ktvu's jade hernandez is live in san jose with the details. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we're live in front of the santa clara county superior court. two things are expected to happen here this morning. one, a rally in front of the courthouse and a preliminary hearing inside. william lynch has already pleaded not guilty to attacking retired priest. but he is expected to go before a judge for his preliminary hearing today. he alleges the priest molested him and his brother when they were boys. he's accused of tracking the priest down in a retirement home and beating him. lynch was charged with felony assault. he has said in prior interviews he wants to use the trial to shame the priest publicly. there are those who agree with lynch and supporters of lynch are also expected to meet in san jose today in front of the same courthouse. lynch will face a judge. supporters say he was a very active priest and portrayed them. supporters say they want to expose the system which protects predators. the 65-year-old former priest has deni

ktvu's kraig debro joins us live. he's in san francisco. >> most of the homeless shelters in san francisco closed its doors. we're at a recycling center. during the day people try to earn a little money for necessities like food. this is the church on gary and franklin. two hours ago 70 men who spent the night there were preparing to head out into the rain. they face a lot of challenges. one man shows us how he deals with a pair of holey shoes. after putting his socks on he rolls plastic bags over the socks. the church is one of four winter shelters. >> i would be out on the street and catching a cold because of the rain and would probably and up in the hospital with pneumonia. >> reporter: even when you have a place to stay, it's not a healthy place. that man said some of the places could be ripe with unhealthy conditions such as bed bugs. i can tell you from now until back at 8:00 we're in another location. the temperature has dropped dramatically. we just checked. it feels like 43. it's actually 49. you can feel th

ktvu's sal castaneda is live now. sal a lot of drivers learned the hard way just how treacherous the bay area streets could be. >> reporter: the chp is reporting 30 collisions so far. this morning it was 30 to 40 collisions an hour as people struggled to drive in this type of weather. this morning's commutes were terrible and the wrecks continue to come in the day with collisions on every bay area roadway before noon. people blame bad driving. >> people lose their minds when it rains. >> i think one accident, they see they get nervous and they don't realize they're going to possibly create the next one. >> reporter: this hit and run crash in san leandro sent one person to the hospital. too many drivers don't change the way they drive in the rain. >> when the weather changes whether it's heavy fog, windy weather or rain the driver needs to adjust their behavior pattern for the given conditions. that means slowing down, perhaps to below the posted speed limit. >> reporter: nearly everyone we spoke with had an opinion as

live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time now 5:03. more than a dozen bay area war veterans are homeless this morning. they were chased into the streets by a fast moving fire in east palo alto. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live to tell us if some of those veterans actually had to jump to save their lives. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, dave. as you take a look behind me you can see just how extensive the damage is from this fire. it started back in the kitchen and then worked its way all through the house. you can see how the flames left along side of the roof here and then there's a window right over here on the second story. and this is where a man actually jumped when this fire was going strong. now according to fire officials, two more people jumped out the back window to escape the flames. you can imagine how chaotic the scene was here at this home in east palo alto. it's a facility that houses more than a dozen veterans. firefighters threw applauders when they arrived in order to save people trapped yapsters. o

ktvu kraig debro has the very latest. he's in san francisco now with this very mysterious case. >> reporter: good morning, dave. an investigation into a mysterious death. supposedly it all started here. yesterday afternoon a maid trying to clean a hotel room found a womans body inside one of these hotels on lumbar. before that a car associated with two missing people from riverside county near palm springs was discovered on devil's slide. the car was associated with or owned by bill and colleen waterman. they found no traces of either couple but they conducted a search for a missing person off devil's slide in san mateo county. this morning that search is set to resume. i did talk to a sheriffs deputy this morning. they say they will resume the search. it's not yet a recovery phase. the man is trying to hide from authorities. he's a rather not suspect but a person of interest. but in talking to the deputy said that area survivable. so even if the person fell from that area he would be able to live out there for a couple d

ktvu's claudine wong is there. claudine, what's it doing to traffic? >> reporter: well, sal, it is backed up traffic quite a bit on the highway 4 connector. if you take a look you can see a long line of cars. highway patrol and firefighters basically took a chain saw and they cut off all the huge pieces so they could get traffic moving again. they're waiting for cal trans to come out and clean it up and get this to really back up and moving. it's really done its damage. i want to take you here where the tree basically toppled over. we assume it's the heavy rains. when it came down the highway patrol says a couple cars ran into it but no one was injured. they cut off the heavy branches and tossed everything to the side. if you take a look you can see what they tossed over to the side to get it out of the way of the roadway. at this time we're just waiting for cal trans to come out and clean it up. highway patrol watching the situation. again, state road 4 at the 80 interchange. this is 80 traffic moving okay here. if you're coming from state road 4, it

ktvu's kraig debro joins us now from novato where some of those kids go to school. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. in fact i talked to the principal earlier this morning. he tells me the airports of the students there are coming to get their kids whether they're sick or not. one of three students at walker creek ranch just a few miles west of here. no telling how many fifth graders from this school are actually sick, but according to the principal at the camp, most are already on their way home. again, just talked to the principal at walker creek camp in west marin county this morning. he told me the kids began getting sick yesterday afternoon. the ranch has been operating since 1963 as an outdoor residential science camp. the principal says it's not unusual for a bunch of fifth and sixth graders sleeping and eating together to pass a virus, but then the number of sick children, chaperons and staff members started to grow. that and the symptoms forced the school officials to call paramedics. >> we had what we believe was probably some kind of vi

ktvu's jade hernandez live at norman y. ma theta san jose international airport with more of a potential name change. what's going on, jade. >> reporter: dave, it could be a longer name. city officials want people to know that san jose's international airport is the true gateway to silicon valley. you don't have to fly into san francisco or oakland. no one is quite sure how to do that. so a committee today meets to discuss putting silicon valley in the name so everyone can see the connection. the discussion is to turn the san jose international airport name to the norman y. san jose silicon valley international airport. it's a mouthful and doesn't necessarily roll off the tongue. the struggling airport recently completed a $1.3 billion upgrade last summer. the name change is one of the ways the airport could spur business. since 2008 san jose's airport has lost a quarter of its passengers and a third of scheduled flights. talk of outsourcing police and fire protection. and remaining flights can be pricey compared to the oth
