we'll get to david shuster filling in for ali velshi. he's leading our coverage, ali of nelson mandela's memorial in south africa. david filling in tonight. i want to you piggyback on what we're talking about, the kind of details we're starts to get more to come on this proposed deal. i'm wondering if you had a chance to tal talk about whether this is a good deal to be viewed in the markets tomorrow. >> reporter: if congress could not meet a deal, or suppose this doesn't pass, and there is another government shutdown. that is the sort of thing that causes market legitimators and the stocks to drop, , i think stocks will stay the same. simply because the economy is getting stronger there are more tax receipts flowing into the federal government. that's why the annual budget deficit the fiscal year that just ended was 39% less than that same deficit as a percentage of gdp a year ago. to its extent that congress gets out of the way and reassures the economists that things are moving strongly, that will help the market. >> david, appreciate

david shuster said he used slang when interviewing hillary clinton asking if they were going to be pimping out chelsea clinton. he said i don't understand what's happening here. somebody must have pictures of phil griffin. >> griffin the misnbc president. come back to the hiring of alec baldwin, an actor and comedian and msnbc gives him a weekly show not unaware of the fact he's had anger issues in the past. do you get shocked over this? >> you can't compare all these three things. the cbs thing is a genuine journalistic miscarriage. the alec baldwin thing, he'd barely been on the air at all and he is a loose cannon. they probably thought differently of it very quickly after hiring him, whether he had done that or not. then you have the martin bashir thing, which was really quite different. he was making a very legitimate point about sarah palin. >> let's back up for people who haven't been following. sarah palin had given a speech in which she compared the national debt and owing money to china to slavery. a lot of people didn't like that. i said this in the beginning, it is fair game to

. >> ira glass hosts "this american life" and this week he speaks with david shuster about how the show tries to set itself apart. >> we did an hour on guantanamo. we went in trying to achieve all sorts of thinks. when we did that hour, i can remember 300 people have been released from guantanamo. the u.s. had interrogated the guys saying you never were a threat to the united states. it was a mistake to pick you up. we realised 200, 300 people were released and no one interviewed them in american broadcast journalism. they had not been an tv or radio. it was, like, we can do that. we got translators, people from other countries and tried to get people on the air, "how were you treated. do you want to kill someone. how are you feeling about that experience. just asking normal things that anyone would ask. >> the packaging of that show. we felt like people did not want to hear an hour. even i, if there was a big head, guantanamo, an hour, that will be heavy. i know what i think, i have an opinion. i feel like i think it's incumbent on all of us, all broadcasters, you have to be gunning ab

david shuster is going to be exploring this and much more in "real money" how much have women caught up and closing this gap? >> well, tony, according to a research women saw their earnings in 2012 rise to 93% of what men in the same age group receive for doing the same work. younger women had made 67% of what their young male colleagues earned back in 1980. but since then minimum wages for women have increased while they have decreased for men. they are now better educated than their male colleagues and they're actually likely to be in the workforce. >> the pay gap still committees for women later on in their careers, correct? >> reporter: that's right. overall the reason today are more likely to take time off from work when they get married, have children while the opposite is still true. they're more likely to keep working. when you factor it all in together the gap for all workers, men versus women, it is 84% of what women make compared to men. it's better, but there are terms of progress in narrowing it in the future. we'll discuss the minimum wage. there is an effort under way

david shuster is here sitting in for ali velshi, on "real money," great to see you. the all important question: remind us us again of how important the thanksgiving holiday weekend is in terms of sales for the entire holiday shopping season. >> great question, tony. to put it in perspective, the holiday season accounts for something like 30% of all of the sales that retailers have and something like 40% of the profits for america's retailers so how they do during thanksgiving weekend, starting on thanksgiving weekend and starting starred is usually a pretty good gauge of how things are going. here is the downside. overall, the amount of money that has changed hands was about 3% less than last year. there were just as many people shopping, but because of all of the deals out there, people being a little bit tighter with their cash, three % less money was spent, so that's why a lot of folks are looking towards cyber purchases to online purchases to try to make up some of that, but again, the amount of money that is spent online is still pretty small compared to people

this week on talk to al jazeera, he speaks to david shuster about how the show tries to set itself apart. >> we did an hour after guantanamo. we went in with a missiony sense of we're trying to achieve all sorts of things. when we did our hour in guantanamo, 100, 200 people had been released from guantanamo bay already. they interrogate them and say they weren't a threat. 200 people like that were released years ago, and nobody had ever interviewed them in mernl journalism, in american broadcast journalism. we couldn't find anybody that had interviewed them. we could do that and interview them. we started to track them down and got translators from people from other countries and tried to get people to just get them on the air and tell what happens to you. what happened to you? horp you treated? how do you feel about america? do you want to kill us all now? how do you feel about the experience? normal things any reporter would ask, but the packaging of that show, i feel like i -- like we felt like the people don't want to hear an hour about guantanamo generally. i feel like i'm super int

i'm david shuster. the obama administration is giving people a one day extension to sign up for health insurance under the affordable care act. those looking to register have until the end of today to complete the on line forms needed in order to be covered by january 1. in south sudan, the united is sending an additional 150 marines to help evacuate americans pinned down by the increasing violence there. the u.n. court council is set to vote today whether to double the number of troops in the war torn country. >> in egypt, several explosions at the local police headquarters in the city have killed four and wounded 130 others. the blast said the police were likely caused by car bombs. >> the obama administration says it is willing to extend a deadline to determine the future of u.s. troops in afghanistan. the original date for sign that go agreement was december 31. despite softening that deadline, the u.s. stands by the warning that a complete troop withdrawal is possible. hamid karzai refuses to oh si
