glad you could join us on this edition of "newsline." it's wednesday july 24th. i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. experts have added up what they think is cost of cleaning up fukushima after the nuclear sdas ferter. the bill could run to $50 billion, four times the amount the japanese government has allocated. cruise base it on levels of radiation. the government is responsible for cleaning up the no-entry zones around the fukushima daiichi nuclear plant and subsidizing work in other areas. government officials have allocated about $11 billion, but they haven't said what the total cost might be. experts from a science and technology institute carried out a study. they estimated cleaning up the no-entry sdploens zones alone would cost $20 billion. they say work in other areas would add up to more than $30 billion. >> translator: the government should study the costs before deciding whether to complete decontamination. or reallocate the money to help people rebuild their lives. >> she says government officials are overseeing the work without considering the expecta

>>> welcome to "newsline." it's friday, july 26th. i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. >>> investigators are trying to determine the cause of spain's worst rail accident in decades. at least 80 people were killed after the train rounded a curve and jumped off of the tracks. more than 140 others were injured. police suspect the driver had pushed the train well above the speed limit. public broadcaster tve aired video of the crash. the force of the impact sent cars tumbling. the train was traveling from the capital madrid to the northwestern city of el ferrol. more than 240 people were on board. the train went through a tunnel as it approached the city of santiago de compostela. then it entered a curve. the speed limit is 80 kilometers per hour. but the news reports that the driver said the train was traveling at 190 kilometer ps per hour. they modified a car and installed a diesel generator to move the cars on a track that was not electrified. a japanese expert says the modifications may have raised the car's center of gravity and that m

>>> welcome to "newsline." it's thursday, july 18th. i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. >>> cuban officials have admitted that a stash of weapons found on a north korean cargo ship came from their country but they say the soviet era arms were being sent to the north to be repaired. authorities policing the panama canal discovered the weapons last week hidden amidst sacks of sugar. the foreign ministry confirmed in a statement that the ship was carrying weapons bound for north korea. the spokesperson says the soviet era missile parts needed to be repaired. they said the shipment was not a breach of u.n. security council sanctions. the crew of the freighter was trying to return home from cuba through the canal. the 35 crew members resisted efforts to redirect the ship into port. investigators detained them. spokesperson for north korea's foreign ministry says the ship was transporting the weapons for return to cuba as part of a legitimate contract. ministry officials are demanding that authorities in panama release the ship and its crew. >
