craig skalar is joining us live from children's hospital in oakland. >>craig: it is a sad story. the family was holding out hope that the young boy would be able to survive. it appears according to the family attorney that it will be ending life support as of 1:00 p.m.. no tests have shown any brain activity according to the attorney. that means this could be the answer. the boy was shot two weeks ago, there was a rap video being sought in an area near oakland. cystine bullets were sprayed, targeting someone else but unfortunately he was hit in the head as well as six other people injured including his father. so far police say no suspects have been arrested. there have been some persons of interest but that is all. the family is hoping that harm could make it to his second birthday on december 28th but again, they will be disconnected life-support at children's hospital. >>justine: a press conference out of virginia tech just wrapped up. police are now saying that the gunman who killed himself acted alone in the murder of a campus police officer. he took the life of police offic

our guest today is craig shirley. greatest president of shirley and bannister public affairs, a government relations and marketing firm. he has written for the "washington post," "los angeles times," "washington times," conservative digest, "the weekly standard," many other publications. he previously authored "reagan's revolution: the untold story of the campaign that started it all." that was the first book detailing reagan's pivotal 1976 challenge to president ford and republican primaries. and he also authored "rendezvous with destiny: ronald reagan and the campaign that changed america." for the 1980 campaign really the behind the scenes story of that run for the white house. you will note there is a consistency in craig's books. rendezvous in this are both very well researched, although this one was over about 15 months. and this one is only about 31 days. you're getting very more detailed. we are pleased to have with us today, we'll do some questions out there and then open it up to the audience for anything ou

his associate, craig symonds is professor emeritus of the u.s. naval academy and former naval officer. he is a very famous on these grounds because his wife worked here for many years and craig was a volunteer cross country coach. my favorite of all his books is lincoln and his admirals' which i am going to use in the fall semester for my class. it won the lincoln prize which is exceedingly prestigious in the field of the civil war. he also has written the best biography of joseph johnson and patrick clayborn. our third participant is annette gordon-reed who received her law degree from harvard and had a youthful fascination with thomas jefferson. she has written several books on sally hammons and her third major book is andrew johnson. annette gordon-reed has a string of awards that would occupy the bulk of our sessions so i can't quite do it. she is a professor of history and law and recipient of the national book award, the pulitzer prize, macarthur genius award, on and on and on. an extraordinarily accomplished individual. let me start by pas

our guest today is craig shirley. craig is president of shirley and banister public affairs, a government relations and marketing firm. he has written for "the washington post", the los angeles times, the washington times, conservative digest, the weekly standard, many other publications. he previously authored reagan's revolution, the untold story of the campaign that started it all. that was the first book detailing reagan's pivotal 1976 challenge to president ford in the republican primaries. and he also authored rendezvous with destiny: ronald reagan and the campaign that changed america for the 1908 campaign -- 1980 campaign revealing the behind the scenes story of that run for the white house. you will note there is a consistency in craig's books -- [laughter] rendezvous and this are both very well researched although this one was over about 15 month months, and this one's only about 31 days. you're getting very more detailed. we are pleased to have him with us today. we'll do some questions up here, and then we

craig melvin was in the courtroom today. he joins us live from there. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. it was flat out stunning this morning. we had been expecting to hear from a handful of the alleged victims here at the courthouse. as you mentioned, three minutes, roughly three minutes after the preliminary hearing started, there was a side bar and then all of a sudden we heard that jerry sandusky and his attorney had decided to forego that preliminary hearing. over the week the attorney that we have seen and heard from so very much over the past month said this preliminary hearing, what happened. just yesterday he said the preliminary would happen. apparently there was a conversation between amendola and the prosecution yesterday afternoon. the prosecution assured him that they would not seek to raise the $250,000 bail, and amendola learned that he would not be able to ask serious questions of the witnesses. by that i mean he would not be able to really go after the credibility of some of those witnesses. so he decided

craig boswell takes us back. 2011 started off on a somber note in washington. just three days after being sworn in by newly minted house speaker john boehner, arizona representative gabrielle giffords was shot in the head outside of a grocery store in tucson. >> a shooting at the safe way. >> reporter: six others died in the attack. giffords was there to meet with constituents. bystanders tackled the suspected gunman, jared loughner. >> he has a troubled past, i can tell you that. >> reporter: the shooting brought a brief moment of unity to the congress. giffords made a surprise return to the house floor in august voting in favor of raising the nation's debt ceiling. the measure passed with about 10 hours remaining before a potential u.s. default. >> we have seen in the past few days that washington has the ability to focus when there is a timer ticking down. >> reporter: within days, standard and poor downgraded the credit rating to double a plus. >> it's about the difficulty of all sides in finding, you know, a consensus around fiscal policy choices now and i
