gavel to gavel coverage on c- span. joining us from our temporary studio in charlotte is mark mix, president of the florida afl-cio. -- is mike williams, president of the florida afl-cio. how would you described unions today? guest: many workers are struggling for am looking for an answer, looking for help. the issues they're facing every day, more and more leaders of organized labor from rank-and- file activists, and state and national leaders are recognizing that the education has to occur with workers and that is an ongoing process in building a true movement in the state of florida. there's great optimism in this country that the union movement is alive, growing, and will have significant impact on the lives of all workers in this country, not only now but to come. host: what percentage of florida workers in a right to work state are represented by unions? guest: it depends on the particular workplace discipline. it is about 10%-12%. host: is that consistent nationwide? guest: i would say no. there are other states

this is an item when i first took the gavel a year ago, i started talking to noreen and the general manager about just kind of repairs that we should make. a couple areas where it got out of sync with current law. one thing i know that has dragged on. i wanted to get it back before i left office. what you, what was distributed to you, we are not going to act on today. there's a requirement two week's notice before any change. this will come back at our next meeting for action. the changes in the red line strike out copy you have, so it takes the order of business and amends it to our current order business. one place where it has substance to it is the amount of notice we give for water rate changes. it actually shortens the time in the process making it winter with the board of supervisors policy. if we wanted to retain the older, longer time line, we certainly could choose to do that. couple comments. one of the reasons this hasn't come back sooner is because i haven't, just in being chair, i haven't noticed anything that wasn't there that i wished was. i don't think there needs to be som

[gavel] i'm robert chief and i'm the park's supervisor in the parks in the sunset district. i've been working here for 3 years. we are 60-70 street below street level. the 64 acre park. the park is divided into 2 sections we are in the stern area. when you get over to pine lake meadow and pine lake, pine lake is considered a natural area. in 1847, the green family came out here, back then this was kind of an empty canyon and sand dun area. they claimed this property. in 1892. george green who's a second generation built the truckdaro club house. there was a hotel then. it was said this was the place to go if you were weary of the dirty city and the police. there were a couple of gun fights the front door has bullet holes. i don't ever repair them. 1931 stig mond bought the property from the green family. she donated it to the city of san francisco and had a specification, i'm giving it to the city that will be used forever for the enjoyment forever of the people of the city of san francisco. it has ever since. every summer the stern grove association in san francisco rec and

[gavel] >> president chiu: good these classes are for folks to actually learn the rules of the road in san francisco. we ride on real street, on felt street, oak street, and paige street, and see how it feels to ride with other people. we talk about the public health department and the police department and our safe routes to school. we're reaching hundreds of kids each year. these are public schools that have been selected throughout the city. we're reaching kindergarten, first, second, and fourth with the safe walking and biking. and we participate in bike to school day in the spring. and walk to school is in october. hopefully a lot of you will come out and partner in that. sellita mentioned we partner in the "light of the night" campaign. we give out more than a thousand bike lights to folks who need them. people who are riding at night without bikes. we know that is a serious hazard. we're out with the police department, with the m.t.a., not just giving out lights, but installing them. we don't let you ride away with light in hand. we install it on your bicycle. we hope to do a lo

know, i -- i've covered this story for so long, you know, the network -- i wasn't there when they go gavel-to-gavel, but i've been there as they reduced and reduced. they had, i believe, 30 million people watching, 25 million people watching on the other party. i think people are watching. people are engaged. and yes, it's scripted -- >> even though the numbers are shrinking? >> but as far as the number of people who might be influenced, i don't necessarily think that's our job. whether we move votes. it was an important political event however they try to script it in my opinion. >> on the other hand, wednesday when nbc put on football, it got about -- almost as many viewers as did bill clinton. >> yeah. people who were actually in the arena watching football as opposed to that speech. so i think these things are going to be shortened but will always be around. we're not going to see the four-day con convention. both were three -- >> republican was supposed to be four days but got rained out because of tropical storm isaac. >> and the democrats had labor day. i think we'll look at three or two day
