Thorne Dreyer’s guests are David Fenton and Allen Young. Fenton is the author of The Activist’s Media Handbook: Lessons From Fifty Years as a Progressive Agitator. Allen Young has reviewed Fenton’s book for The Rag Blog. Fenton, Young, and Dreyer first met while working with Liberation News Service (LNS) in New York City in the late ‘60s. LNS served as the AP of the underground press movement. As a public relations consultant, David Fenton has worked with the likes of Abbie Hoffman, John Sinclair, Al Gore, Nelson Mandela, MoveOn.org, and climate change groups. For more than five years he has pioneered the use of PR, social media, and advertising techniques for social change. Fenton started out as an acclaimed photojournalist.
Allen Young was a pioneer in the ‘60s underground press era. Before joining LNS he worked at The New York Times. Young has lived in rural North Central Massachusetts since 1973 and is an active member of several local environmental organizations. He has been an activist-writer in the New Left and gay liberation movements and has been a frequent contributor to The Rag Blog. His 2018 autobiography, Left, Gay & Green: A Writer’s Life was reviewed at The Rag Blog by Jonah Raskin.
