welcome to "morning joe." with us on this very big news morning political analyst and co-author of game change mark halperin, council on foreign relations and author of "a world in disai ray" richard haass. columnist david ignatius and pulitzer prize winning historian jon meacham. good morning, everyone. >> good morning. mark halperin, a lot to unpack here. quickly, what are the big headlines here? >> almost everyone i knew thought from the day donald trump named general flynn that his days were numbered for a variety of reasons, including his ties to russia. that will continue to be investigated just because he departed. the people the president is considering are strong names to rebuild the national security team and overall national security team that does need repair. it does raise questions about the president's judgment and whous counsel that knew about this allegation he could be blackmailed. whether he did something or not, most people who had that job would have resigned had nothing been done about it

joe was a doer. he created a sanctuary program for the homeless youth, which was established and later named in his honor upon joe's retirement. under his leadership, the fresno e.o.c. became a model for similar programs around the nation. one of the truly outstanding leaders in terms of community action agencies in the contry. joe made that happen. in 1977, he became the first african-american leekted to the fresno city council. he served two terms and was always an advocate for what's best for the entire city. he said you know, you got to feel it in your gut. if it's there, you do it. he was a civil rights leader in our san joaquin valley throughout the state and nation, encouraging others to do the right thing. my thoughts and prayers are with joe's wife, laura, their children, winston and terry, his brother, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. my colleagues, i ask you to join me in paying tribute to the life and times of joe williams. he will be remembered in

joe: i do not have a canned answer to that. usually i have already heard the questions and i am scripted to do this. i went to college at the college of lame and mary. before -- william and mary. before that i went to a jesuit school in d.c. called gonzaga. i was classically trained in terms of latin and greek. i did not really take much in the way of american history. i majored in philosophy at lehman mary, and when it came time afterwards -- at william and mary and when it came time afterwards, people come up to me and say what are you going to do, that horrible question, and you have got to have an answer. my answer was, i going to law school. i have not thought about it but i knew that was a good answer because everyone would accept that answer. my senior year i realized i did not have the money to go to law school. i was on my own, and william and mary was not cheap. i was working as a head super lifeguard in the d.c. area overseeing pools. anyway, i could not afford to go to law school so i thought, i can get into graduat
