a libyan government says saif al arab gadhafi died and moammar gadhafi and his wife were in the house but are still alive and three of his grandchildren were purportedly killed. nate toe said it did hit a command and control building but not confirming any of the deaths. frederik, what's the reaction there tonight? >> reporter: massive demonstrations at the compound in the heart of tripoli. we heard also massive gunfire all throughout town that seems to come in direct reaction, that happened right after a press conference earlier tonight where the libya spokesperson announced in fact the libyan government is saying saif al arab gadhafi was killed in that air strike. we don't have any independent confirmation, only the libyan government. nato for its part is saying this was a precision air strike on a known command and control facility. we were able to tour that site a little earlier after the air strike happened and it seemed this was a compounds inside a residential area and munitions used in that air strike seemed to be very heavy munitions and did leave a very deep crater. it seeme

do you take it in there, perhaps target people you want out of office like moammar gadhafi? >> well, it's tough. the question is how might tonight's developments impact developments in libya? i mean it's very hard to know. that's a crystal ball that would be very hard to look into. it's like a nine-leve. you have so many variables. again i i the key is you don't want the lib -- i think the key is you don't want the libyan thing to turn into something like algeria where you have a huge insurrection. you want it to be about libyan i understand pen and freedom and dem creation -- independence and freedom and democracy. if you're an american you don't want it to become about islamic extremism. that's really the critical foreign policy question for this administration. >> alan, do you think it's important for the united states to make gadhafi look like a non- presidential leader? senator lindsey graham said today on fox news sunday he believes he's a legitimate legal target because he is the head of the military. >> i think again that's a very difficult disputed question, but i t

but will that be enough to stop moammar gadhafi? michael holmes is here to go beyond the headlines and deeper into the case against the libya dictator and what would this mean if they had actually issued some sort of warrant for his arrest? >> well, to be honest, not a lot. they're going to ignore it. let's talk about the icc for a second. this is an inspection organization, not part of the united nations, although the u.n. does refer cases to it. it's located in the netherlands, established specifically to address cases of war crimes, that sort of thing in the global community. their request is for warrants, not only for moammar gadhafi, but that guy right there, that's his son. also, his brother-in-law, one of the intelligents. the icc says there is clear evidence they committed crimes against humanity in this fight that's been going on for so long now. but yeah, when you think about the icc, not in its ten-year history has it completed one single trial. so it's symbolic at the moment. >> so how have these trials gone in the past?
