[laughter] i took this picture at the little bighorn national monument. i'm looking at what is now known as last stand hill. you can see a fence surrounding 40 graves. those are the soldiers who died around the hill along with most of custer's family members. on the other side of the hill is a relatively new native memorial to the lakota and cheyenne war yores who died. there's a new campaign to mark those sites. i got my back to the little bighorn valley where the village was located. when i was there, i attended a reenactment at the property of a family who owns the land where the lakota village was located. you can see the fan stands there. that's the little big horn river. it's a winding waterway. every spring it changes as the run and snow melt makes its jump boundaries. that cut bank in the distance is basically the direction of last stand hill. this is a picture i took of the reenactment. the riding schools of all involved were very impressive, and it's just amazing to be there

he's worked well with kay bailey hutchison, the co-manager of the bill and we've made significant progress. we have -- have just a few amendments that they're trying to work a way to the end of this. hopefully we can work out an agreement to complete this legislation maybe as early as tomorrow morning sometime. we are -- if we can -- he we have the first cloture vote tomorrow and we'll see what happens after that. we're -- we're -- everyone should understand it's wednesday and tomorrow's thursday and i know a lot of people have arrangements because we have a homework period the following week and we want to go home if at all possible late tomorrow night or early friday morning, but we can't do that if there's work left to be done on this bill. so i hope that we can work something out so we can finish tomorrow. it would certainly be a doable thing. we know what we have left. the -- the work on the different issues have been extremely difficult and time consuming, but we've settled most everything here on the senate floor as we're supposed to do. there will be no more roll call votes tonight

and it's been worked on a very, very long time by myself and an extraordinarily wonderful senator kay bailey hutchison, who's -- i call her cochair of the commerce committee, because she is. and people have operated in good faith, and we've had a lot of scrums and huddles about on the senate floor but that's the way legislation probably needs to work. it's a very complicated bill but it's a bill that i think that we will get cloture on and people should actually be very anxious to vote for when it comes to final passage. and i -- i will give a talk about that but i just remind people again that we have a air traffic control system which is so antiquated that there are actually very many near misses in the sky because we're using a radar system and planes often come very close to running into each other on the tarmac. it's a very old system, a 50-year-old system, and this bill will fix that and make it safer for people to travel and more planes can take off and f fly. so i hope that we invoke cloture at 2:00 and then we'll continue to work on the bill. it's important for america and it's impo
