on thursday the bodies of four people were discovered in a burning home in upper northwest washington. garrett haik is live at the scene. >> reporter: this is a wealthy neighborhood complete with high fences, private security, and surveillance cameras on nearly every home. so you can imagine the anxiety of the people i spoke to who said this kind of grizzly crime just doesn't happen here. when the flames were finally doused at the family's home thursday night, the horror inside was revealed. four bodies. the man and his wife, their housekeeper, their 10-year-old son. the death shocked this upscale neighborhood, but when police said friday that all four were murdered, the shock turned to worry. >> it's so sad. >> reporter: with no one in custody, several neighbors would only speak to us today if we didn't show their faces. >> to know that it happened, i don't feel safe, because you don't know who did it. >> reporter: another mixed concern with defiance. >> i really feel pretty safe. i guess if it could happen here, could it happen anywhere. but bad stuff happens, and i'm just not going

to the news at noon, we have some breaking news now from northwest washington. a parking lot has collapsed at the water gate complex in foggy bottom. allyson barber is there live on the scene. what do we know so far? >> reporter: still learning a lot of information. what we know right now is that two floors of a parking deck collapsed inside the water gate hotel. we got here an hour ago. tons of fire trucks and police cars behind me and over on the left side of the street. there were a couple of hundred construction workers on the side of the road. they were either inside that hotel working or getting ready to go inside and work when the parking garage collapsed. some construction workers that we spoke with said it was two floors it seemed to be the ground floor that fell into the base. . they say that they didn't smell anything that was smoky it seemed like there was all caused by some type of pressure explosion. they believe that it was caused by some type of pipe explosion. d.c. fire tells us they're still investigating that right now. we saw some photos from

authorities say daron wint accused of murdering four people in the upscale northwest washington home. police say he did not act alone. wint was in court today following his arrest overnight in northeast. a court document indicates that authorities feel wint had at least one accomplice based on the nature of the crime. leon: charles county police say a mother was found pushing a dead 3-year-old in a swing at the memorial park in la plata and say the child's body showed no obvious sign of trauma. the mother is now at a hospital for a medical evaluation. alison: the woman accusing jesse mathew of sexual assault ten years ago will testify at a pretrial hearing next month. mathew was in court for another pretrial hearing today. he is also accused of killing university of virginia student hannah graham near charlottesville. leon: we are keeping a close eye on a developing story off the coast of louisiana. 28 people have been evacuated from an oil platform there. they helped evacuate the worker after a fire broke out at the top of the platform. no one was injured. the operator estimates 5000

washington. our coverage on news 4 midday begins there with news 4's chris gordon. chris? >> reporter: this is chris gordon at the scene. this is 1330 seventh street northwest, a high-rise apartment fire. we want to show you that fire truck four still has a ladder extended to the ninth floor. that's the apartment where this fire occurred. we want to show you video shot at the height of this smokey blaze. it happened about 8:00 this morning. it's a two-alarm fire. additional fire ambulance and medics all this equipment was brought to the scene. we were told a firefighter was transported priority one, that means critical condition can life-threatened injuries. we later found out he died. also we were told about other serious injuries. >> the second firefighter was transported serious but non-life threatening injuries and another reported serious with non-life threatening injuries. >> all i know i work to an alarm going off in the building. i came to look outside my door there was smoke everywhere.

live from northwest washington, andrea mccarren, wusa9. >>> still plenty of mysteries tonight in the slaughter of a wealthy family and their housekeeper inside a d.c. mansion, but we do now know how the accused killer escaped brooklyn one step ahead of the law. bruce leshan is live with the latest. how did daron wint get away from police? >> reporter: in a cab according to the new york daily news paid for with some of the proceeds from the grisly murders here, $1,000 cash for the ride, for tolls and a hefty tip for the cabbie. daron wint is the only suspect charged so far in the torture and murder of savvas and amy savopoulos, their 10-year-old son phillip and of their housekeeper vera figueroa. the four other people picked up with wint last week were released uncharged and without public explanation so far from the police. in court documents detective jeffrey owens says the family was held captive by mr. wint and others and that the crimes required the presence and assistance of more than one person. >> mr. wint is now incarcerated and is held without bond. our work is not done. >>
