here to break it down for us is pete williams. pete, we're just now hearing about this. get us up to speed and tell us what we have to know. >> this lawsuit has been filed in state court in nevada by the donald trump campaign. and what they claim is that the voting was improper on early voting day on friday, that people were allowed to vote after the polls closed. and sthee not have been. now, like many state, nevada has a law that says if are you in line when the polls close, you can still vote. all the people who were in line when the polls closed can vote. what the trump campaign krams is will that people were allowed to vote who were not about in line when the polls closed. this was a polling place in clark county, in a hispanic neighborhood. and they claim those votes shouldn't count. it's not clear what the remedy will be here, but there will be a hearing on this and i'm sure that the judge will dispose of this quite quickly. this doesn't sound to me like the kinz of case that has never come up before. this is pretty standard litigating. not sure what the case law

i want to bring in pete williams. it's relatively normal across the 50 united states to allow those who are in line at the time the poll is closing to vote. what is the -- what grounds does the trump campaign have? >> here's their claim. they say, yeah, we get that, but they say the problem here is that the county election officials made the decision way early, before the lines got long, before the time for cutoff happened, that they were going to keep the polling places in a few places open till 10:00. after saying they would close at 8:00. so, that's the first claim. and what they, in essence say is, doing this selectively was unfa unfair. that it favored voters in one precinct over another. there's a fairness question here. secondly they say as a strictly legal matter, when the county decides to create -- to extend the polling times sort of arbitrarily they're, in essence, creating a new polling place. one that now stays open from the normal closing time until later and they can't do that under law. there's only a

i want to bring in msnbc news justice correspondent pete williams. he's tracking developments on that story us. what's the latest out of this nevada suit? >> reporter: the latest is the judge just held a hearing on the request from the lawyers for donald trump. they argued that the polls were allowed to stay open improperly in four polls places in las vegas on friday, the last day for early voting. they make two claims, basically. they say that the election officials decided early in the process, basically o that day, to let the polls stay open until 10:00 instead of 8:00. they say that's a violation of the law because the county had to post in advance what the closing times were. they say doing it later was illegal. secondly, they say it's unfair to let some polls stay open and not others. that disadvantaged one political party to the comparison of another. secondly, they say people who showed up late were allowed to vote even if they got in line after the scheduled closing time. both of those are problems, they say. they wanted the judge to order t

correspondent pete williams joins us from the newsroom. tell us more. this stems from the early voting period in nevada. it ended on friday. there were voters in line and they were allowed to vote. trump campaign said they shouldn't have been. >> two claims. they were four largely democratic precincts in las vegas. if they show up after the polls closed that were not in line when the polls closed were still allowed to vote. the bigger question is some of these precincts changed the closing time after the closing times were already announced and the trump lawyers say you can't do that. what they asked the judge to do in this lawsuit is we want you to set the voting machines and the ballots aside. the judge said we were going to do that anyway. that's what we do at every precinct. what is it you really want? they said we need to preserve a record and need to know the poll workers were. that's what they want. this is about doing the work that would be necessary if the trump lawyers decide later to file a contest and contest the results of the election and

pete williams joins us now. what's the word so far? >> reporter: so far, it seems like the normal kind of day for elections in america. we have to remember these are come as you are process for people who put them on every four years. a lot of volunteers, people who have to be retrained and a lot of aging equipment but a flavor for what's going on, craig, problems where people go to check in at the polling places. in maricopa county, arizona, that's the phoenix area. they use little tablets like ipads to check you in to see if you're on the voter registration list. those weren't working so now they use paper poll books. this durham county, north carolina, a similar problem. they have to print a little bar code on your ballot so that when you put it in your machine, it pulls out the right choices. that wasn't working. a similar problem. the express vote system. in connecticut, broken voting machines in west hartford, new britain and farmington. we're told in farmington, one of the technicians took the power supply, disconnected it, shoo

pete williams is manning the vote watch desk and perhaps because of the early voting, but it seems that glitches are out there, but explainable. >> the one problem where there has been complaints is pennsylvania. a lot of republican voters and scattered number of counties. perhaps as many as five or six say which when they went to vote the republican ticket, the machine gave democratic results. we had no response and one county the election officials said they tried to get the machines to do that and couldn't. it's hard to tell how many actually happened. you had the lawsuit by donald trump's lawyers. they were upset about early voting last friday in four polling locations, predominantly democratic in las vegas. basically people who showed up after the scheduled polling time to close and got in line were still allowed to vote and say the election officials in those polling places decided early in the day to extend the time two more hours. the lawyers said they couldn't do that and asked the judge to set the machines and ballots aside and the judge said that's what we do anyway. we alway

according to nbc's pete williams, senior law enforcement official says there were no gunshot wounds. eight people were hurt. they have been taken to area hospitals, but their injuries are not life-threatening. now, what pete is reporting citing senior law enforcement officials is that a fire alarm in one of the buildings may have been pulled, which caused the students to leave that building, to evacuate. at that point the reports are that they were either hit by or run down by a car or attacked with someone with a knife. we don't know whether that is two suspects, whether it is one suspect. we do know that the local affiliate this morning citing columbus police officials said a suspect was dead, but, again, we don't know whether there was more than one suspect. they are saying the situation is over, but it's interesting. you see that bulletin down there? the exact nature of the incident is unclear. we're learning that there was a knife involved according to officials. there may have been a car involved. there are also reports of an explosion. so the university's president is going to

nbc's justice correspondent, pete williams, joins us now with the latest. pete, what do we know now? >> we know that this was a single person who carried out this attack, and authorities are investigating whether anyone else was involved. there's no sign of that yet, they say. the single attacker was a first-year student, a freshman, 18 years old. abdul artan. they say he drove that car on to the just before 10:00 this morning, ran into a bunch of students, plowed into them with a car, and got out and attacked several of them with a knife before he was shot by a campus policeman and killed. he's a somali refugee, he came with his family, about eight of them, in all, to the united states in 2014 and appeared to fit in quite well, at first. he went to a community college, he graduated cum laude, seemed enthusiastic when he graduated. and then applied and was accepted at ohio state university and began to study there in the fall. he was interviewed by the campus newspaper in august. he said he felt a little awkward as a muslim looking for a place to pray, beca
