clackamas town center had a lockdown procedure for this type of incident, and they did a great job with that program. three, a large number of police officers arrived on the scene very rapidly curtailing the suspect's ability to move around the mall. they got themselves out of the mall. they helped others get out. there are just a number of heroes that took the time to help people get out, whether it's in a wheelchair, a child. they helped a lot of people get out of that, and it was really about a full growhole group of coming together to make a difference. taking together these four factors, limiting the suspect's access to potential victims and gave him less time to harm others. i'd like to close by thanking all of our federal and state local law enforcement partners for their extraordinary efforts. several neighboring jurisdictions said as you might have heard, send everybody. they were talking about all the patrol officers for their small city. send them out here to help. >> you're listening to the details unfolding at this mall shooting. we learned about the victims, a 354-year-old

we've been covering the breaking news that shots were fired at the clackamas town center mall near portland, oregon, earlier today. roughly about 3:30 in the afternoon pacific time. at this time we have confirmation that three people are dead, including the gunman. one person is wounded. witnesses say the gunman worked with a semiautomatic rifle. the rachel maddow show picks up after this. >>> good evening. i'm ezra klein. rachel maddow has the night off. we begin tonight with an update on the breaking news in the pacific northwest, the terrifying scene that unfolded earlier tonight at a shopping mall in portland, oregon. a gunman with what witnesses describe as a rifle opening fire on holiday shoppers. two people were killed. the shooter also killed, and one person has been seriously injured according to the sheriff's department. an eyewitness who had been browsing the watch counter inside macy's described the scene to our portland, oregon affiliate kgw tv. >> constant boom, boom, boom, boom,boom, boom, boom, boom. it wasn't just a couple of shots. whatever the shooter was shooting at, the

. >> cnn's kyung lah is outside of the clackamas town center, and that's what you were just hearing about on that audio recording. kyung, we're piecing together all of this information, bit by bit, including that the gunman officially tried to flee in the middle of all of this volley of gunfire, and that he was also yelling out to witnesses, that he was the shooter. but what are we finding out about maybe the most important element, motive. why did this happen? >> reporter: it's very, very difficult to know right now. police themselves are saying, look, we just don't know. we don't know what the motive is. we don't have much of a criminal history on this man. in fact, he really wasn't on the radar at all for police. when you talk to his family, we reached out to his mother and family friends, what they say is, there were no apparent warning signs. you think back to the colorado movie shooting, to virginia tech. there were significant signs, but in this case, his family and his friends are saying, they just didn't see it. they thought of him as a normal 22-year-old boy, a family friend say

here is sherry harry smith >> reporter: this week, just three days ago, a gunman went to the mall in clackamas, oregon, he killed two strangers then killed himself. his victims were a much-loved hospice nurse and a coach, who one friend called "bigger than life." we were disturbed by the shooting because it took place at a busy mall filled with holiday shoppers. but these events don't stay with us for long. the dead are buried and the new cycle moves on. perhaps we have become enured to the horror. april, 1999, 12 students and one teacher, shot and killed in columbine, colorado, 21 more survived with gunshot wounds among them, craig scott. >> the day of the shooting at columbine, it was the worst day of my life. this is worse than columbine. these are little kids that we are talking about. and so many parents' hearts are breaks out there. and i'm sure that many little kids don't understand what happened. >> reporter: columbine is synonymous with mass shootings. the pictures of students fleeing the school are images we personalized. what would we do if something like that happened in our school

joining us on the phone is james rose with the clackamas county sheriffs department. can you tell us what you know? >> caller: at 3:30 today, we got a series of 911 calls, describing an active shooter at the mall. the police responded immediately. and began searching the mall for the shooter and evacuating people, making the scene secure. since then, we have determined, we have secured the shooter, he is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. we are carefully and methodically going through the mall, searching every room and square foot, removing people from the mall. >> have you identified the shooter and determined whether this is a random act of violence, pure evil, or whether or not somebody was specifically targeted? >> we have not. but the investigation is underway as we speak. >> did the gunman say anything? did any witnesses report that he had said anything? >> we have. there is close to a thousand people in the mall at the time. we have hundreds of witnesses, statements to go through. i don't know if we have some specific informs like that. but we

. >> notwithstanding the evidence, and they did that right after the clackamas shooting which also use assault weapons. you know, we had a murder -- a tragic murder/suicide with guns in a situation that might not have escalated to that kind of violence without guns. you know, what does it take in just the span of a week to get us to move? i was also really glad that the president brought up chicago because we can't only be focused on this tragedy in this particular community, but we have to look at the toll that guns are taking on our cities and the city of chicago is particularly besieged. this is a tragedy that crosses class lines, crosses racial lines, and we've all got to be in it together. >> karen, one of the arguments i keep hearing is that if people didn't have guns, they'd simply use a knife. >> which is absurd. that's an absurd response -- >> explain to me why that's absurd. >> because that completely denigrates what the real conversation should be about and that's gun safety, right? we're not talking about stabbings. we're not talking about drownings. we're not talking about

. >> nbc's mike taibbi joins me from the scene in clackamas, oregon. what's the scene there? >> reporter: imagine being part of that scene in any way at all. let's start with some good news, and there is some. first of all, about the victim who survived, we know two were killed and one survived. the family of that victim is now permitted to release her name. she is 15-year-old christina. according to one of her social network postings, she had recently survived a terrible car accident and now this. she appears to have escaped death twice at this point. her injuries were not serious to any vital organs. she had emergency surgery and is listed this morning in serious but stable condition. about the gunman, according to witnesses, he strolled throughout the mall with what they describe as an assault type weapon. sources have told our justice correspondent and colleague pete williams that it was like an ar-15. they said he was a 22-year-old male with apparently no criminal record, that he was allegedly firing randomly toward people, shattered some store windows. then at one point
