we have nbc 10's matt delucia checking them out in stormforce10. matt, where are you headed? >> reporter: right now, tracy, we are on the roosevelt boulevard, heading south right now to winchester avenue. that is where we understand that a tree has fallen down, so we're going to head in that direction, check out what's going on. earlier, there was a traffic light that was out at grant and the boulevard, but that situation has been fixed. we talk about the wind out here and the wet roads. the wind gusts from our equipment that's on top of stormforce10, we have some very high-tech gear out here. when we're stopped at the traffic lights, we have got about 10-mile-an-hour winds. so, you've got trees blowing the leaves out on to the streets and on to the roadways, and so, a lot of cars taking it extra slow this morning, but the roads are wet. a little bit slick. take it easy as you're heading out there. and when we get to that situation and we see what's going on out there, we will come back with another live picture. for now, i'm live in stormforce10, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >

matt delucia is live at citizens bank park where the walk will step off in less than an hour. what's happening down there, matt? >> reporter: we still have about an housework but thousands of people are already here just outside citizens bank park. you can see the crud that is formed out here in the parking lot and along the street. close to 15,000 people in total will be out here for this walk. it's the sixth and final alzheimer's walk in the delaware valley for this year with a goal of raising $2 million, and they hope to raise more than a million. about 1.2 million with this week alone. and we're talking about how much of an impact this disease has. there's an estimated 300,000 people in our area who are affected by alzheimer's and dementia. and so many people out here, you see the purple colors. people are wearing purple. they're holding purple flowers and other colors as well. but we have janay here who's been impacted by alzheimer's. why are you out here today? >> walking for hope that one day there will be a cure. because watching my grandmother go through it and my unc

live in camden, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >>> 4:05 now. critics of pennsylvania's public schools are taking their complaints to court. today, six school districts will join parents and the naacp to announce legal action against the state. the groups claim the governor, lawmakers and state education officials are responsible for a school funding system that is skewed against equal funding for racially diverse districts. details of this lawsuit will be announced at 11:00 this morning in harrisburg, and you can count on nbc 10 to bring you those details. >>> happening today, deliberations are expected to begin in the trial of a former decorated philadelphia police officer. prosecutors say richard decoatsworth assaulted his then live-in girlfriend last year at the port richmond home they shared. decoatsworth spent more than a year in jail after also being accused of rape and human trafficking involving two other women. those charges were dropped, but the assault charges stuck. he retired from the force in 2011 after a five-year career. >>> ano

nbc 10's matt delucia is live in camden. matt, you spoke exclusively to the superintendent. what are the plans to make things better? >> reporter: yeah, well, the superintendent tells me that success is not going to come easily and it's not going to happen overnight, but it starts with having a frank conversation with parents, and here is why. last year, late last year, students in camden took standardized tests, and the results were not very good. and when it comes to english, only one in five students here is considered proficient, and there are similar numbers for math. that is well below the state average, and it hasn't changed much. the results were about the same from the year before. >> if the numbers aren't as good right now, how are you going to expect that to turn around with their performance going forward? >> for us, we need to raise the bar for our students and to not intellectually underestimate them. and so, in the classroom, we need to ensure that we're challenging our students and that we're setting the bar as high as possible, because we need to better prep

matt delucia live at the airport. tell us more. >> people here are starting to get a head start on their holiday travel plans. some folks here are already taking flights they had scheduled ahead of time, but now people trying to reschedule. look at the terminal here. this is the b terminal and relatively quiet right now. here's the deal, some airlines are waiving the change fees. american airlines and usairways passengers scheduled to fly to the northeast tomorrow can move their flights to either today or thursday for free. the deal applies to nearly 20 cities, including philadelphia. and united airlines along with delta, they are also allowing travelers to move flights to an earlier or later time. but that travel needs to be completed by friday. again, philadelphia is among the airports included in the offer. as we look live here at philly international, it is still quiet at this point. we saw little bit larger lines at the security checkpoints. but as the day progresses people start the holiday travel and we'll talk

nbc 10's matt delucia is live inside the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul in center city. matt, actually, the archbishop, archbishop chaput was in rome when the announcement was made this morning, right? >> reporter: yeah, that's right, chris. archbishop charles chaput and a delegation from our area was in rome to get that news as it was happening, just a couple of hours ago. archbishop chaput even says that he is overjoyed and he believes that the pope's presence next year for the world meeting of families will electrify the gathering. now, the world meeting of families is scheduled to be held september 22nd to 27th, and that would include a papal mass on sunday, september 27th. you might recall, there was a strong push from local leaders to get pope francis to make the trip to philadelphia for this event. it will be pope francis's first papal trip to the u.s., and it's only the fourth time that a reigning pope has come to this country, so it's an historic moment indeed. and right now, we'll come back live. i've got gerald davis here, on the board of trustees for st. char

