how high up in the navy that report went about aaron alexis hearing voices. i guess the question to you, senator mccall, what is wrong at the navy? is this something you can blame on they're using outside contractors to do a lot of this screening whether it be for basic background checks or security clearance? or is it something more significant than that? >> well, there's a high demand for clearances on the outside with the contractors. but clearly in this case -- here's the big issue, erin, that concerns me. we know that al qaeda and terrorist groups would love to infiltrate or radicalize or find someone that has this access, these clearances, to get on a military installation and cause the type of tragedy that he caused. so i think we need a more heightened state of alert when it comes to who we're giving these clearances out. to this is a secret level. this is the u.s. federal government trust of an individual with classified information, but also access to a very sensitive military installation. and yet it looks like there's not enough precautions here i

the man is aaron alexis, 34 years old. according to his aunts, he grew up in brooklyn, new york, with his mother and his father and his brother. he had been in the navy reserve for about four years. we continue to learn more about him as each hour passes. but here's the basics of what we know so far. he did serve in the naval reserves, but he was never on active duty. he never deployed to a war zone. he joined up in the spring of 2007 and was out of the naval reserve by 2011. his last posting was at the naval air station in ft. worth, texas. he worked there at the fleet logistics support squadron. outside of his time in the navy, we know of two incidents in which mr. alexis was arrested. the first was in 2004, may 2004, in seattle. he was arrested for shooting out the tires of somebody else's vehicle. according to the police report, which was released publicly by the seattle police department today, mr. alexis would have been roughly 25 years old at the time. he shot out the rear tires of a vehicle that was parked next to

everywhere aaron went he took gaia. that opened the door for him. he suddenly started engaging with other people, talking to staff, being more open. he had a softer, more nurturing side that emerged after gaia came into his life. aaron and i never had an overt conversation about the fact he killed his parents and now he was parenting a kitten. it was obvious to me though that whatever he couldn't feel for his own family and certainly the people he killed, he seemed to transfer all of these emotions over to this cat, which was interesting to observe, and we spent weeks there and i would check in with him periodically, and we were filming aaron looking at family photographs, and he started to pause and he seemed to almost be reminiscing in a good way as he looked at his mom, and he seemed to have a little kinder feelings towards her. >> this is probably the best picture i have ever seen of my mom. this was also in '85. this was when she graduated from a beauty school as a beautician. >> he was describing her in a kinder, more loving way than i had eve

when authorities say that aaron alexis, a 34-year-old from ft. worth, texas, he used his military contractor i.d. to get into a building here at the washington navy yard. he walked in and began firing down from an atrium. >> they were quick shots like bam, bam, bam. two seconds later, bam, bam, bam. i just started running. >> everyone said this is no drill. go, go, go. emergency exits now. go, go, go. >> people were yelling to close the doors, lock the doors. we heard a very loud gunshot very close by and we looked up and we saw bullet holes in the wall to the conference that we were in about a foot down from the ceiling. >> he was far enough down the hall that we couldn't see his face but we could see him with a rifle and he raised and aimed at us. and he hit high on the wall. >> as we came outside, people were climbing the wall trying to get out over the wall to get out of the spaces. it was just crazy. >> alexis is the only gunman now, officials say. yesterday, there was word that there was maybe a second, a third possible person involved in t
