we do begin with a developing story of an arrest in the clayton fire. investigators say this man deliberately set the fire on saturday. he is now facing 17 arson-related charges. ktvuvu's al -- -- alex savidge is live to talk about the range of emotion. it sounds like he has been setting fires for a year and a half. >>reporter: right. that the word from authorities is that this man may be responsible for a none of fires in this area. this whole community has been ravaged by fires. there is a sense of relief that an arrest has been made, but people are angry and frustrated trying to understand why someone would cause this kind of destruction. we're going to walk you here up toward one of the homes on lake street. you can see and have a look around all that is left of this place is the chimney. when you walk around the downtown lower lake area, there are entire blocks that were leveled by this fire. thousands of people were forced from their homes by this firestorm. but there you hear the reaction last night. the crowd of evacuees erupted in cheers during

. >> reporter: the clayton fire is 20% contained. today, residents are slowly beginning to pick up the pieces. when wade holley pulled up to his family's mechanics shop sunday night, the fire had just ripped through downtown and was making it's way towards nearby homes. you guys were lucky. >> we were extremely lucky. >> reporter: the blaze consumed several cars and got right up to this wall before firefighters swooped in. 175 other homes and business in lower lake weren't as lucky. >> it is my pleasure to announce the arrest of damin anthony pashilk, age 40, of clear lake. well, breaking overnight, police have arrested the man they say started the devastating clayton fire in northern california. more than 175 homes and businesses have been destroyed by that fire. please revealed the arrest of 40-year-old dam in pashik at a facility doubles as a center. they say pashik is now responsible for several fires. >> at the assistance of the district attorney's office, they have arrested mr. pashik on 17 charges of arson. >> reporter: police say damin anthony pashik is responsible for numerous fires in the past including the blaze that tore through the town of lake county over the weekend. >> with a lake county homes you know that the fires we've been experiencing is definitely not normal. fires don't simply start. >> reporter: it destroyed more than 7500 buildings and homes including this woman's. >> i have nowhere to go. many times we loaded up the kids and ran for our lives. >> reporter: the fire started saturday afternoon, and by sunday was burning house after house. 100-degree heat and fierce winds made battling the blaze difficult from the air and on the
