Hand Knit Stockings
Well preserved example of what appears to be handknit stockings. Star rating is based on condition.
Slight irregularities between each stocking points to them not being machine woven and then cut to shape. However, small sock/stocking looms had been developed, so they could have been machine knit that way.
Stitches are visible in image. Gauge is small for contemporary knitting, maybe 8 to 10 stitches per inch, but would have more usual for hanknitters at that time.
To me, stockings appear to have a very slight halo more common to wool than cotton. Off white, dark cream color looks like unbleached wool.
