Celebrating the 50th release on JNN I've invited some of the best (netlabel)artists from around the globe to join this massive compilationalbum. In total 52 artists joined to create the finest in what is available in experimental music these days. Much of what you hear is unreleased work with the exception of a handful. These tracks have been carefully mastered and put together to present to you a 4 CD epic journey into sound. Together with the artwork the puzzle lies ahead to find out what...

At long last it is finaly here; the successor of no-r-mal the first edition. Almost a year later down the line, but highly improved and filled with more goodies. Started on April 25th I would never have thought that this would grow as big as it did. Many bulkloads of work went into getting this compilation album out there, but it is out there now! 71 artists, 71 tracks have turned into a 6 CD!!! compilation album making for over 7 hours of listening pleasure. Today I give this to the world so...

Live recordings from digital algorhythms. This is generative glitch that walks the far boarders of experimentalism, yet its content is so smooth and delicious. Meandering between the likes of Xenakis and Ikeda, this takes on a journey of its own. And even though this may be the shortest release on Just not Normal, I fell deeply in love with this album; beware as you may too!

6 tracks of minimalist beauty, darkish atmospheres and enchanting sounds. There is a certain mystique about this release; as if tucked away far on the antarctic with but a small friendly fire. The cold breeze snuggling around the cabin comforting the loneliness that one is waited for. A place of envy perhaps it is not, but the chilled sound of 'the last day again' will certainly clasp the listeners ear placing them momentarily in the vast and cold emptiness of white; to remind us once again of...

From 1967 through 1970 my father, composer Harold Shapero, was director of the Brandeis University electronic music studio. The studio was equipped with a Buchla 100 modular synthesizer, which was at the time the state of the art. Though I was not a Brandeis student, but still in high school, my father allowed and encouraged me to work with the Buchla in the studio. I started working there when I was 14 and continued until I was 17. The portrait you see of me with the Buchla was taken (by my...

We all are nothing; and so we shall return. And from that emptiness grew Mtiful; meanderings through the field of experimental improv electronics. This album journeys into the physics of sound and its electronic behaviour, frantically trying to control that which lies beyond our touch. Like the chaos and unpredictability of nature, so this album shares of the deeper layers of life. Dare to dig the soil upon which we tread; dare to dive in the realm of a mad scientist mind called mystahr.

Digital data has a lifecycle all its own. And oddly enough, the digital lifecycle mirrors the organic. Every digital bit of data experiences: being born; fighting to survive within the world where it finds itself; interfacing with other data or with the physical world; and then inevitably--it ends. It is deleted, forgotten, or lost. Like all organic life, data has a beginning and therefore, at some point, must also experience an ending. The experimental stream of sound on this release is an...

In Greek mythology, Ixion and Tantalus were both legendary for their extreme hubris and the dire consequences that befell them as a result. Each was granted an audience with the gods, and betrayed the generosity shown to them. So many tales abound of the transgressions these two figures made against the gods that there is no one story to explain their unique fates. Yet it is precisely these unenviable fates for which they are most remembered. In its most simple form, the tale of Ixion is that...

This incarnation, mind6Spiral, resulted when Tim Walters (see e.g. JNN03) traded a night’s lodging (10 August 2008) for one hour of feeding audio from his laptop into Mike’s mixer, while Mike added his own sounds and a live audience on StillStream.com listened. It was a fair trade. Mindspiral Tim Walters

Following his 'Free translation' on Vaatican Records, Alexander once again raises the bar on his soundwork. Big bold and beautiful, yet timid deep and full of emotion. JNN is proud to present the latest work from Alex Lisovsky, aka Djet Sound collages on a theme (and without theme) of various old (and new) fairy tales, parables and legends... The second collaborative work from Alexander Kibanov to appear on Just not Normal and the shortest album thusfar to have appeared on JNN as well. But length never says anything about quality or its lacking off. Born June 6, 1992, Alexander Kibanov is an experimental music artist and composer from Antarctica. He has released under various pseudonymes (such as Earth Incubator, Headless Kamikaze, Illnathix) over one hundred of solo and collabarotive works (with many artists as diverse as GX...

