>> no, never. >> how big a problem is this for newt gingrich? >> anderson, i think this is neither a tempest more a teapot. i think there's any number of people who have worked for these companies and given advice to them, which is what newt acknowledged he did. he said he didn't lobby for them. i think it's problematic the 2008 interview where he said president obama should return the money. obviously that's a little inconsistent with him keeping the money. but on the day that the debt topped $15 trillion, who newt gingrich worked for i don't think is a significant issue in the debate. there's a lot bigger issues this country is wrestling with. >> hilary, there's nothing wrong with lobbying if that's what he was doing. is this a big deal? >> of course it is because it piles on top of year after year of newt gingrich's sort of saying one thing and doing another. and this just proves it. you know, for two years he made it his number one priority to trash president obama and barney frank and other democrats for their handling of freddie mac and fa

it may as well be newt gingrich. the reason this puts him in the crosshairs, though, he says he's more conservative than mitt romney, and that requires a very close examination of his own record, and there is a question whether he's more conservative. newt gingrich supported t.a.r.p., he supported freddie mac. whether he lobbied or not, we know he got paid a million dollars by them. so is he as conservative as mitt romney? who knows. we'll go through his record now line by line by line. >> chris? >> i think at this point, newt is doing what he should do, which is dnc has come out with this attack ad questioning mitt romney. and as a result of that, i think what newt is doing is starting to pile on. and i think actually that that is a smart strategy. now, to the question as to whether or not he is more conservative than mitt romney, i think the answer to that is probably yes. however, the caveat is it depends on which mitt romney we're talking about, which is why a lot of conservatives, myself included, actually don't

what about this rise of newt gingrich? >> look, they've been look for the un-romney for a long time. eric wrote a blog the other day that i wouldn't agree with him on issues, but completely right in its analysis of romney. he's not authentically conservative. he's out there trying to become president according to a business plan. doesn't seem to believe in anything but himself. newt gingrich is the next up as the un-romney. republican pros, some of whom i know and talk to, tell me they're terrified of the thought of him being the nominee. they think he's a sure loser. but, you know, this is going to go on for a little while. i think in the end it is rom fee. i think eric was right about that with he wrote it. i think it is romney. romney's getting collateral damage in this process. there's a new ppp poll in ohio. as he goes through this process, people in the general electorate are coming to doubt his authenticity. >> wow. >> that's a serious implication. on top of the 25% ceiling that mitt romney's got, he can't seem to b

let's just talk a little bit about newt gingrich because newt gingrich seemed to be the guy that's benefiting from cain's problems. but will that last? >> well, he is certainly becoming the alternative to mitt romney at the right time. we're now five weeks away from the voting beginning in iowa with the caucuses. and this is the time if you are going to surge to the head of the pack that you want to do it. some polls show sort of the cain support, if cain were to drop out of the race, you're right, that gingrich would certainly benefit from that, but there is some romney supporters there, too, who will end up going with mitt romney. newt gingrich, though, right now has emerged as the viable alternative to mitt romney as this race heads into the voting season. and it's unclear if that, too, will be a flavor of the month or if he'll be able to sustain that. i have a sense that what he's going to have to prove here first is that he can withstand withering attacks from the romney campaign. the one thing that every other rick perry, michele bachmann, herman cain, the others we saw rise to the top,

you can see now newt gingrich. that was first time newt gingrich on top and mitt romney in second place, the former massachusetts governor, but that four-point margin for gingrich all tied up when you take into account the sampling error. you have seen his numbers fade over the last few weeks and surged earlier this fall and allegations of sexual harassment from the 1990s. rick perry, the texas governor, remember he was the frontrunner at one point back in september. everybody else in single digits. what about iowa? the first state, take a look, this is a poll by american research group. this came out a couple days ago, as well. gingrich number one and romney second and you can see right there ron paul the congressman from texas at 16% in third place. remember, both these polls, hala, conducted before our debate on tuesday. maybe that debate had an impact and a lot of these debates had impacts on the polls and one reason newt gingrich has surged. >> made comments on amnesty for some illegal immigrants and that coul
