders. But others see a global future where China’s standing is diminished, not bolstered. They look to China’s lack of transparency around the outbreak, stringent domestic lockdown policies, and economic slowdown. This debate is presented...

The targeted killing of General Qassim Suleimani sent shockwaves around the world and sparked staunch debate about the Trump administration's "maximum pressure" campaign. Supporters argue that this strategy, which includes leaving the JCPOA and imposing harsh economic sanctions, will safeguard American interests, quell Tehran's human rights abuses, and halt the state's support of terrorist networks. But opponents see "maximum pressure" as dangerously misguided. They argue...

China is ramping up its national space industry with huge investments in next-generation technologies that promise to transform military, economic, and political realities. Against this backdrop, we ask: Would a new U.S.-China space race be good for humanity? Sign the petition to fix America's debates: https://www.change.org/fixthedebates Today’s debates have been reduced to a string of “gotcha” questions for candidates, which result in personal attacks, uninformative soundbites, rehearsed remarks and scripted rebuttals. They tell voters almost nothing that can’t be gathered from campaign ads. There is no time for depth, no payoff for nuance, no serious discussion of policy. That’s why it isn’t surprising that America is tuning out. The...
