We must recognize that “pleasure is a measure of freedom,” that’s the first ambition writer, healer, and teacher adrienne maree brown has for her book and guide, “Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good.” In our movements and communities, we’re constantly trying to find ways to measure liberation and freedom, and love seems like as good a yardstick as any. What would it look like to love without fear? adrienne has joined us on the show before to discuss organizing as science...

1980’s Art – turbulent and provocative – arose out of the AIDS epidemic. Two major art exhibits on view in New York City – one universally-acclaimed a must-see, the other overwhelmingly-anticipated: Peter Hujar: Speed of Life (Morgan, through May 20) and David Wojnarowicz: History Keeps Me Awake at Night (Whitney, July 13 – Sept 30). The artists’ lives were singular and intertwined: personal and political, formal and furious, playful and profane. What do this Art and the lives...

On January 19 and 24, New Orleans police and Louisiana state police raided eight strip clubs on Bourbon Street, the city's tourism center. Five years ago this weekend, New Orleans nearly drowned. It didn't look that way at first -- the eye of Hurricane Katrina hit to the east, but the levee breaks that followed took out entire neighborhoods. The water didn't kill New Orleans. But the private solution approach to public problems almost did. People for whom no rising economic tides had ever lifted their boat, were left to fend for themselves. Concerned that the bill would further erode the civil liberties they enjoy under the one country two systems principle, many Hong Kongers took to the streets. All these months later, the city’s chief executive Carrie Lam has withdrawn...