nbc 10's matt delucia's live in camden. and matt, you spoke exclusively to the superintendent. what's the plan to make things better there? >> reporter: well, tracy, each school is unique, and so, each school will have its own plan moving forward. the catto elementary school, where i am at right now, it's one of the better performing schools here in camden, but that is not the case across the board. and here's why. students in camden last year took standardized tests, and the results overall were not very good. when it comes to english, only one in five students is considered proficient, and similar numbers are the case for math. and that is well below the state average. now, in my conversation with the superintendent, who's been on the job for a little over a year, he tells me as of now, all options are on the table. and essentially, he wants to make these schools better by starting from scratch and not fixing everything piece by piece. is it almost an experiment, if you will, where you're trying to see what's working in one school and applying it to another? >> bottom line, w

matt delucia is live on the scene. >> reporter: vai, that family of three went to the hospital for observation, but they are expected to be okay. meantime, this is the house where it all happened. the poisonous gas was so intense that one of the residents lost consciousness as officers knocked on the door. >> for anybody of any age, it would be dangerous. >> reporter: carbon monoxide, three times the acceptable limit, was filling this sicklerville home. it was just before 4:00 a.m. that a call came in to report a woman had passed out. that woman, a man, and a child fumes. >> when i came outside, they said don't come too close. >> reporter: neighbors tell me the young girl is about 6 years old and her father is a pastor at a local church. firefighters believe the carbon monoxide may have come from a faulty heater in the basement. the colorless and odorless gas can only be picked up by a working alarm. >> we could not hear any co detector when we got here. with readings above 900 parts per million the co detector could have become oversaturated. >> reporter: by day break firefighters had fanned

matt delucia is live. it's the time of year when we start to see more carbon monoxide leaks. tell us more. >> the most important thing, tracy, having a carbon monoxide alarm. over in philadelphia, they have not had any deaths this year related to carbon monoxide and the fire commissioner wants to keep it that way. i sat down with commissioner derek sawyer this weekend and he tells me many homes are not ready in the event of a carbon monoxide leak. because the gas is colorless, odorless and tasteless, no way to know unless you have an alarm or start to develop symptoms. those symptoms are very similar to the flu. you feel sick, light headed, you might pass out. and as of january 2009, it is the law to have one carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home, but at 30 bucks a pop, not everyone can afford it or wants to pay that. and the city does hand out smoke alarms to the less fortunate, but not co alarms. >> trying to make carbon monoxide alarms part of the funded programs for you can get them out to people who need them. >> fund a carbon monoxide campaign. they are just

nbc 10's matt delucia is live along the parkway in center city. maybe matt will be running, you never know. >> i will not be running, but a lot of people will be. about 30,000 people will be running this weekend throughout center city and throughout philadelphia. i'll show you the traffic situation right now. police have been setting up barricades throughout the day. traffic is moving smoothfully through center city, well, as smoothly as you can get for rush hour. we'll show you video from earlier today. more than 30,000 runners are expected to come out here this weekend as i mentioned. you add another 60,000 spectators. i've been talking with some of the runners this afternoon. their training is done but it's time to put a year of work on the starting line. runners are coming from all 50 states and 40 countries. security measures will be in place, including mandatory clear bags. the marathon starts at 7:00 a.m. sunday. now for 21 years, people will be trekking 26.2 miles through philadelphia. >> philadelphia marathon weekend is a great opportunit

matt delucia has been out there with fire crews for the past few hours. fill us in on what they're doing right now. >> rosemary, route 73 has been shut down both directions for several hours this morning. it's expected to be cloeed for a little while longer. this is why. fire crews you see are still out here on the scene. they've been working to extinguish this fire. just white smoke but this one burned with intensity. the flames lit up the night sky. smoke could be seen for miles. >> i just walked outside to get my paper. looked down the street, saw all the flashing lights. i walked down here and saw the building was completely engulfed in flames. >> neighbors who live near the intersection of route 73 and stiles avenue watched and snapped photoing this morning as firefighters battled this one from the ground and above. the fire chief tells me it got so intense inside the building firefighters were pulled out. the property is home to south jersey mowers, which has been in business since the '80s. >> the family has been around forever, for a long time in
