you wouldn't expect many people to be talking about newt gingrich. they wanted to know more about him. is he different? has he changed? is he someone we could seriously look at? newt gingrich himself has told me and others, he may not survive the next few weeks of vetting, but if he does, he has emerged as a powerful and potentially upset rival to mitt romney. he's getting a lot of -- there's some excitement about him and mitt romney needs to bring some of that magnetism back to his own campaign. look at the polls, what we've seen here in the last few days. newt gingrich has now moved ahead in iowa. he is second in new hampshire. he surged in new hampshire. second to romney. he has opened up a lead in south carolina of some 15 points. there's a poll out of florida today, these are early, poll out of florida today shows newt gingrich up by 24 in florida. if he were to sweep all those states except new hampshire, he'd be hard to beat. this may not last. as we've seen, it's mercurial in republican primaries. there's something going on that we can recogn

but talk about newt gingrich. for those of us who have worked alongside him like me and for someone like you that's worked with him, he can at times be inspiring, but more often than not can just be maddening. >> it's really true. i just finished reading isaacson's biography of steve jobs. and he describes the reality distortion field that jobs had around him. that if you were talking to him, no matter what you came in thinking, by the time you finished, you agreed with jobs no matter how weird it sounded at the time he was saying it. and newt had the same thing around him. when you're in the room with him -- we've seen him give a speech. his comedic timing is great, he knows a lot of stuff, he cites not only the author of a book but the page it's on. and so he does -- like jobs he creates this reality distortion field. i think the difference is th that -- that with newt it doesn't -- there's no ipod at the other end of it. >> but if he does create the ipod, he holds it up and you think, this is the most remarkabl

newt gingrich has shown that cain's problems with women have emerged. if cain were to go, where would your support go to? 37% said newt would be my number -- newt would be 37%. romney will be second. michelle bachmann would be third with 13% of his supporters going to her and rick perry 12%. you just feel differently according to the public policy poll. >> but think of the dynamic of iowa. because that's really where this shakeout is going to occur. right now, you have gingrich in first place at iowa way up there and then you have a tightly bunched field for second place involving gingrich -- involving romney, bachmann, and paul. and a little bit of perry but mainly those three. more or less tied for second place. so it would not take a large number of votes to move bachmann up to a solid second place finish. if at that point she's ahead of romney but behind gingrich and a strong second, it really could put her into the field so i'm kind of looking at alternatives. i think we're being too quick to narrow this to a two-way race. >> all right. now, i got

this week we wanted to focus a little on newt gingrich. we're hearing a lot more about the former house speaker's plan as he emerges at the front-runner in some polls. his plan includes those three points we mentioned but what else? scrap a state and capital gains taxes completely. he wants to extend the bush tax cuts and he wants to give voters the option, the option, for a 15% flat tax on income. you remember, rick perry had something similar. 20% optional flat tax on income. also he wants to balance the budget. he wants to break up fannie mae and freddie mac, it's a little controversial. remember, gingrich has taken a lot of heat over the money. more than $1.5 million he earned, or his company earned from consulting work with freddie mac. reform the federal reserve and limit power and switch to something called the lean six sigma to manage our government. what's that? a cult business management technique useed by many fortune 500 companies. it would mean in the government cutting the fat, firing underfiring employee, seeking to strict b

newt gingrich is out there. all of the guys are continuing forward but once you make that first step and say that you're having second thoughts about whether you can continue, that is going to have a negative effect whether you actually make that choice or not. >> does it seem anybody can benefit from this? it has been the i'm not mitt romney sweepstakes but can he actually benefit from this? >> the question for him is where will his supporters go to after this? the question is probably will they go to gingrich or not? any of the people out there who are supporting herman cain would not vote for mitt romney because they want the candidate they believe is truer to the conservative base than romney is. so, for gingrich, this could not come at a better time for him. he's been surging in the polls. the debate performance over the past few weeks have given him a boost and for herman cain, this is a pretty make-or-break situation for him. >> thank you for joining us, felicia. it will be a lot of fun as the campaign se

let's just talk a little bit about newt gingrich because newt gingrich seemed to be the guy that's benefiting from cain's problems. but will that last? >> well, he is certainly becoming the alternative to mitt romney at the right time. we're now five weeks away from the voting beginning in iowa with the caucuses. and this is the time if you are going to surge to the head of the pack that you want to do it. some polls show sort of the cain support, if cain were to drop out of the race, you're right, that gingrich would certainly benefit from that, but there is some romney supporters there, too, who will end up going with mitt romney. newt gingrich, though, right now has emerged as the viable alternative to mitt romney as this race heads into the voting season. and it's unclear if that, too, will be a flavor of the month or if he'll be able to sustain that. i have a sense that what he's going to have to prove here first is that he can withstand withering attacks from the romney campaign. the one thing that every other rick perry, michele bachmann, herman cain, the others we saw rise to the top,

herman cain's loss in the polls is newt gingrich's gain. since the last insider advantage iowa poll three weeks ago today, herman cain dropped 13 points and newt gingrich gained 13 points. that poll has newt gingrich way out ahead of the field in iowa. similarly in the latest rasmussen poll in iowa, again, three weeks ago, to last week, herman cain dropped 15 points and newt gingrich gained 23 points. looking at the overall national polls is sort of interesting for the atmospherics of the race. maybe it's helpful for fund-raising. you have to look state by state in order to get a true sense of who might win the nomination because we choose the nominees state by state and state by state the same principle for now seems to be holding. when cain drops, gingrich gains. in new hampshire, a rasmussen poll, a conservative leaning poll, we've seen over the last month herman cain dropping by 12 points, newt gingrich rising by 16 points. public policy polling which is a left leaning firm, they took a really interesting approach to this question. they