What are you saying; you never heard of Khate before. What rock have you been living under? One of the finer mistresses of the world of experimental electronics resurfaces with a brand new album! After the longest absence from music making and as she claims âthe craziesâ this fine fine artist returns and boy are we in for a treat. From one of our back and forth emails: âBut! There was an interview the other day in which, if I remember correctly Phillip stated that he was going to concentrate less on the experimental free releases. Well since you are reading these words here you are clearly recognizing that the great Phillip Wilkerson has yet done it again. Right before your eyes is the latest experimental release from Phillip that can be regarded as a blessing for your wanton ears. If youâve heard some of the previous JNN releases by Phillip I can but say, the man...

Recorded live at the Canibal Canniche festival, held in Berlin May 2nd 2010 Mastered by Final Cut Are you prepared to take on a journey of live and improv’ed experimentalism. Are you willing to open your ears and mind for the unusual that took place live on stage. This French artist has before released a few albums on the Belgium Entity netlabel of which my first encounter was with the ’2 humans in a cage with their everything box’. YES! You are certainly reading this right. A brand new catalog has rissen amidst the fireworks that is called Just not Normal. IMC is short for Intelligent Machinery Compilations! And for those who know the background of how Just not Normal came about they will know it is birthed from NTNS radio. And long before NTNS radio the second edition as we know it today came about there once was NTNS radio before. From late 2004 till early 2007 NTNS was around already and back in those days it was...

If the world of lo-fi IDM could find more oompf, this would be the place. A wealth of toys has been intergrated into these 10 tracks that will make your mind swirl and your body ache for more. Ofcourse it may just as well be possible that youâre not into such degraded toynoises. If that is the case, you certainly got lost and trapped in a world you neednât be in. Most likely you will thoroughly enjoy this recording of two giants in the world of experimental improvâed music: Ayato and Kortane...

It was some time ago that I received an email from Pavel from Minsk (Belarus). He came to JNN through word of Zhang JW of the great Bypass netlabel. As Pavel explains his music displays the modern technogenic world and intertwines also the Internet and cinema. This piece youâre about to hear is indeed a world of technogenics that intertwines the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. JNN has previously released albums that work from the poetry of some famed poets and writers, but this release takes it...

It was somewhere in 2009 that through NTNS radio I first heard of this Hungarian artist. I had played an album from him that was released on Amduscias Records and I loved that to bits. The silence after that settled in untill early August Szentpétery contacted me and asked me if I was interested in releasing his latest album. Without hearing even a single tone I welcomed him onboard and new that I would be proud of this fine fine release. And so it did turn out to be; this 12 track album...

One of the sets of that evening was from Jack Hertz. And Iâve been listening to it now for the last hour. There is but one thing missing in all this; images. Exotic sound-scapes from the far reaches of the Whithersoever, a vast multiplicity of universes. Recorded in dynamic Quaquaphonic stereo! Feralcatscan is science fiction, a romantic walk through a dystopian wonderland, that strange array of lights hovering in the twilight, the mad scientist caressing peculiar mechanical finery, the sound of countless worlds falling into oblivion. This album was played well over a month ago on NTNS radio and stirred a great big vibe inside. Luckily Julia Mangore has obliged in Just not Normal providing for a more permanent home for this radical album. Experimental IDM I’d say, but her myspace page says it all: Psychical sonic, phonic, sometimes tonic experiments by Julia Mangore and OctobrineXIII, since 2009.

With the utmost honor Just not Normal presents the fantastic music of the Spanish Carlos Suarez. Exporing the poetry of Artaud, this masterpiece was originally intended as a physical CD release, but as Carlos said; he is more interested in exploring new sounds rather then setting out to find a label to be published. We could not have been more proud to have him sign on for this grand release. Darkness has set and settles in your ears! About the poet/poem: (only in Spanish) 2.- Vulgus veritatis...

Have you ever been in contact with the music of the Cagey House? Cagey House is Baltimore's Dave Keifer. Producing primarily instrumental music, since 1999, and he also experiments with sound collage. If you frequent netlabels such as this one, then undoubtedly you have been in touch with the music of this collaging meister. His work has been described as "synth-post-pop-punk-psyche-hypno-exotica." For as long as I can remember I have seen his releases from various corners around the...
