they don't affect anyone and occasionally you get something like a moore tornado that does hit a populated area and of course that's where we get the worst damage. >> dubois: okay, david, thank you very much, tonight. in houston, the mayor there says four firefighters were killed today battling a fire that spread to a restaurant and motel. several others were hurt. doug miller from our cbs houston affiliate khou is at the scene tonight. >> reporter: the fire broke out in that hotel shortly after noon and first firefighters on the scene thought they had it under control. but then it spread through the attic and they had to call for help. it was a five-alarmer, more than 100 firefighters called to the scene. initial reports indicated that a half dozen firefighters had been injured. only after they dug through the rubble did they discover the deaths. four firefighters dying. the fire broke out alongside one of the busiest freeways in the state of texas. backing up traffic for miles, and for hours. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. doug miller for cbs news, houston. >> dubois

but the town of moore, that's where a tornado last month killed 24 people. largely it was spared here. in the wake of all that, oklahoma and missouri, they are under states of emergency. all the way east of indiana, about 212,000 actually have no power there. and while the main airports in oklahoma city and in st. louis, missouri, they have re-opened all morning, and departchures out of oklahoma city have been cancelled and now another threat is looming. >> rain from the storm system can trigger flash floods, and today's forecast includes large hail and potential for more tornadoes. authorities are warning people to stay inside. for now they are monitoring water and waiting for daylight to assess the damage. let's begin our coverage out of oklahoma with george howell. he is in union city. it's one of the communities that was really hit hard by the storm. >> george, you are in this area right in front of a home that has been damaged, probably 45 minutes from sunlight here. you have covered moore, oklahoma, with the storm that hit 12 days ago. how does this co

. >> axelrod: so, anna, were the people of moore impacted by these latest twisters? >> reporter: they avoided a direct hit by the tornadoes, which was so fortunate, but, for residents trying to recover, some of them had to deal with thooding and more high winds, a lot of rain. the thunderstorms were really bad last night. >> axelrod: anna, thank you. we turn next to meteorologist jeff berardelli at our miami station, wfor. jeff, it seems to be an intense period lately in terms of oes.adoes. any kind of uncommon or even wecord-setting pace we're on? >> this past week has been txceptionally active and the reason why is we've had basically a stalled jet stream right across the plain state and ve ohio heal, and that's been causing a lot of severe weather. in fact, take a look at this 60aphic. just this week alone, we've had 115 reports of tornadoes, about d0 reports of wind damage, and about 700 reports of large hail. but take a look at this. we started off extraordinarily slow with only 18 tornadoes during the month of march. irmal is 80, and that is only 25% of normal.
