america. all these different places so what's very important is people were not isolated. people were sharing ideas and these ideas fundamentally the implemented them and created new economies. >> you teach sociology, not economics you are an economist by training? >> i was a math major at one point, like math. on a sociologist. sociologists are interested in the numerous things, one of which is neoliberalism is interesting to sociologists because the policies are being implemented worldwide. people want to know where do these ideas come from but people also want to know the consequences of these ideas on the world. what's happened to people where they are implemented and they are interested in how people react. they're interested in the social movements that emerge that are going against neoliberalism for other systems. this is evolving right now in different parts of the world. you say they are being implemented. where are they being implemented and do you see it long-term lasting long-term?

there are different traditions for this across latin america. many hispanics in the u.s. incorporate their roman catholic faith in day of the dead observances. kim lawton has more. >> reporter: in many communities, dÍa de los muertos, the day of the dead, is a joyful public event, with parades celebrating the belief that, for this one day every year, the spirits of loved ones have returned. families often hold private observances as well. >> we are in a festive mode right now. it's a party. >> reporter: in rockville maryland, rocio and luis bermudez incorporate their roman catholic faith with their mexican-american traditions, building a special altar in their home. on the altar they place pictures of their deceased family members and a portrait of the virgin of guadalupe. candles are lit to help the spirits find their way down from heaven. water is put out to replenish the thirsty souls after their long journey. and since it's a party, the altar is decorated with colorful papers and treats. >> the mango, the water, the tequila -- it's all an enticement so that they will

you go to these big cities across europe and even asia and latin america now, you are seeing, they are jumping ahead of us. >> susie: i was talking to tom friedman the other day about his book that used to be us. he said historically the key driver of america's economic success was its superior infrastructure. and now we don't centre that competitive. can we restore our roads and rails and bridges? and if so, what will it take to do that? >> well, first of all, we just have to spend more money on it, as simple as that. part of that has to be, no one wants to increase the gasoline tax, but you can't have the same gasoline tax. same 18.4 cents. that needs to be increased but no politicians want to do it because they are afraid they won't get voted in. we should get the private sector to invest in the. public private partnership are a big part of what other countries are doing. they are doing a lot of it in europe, a lot in latin america, u.k., canada is doing where they have private entities come in and spend their money building this infrastructure so the government is not going in debt

the opportunities are seen, really, in asia, still, and certainly in latin america, in brazil in particular, lots of opportunities still from a growth standpoint. >> tom: as you do some planning and your clients are doing planning where are they seeing some of the biggest risks in 2012? >> we really come back to three things we try to help our clients understand. one what is the impact of your performance, balance sheet strength and volatility. clients are trying to understand the tradeoff between not just earnings but the volatility of the earnings. when you think about the tragedies in japan, the tsunami and the earthquake, what that really created of a global supply chain challenge for clients around the world. that created volatility. >> tom: greg, thank you so much. greg case, the c.e.o. of aon. >> tom, it's been a pleasure. thank you very much. here's what we're watching for tomorrow: quarterly results from chevron, cigna and merck. we'll also see september personal income and spending numbers. also tomorrow, the u.s. economy is growing and europe may solve its debt problem, but where

the people in latin america don't have to know anything about why the demand went up. who is it who is going to pay the higher price. the price itself transmits the information that graphite is scarcer than it was and more in demand. and if you go back to the pencil thing, what brought all of these people together was an enormous complex structure of prices. the price of graphite, the price of lumber, the price of rubber. the wages paid to the laborer who did this, and so on. the marvelous example of how you can get a complex structure of cooperation and coordination, which no individual planned. there was nobody who sat in the central office and sent an order out to -- russia, out to malaysia, produce one more thimble of rubber. or sent a signal. it was a market that coordinated all this without anybody having to know all of the people involved. >> how many times have you told that pencil story? >> well, i really haven't told it that many times. we told, i told it in the book. but i think this is the third time. >> you're living in san francisco, where we are. >> yes.
