here in aurora, colorado. we're following two developing angles to this horrifying story this morning. we're expecting police to release the names of all 12 victims killed in the shooting very soon, just minutes from now, and we're waiting for a police briefing that is expected to happen in the next half hour or so. and right now, investigators are at the apartment of james holmes, the suspected gunman. it is full, we're told, of booby traps and explosives and trip wires. they may actually send in robots to gather more video. they've already done that once yesterday. so, let's start with new information about the victims this morning. nick valencia is following that for us in atlanta. nick, what is the latest? >> good morning, randi. we just got off the phone with the aurora police department, and we had expected to get that list, as you'd mentioned, within a matter of minutes here in the 10:00 eastern hour. unfortunately, the police now are saying they're pushing that back, and they do have a 2:00 p.m. local/

you look at the map and how close aurora, colorado, is to denver, colorado, just east. that could be a saving grace in effect in the work to try to save some lives there. as you said, there are 14 reported dead right now and at least 50 injured and we have some information in terms of where those went. again, during the briefing, they noted where they were sending some of the victims. five victims going to denver hospital, 14 to university hospital, three to the hospital in south denver, also two to the hospital in parker and two to swedish medical center and four transported to children's hospital. as you heard in the listing of those hospitals, many in the denver area, or in denver itself. so, that location, aurora, colorado, some 330,000 people. not large, not small, necessarily, but would it have the capacity, as they deal with this tragedy in that town? so, 330,000 people, about 20 miles east of denver. and that showing, that midnight showing, as you just had a discussion with a reporter on the ground, that was the first of some 20 showings they were going to have

in arizona where it happens-- >> colorado. >> colorado, the way it happens they have an advisement hearing and that basically means that the defendant and miss attorney advise that they're under investigation or that the defendant is under investigation and then within 72 hours, the d.a. has to file an information of some sort and that kicks in a probable cause hearing, and then the system begins, it's a little different in colorado, than it is in other states. >> so, are we going to be hearing the entry after plea or do we know that yet? >> i thought that we'll even hear an entry of a plea plea, it's not an adversarial hearing, it's an advisory hearing. that's what they call it. it's an opportunity for them to be advised of what's being investigated and for most people they might need that, and in this case it's quite clear that i don't think that james holmes or his attorney needs to know what he's being investigated for, but, we understand that it's a public defender, who is a very experienced, knowledgeable individual. and of course, the prosecutor here is a female prosecutor who fough

unfolding inside of a colorado movie theater. a shooting rampage left 12 people dead and at least 59 others injured. >> police say that the man behind the attacks was a graduate student with california connections. it happened at the first showing of the new batman movie. here's the latest from laura colorado. >> hospital officials say that 16 of the victims are critically injured when police are still here going to the evidence and investigating to determine exactly what happened and why. >> cellphone video captured the chaotic moments after a heavily armed gunman opened fire during a midnight showing of the new batman movie. a man in a blood soaked shirt and a child in a batman costume were among hundreds of people who escaped the carnage. >> there was a gas can that went off behind me and i thought it was a stunt from the movie. >> he was sitting in the second row when the attack started. >> it was a serious moment because i felt the shells from the bullets per my leg. >> jennifer said the first shot was fired at the ceiling.

leading off tonight, tragedy in colorado. it happens all too often and the names have become so familiar. jonesboro, arkansas, virginia tech, columbine, and now aurora, colorado. it happened not far from columbine high school where a sold out crowd had gathered in theater nine for the midnight opening of the batman movie "the dark knight rises." a man named james holmes walked through a door with a bulletproof vest, a gas mask, a throat protector, a groin protector and black gloves. police say he was also carrying three weapons. a rifle, shotgun and a handgun. witnesses say holmes calmly set off some kind of device and began firing randomly and terrified moviegoers. cell phone images captured the panicked scene as people desperately tried to flee the theater in some cases helping victims get out. in other cases simply running for their lives. in the end, police say 71 people were shot and at least 12 have been killed. james holmes was arrested without a struggle at his car just outside the theater. in addition, police say hol

i am live in aurora, colorado. let's get you now to another part of aurora where people are coming together to pray and share their sadness after this very profound tragedy. this is going to start moments from now. tell us what is happening. >> take a look at this crowd. this is the community. it is a diverse community. people from all walks of life: it's difficult to tell how many people are here. i spoke with a police officer and he told me there are thousands of people gathered in public, despite what has happened, despite the apprehension. a lot of people have come to hear the governor, family members, first responders who are all going to gather here at this prayer vigil. and people in the hospital recovering from the physical wounds and i spoke with one man, and he says what he is focusing on is his physical recovery. but also moving forward with his own emotional recovery by working to forgive the gunman. here's what he told us. >> i can't imagine what it would be like to get out of bed in the morning and pl

the tragedy in colorado is certainly on the minds of moviegoers in our area. derrick ward is outside a theater in northwest d.c. with the very latest. >> the first show begins here at 11:00. d.c. police are telling moviegoers what they can expect to see aside from the movie is a larger police presence. 58 wounded, 12 dead, james holmes due in court on monday. authorities have told moviegoer to see more of a police presence. recently at the gallery place cinemas in d.c., theater goers going there last night actually had their bags purchased. most didn't seem to mind. this is an attempted striking of a balance between security and what semblance of normalcy there can be in the wake of such tragedy. >> we've had no threats. we've had no indication of any issues in this area. we're just trying to get out ahead of it and make sure the family is safe. >> i did do a double take of should we be doing this, but i didn't want to alarm my kids and say too much. just hope that nobody would do this again. >> now one lasting change may go beyond all of this. the amc theater
