they're working it hard and on larry's point about joe biden, that was as good as he can speak. he was direct. sober. he resisted the tendency he has to shout. he didn't do that so much. took directly on the bain argument, accused mitt romney of not understanding what the auto industry meant to america. said he thought about it the the bain way, which was balanced sheets. you mentioned the point about osama bin laden. the emotional moment about the troop was meant to contrast on the republican ticket. >> yeah, we did hear earlier this week that corporations were not people and yet, we also heard gm essentially referenced as a person. gm is alive. >> exactly right. look, both sides are a little silly with that argument. corporation, mitt romney is right. corporations are composed of human beings who organize themselves to make profits and pay themselves and pay their shareholders and all that. that's kind of a partisan tool. quote from mitt romney, but that was joe biden at his best tonight and i think in the same way that the republican ticket was very happy with the spectacular

he was a former chief economist for vice president joe biden and we have ray hennerman,. to what extent did the dismal jobs number help romney or too early to swing the vote on polling day? >> i think it basically confirms the narrative looking at the promises that came in on the economy, they simply aren't coming true in the labor market. in the result of the day's numbers, the labor market is worse than the start of the year. worse compared to last year. the fall in the unemployment rate is simply because record numbers of americans aren't even showing up to try to look for a job and narratives that the president had to overcome and indication that his policies of higher tax promises and expanding government spending aren't putting americans to work. >> jared, how's the president able to spin this if the jobs numbers are potentially worse and do and say to make it not something that counts against him? >> well, i think it's consistent with something he's done and said all along which is that we are moving in the right direction and just moving there too slowly and that'

barack obama and vice president joe biden have done a great job laying out a clear path forward, of investing in the restoration of the economy. we have now had 29 months straight of private sector job growth. none of us wants to see long-term dependency on food stamps. but in the farm bill that passed through the senate with a strong bipartisan majority there was a serious effort to reduce fraud and waste to frankly reduce the amount of resources available for food stamps in a responsible way. so i think to suggest this administration wants or encouraging dependency misses the mark. i think the reality is we are still recovering from a deep and difficult recession that was caused by bad economic policies of the previous decade. >> i get that. i know that criticism. last one, senator. aren't you worried that, in effect, with this dependency half the households in america have at least one person on government assistance of some kind? we are paying people not to work, senator. that has to be bad for the economy. we want more people to work and produce. out just seems like now under this depend
