the suspected shooter, james austin hancock, today denied the charges against him. he's in juvenile court. reporter: by all accounts james austin hancock was well liked. students say he was happy kid, a wrestler at madison junior high. and he had no criminal past. a madison township family consoling one another outside of the courtroom. inside, they were brought to tears as james austin hancock made his first appearance before a magistrate. >> court will enter the denial of the charge. reporter: the 14-year-old' s attorney denied the charges that' s the equivilant of pleading not guilty in adult court. hancock is charged with a handful of felonies including 2 counts of attempted murder. >> we talked to the shooter

mark: 14-year-old austin hancock is facing several charges. he is a student at the school and he is on the wrestling team. the wrestling team connects victims. school officials say 14-year-old cooper caffrey is also on the the other shooting victim is 15-year-old cameron smith and he is a student. both are expected to survive and investigators are trying to determine why they were targeted. we are told two other 14-year-old students were hurt. katherine doucette was hit by shrapnel and brant murray was injured in the chaos after the shots were fired. today, students are staying home and teachers returning to figure out the best steps to take moving forward. lisa: there could also be a court appearance today for the 14-year-old boy accused of carrying out the shooting. wlwt news 5' s dan griffin was -- has been live at the scene from the very beginning. he' s at butler county juvenile court with a breakdown of where the investigation stands this morning. dan: no doubt, it has been a tough 24-hours for everyone involved. this case could head to
